I like Schwartz as a person, but she approaches cases the same way she’s approaching those videos. It’s as though she sees the justice system as a joke. Villani put in against her and that’s been the extent of his campaign efforts. It’s truly unfortunate that we’re going to have to put up with another six years of Schwartz’s laissez-faire attitude just because VIllani couldn’t be bothered to expend any effort running against her.

It’s a gift to her, really. She gets to have the benefits of both running unopposed and amassing campaign funds she could use again in six years. Pretty sweet situation.

Judge Schwartz’s “when a lawyer says . . . ” video was so tone deaf that it makes me question whether she is suited for the bench. I mean, we’re in court doing a job: representing our clients. Effectively representing a client means that sometimes–gasp.shock.horror.–we have to object and we have to make a record in the event the case ends up on appeal. Schwartz’s apparent lack of appreciation for the role that attorneys play in her courtroom is disappointing and reflects a fundamental lack of the type of neutrality and evenhandedness that a judge is supposed to exhibit. But you know, that’s just like my opinion, man.

Because of that video, I’m going to hold my nose and vote for Villani.

The pink wave in 2020 gave us some doozies. Schwartz. Ballou. Jasmine Lilly Spells. They gotta go.

I actually like the videos Lilly Spells has been putting out – it seems she’s trying to explain things in plain language while being professional.

I actually have donated to JLS’s opponent this week after getting two just mind-numbingly ridiculous rulings from her in recent weeks. I wanted to file the Notices of Appeal upon walking out of the courtroom that her decisions were that bad. I at times have appreciated her demeanor and when she has gotten stuff right but realized that coin flips can get it right at least 49.7% of the time and she is no better than a coinflip in civil cases.

I have no idea if her rulings were correct but the fact that people donate to challengers when the judge rules in a way that doesn’t personally benefit them is one reason that judicial elections are such a bad idea. A judge should be able to rule without worrying about how the decision will affect their campaign funding.

Exactly, we should have judges who don’t care about being terrible at their jobs with no way to hold them accountable for their poor performance. We should just wait for the Supreme Court to remove them from the bench, Ballou-style. In fact, why hold our judges to any standards at all? Just put someone with daddy’s last name on the bench as soon as they graduate law school and let them skate by forever on their winning smiles and baseless rulings.

This is an absolutely ridiculous take. Not 12:13 but Spells’s rulings often make you wonder if she ever took a civil litigation class in law school because she clearly has no concept of how contracts and property law work. It is not about personal benefit; it is about professional competence.

From a criminal defense attorney, I support both Schwartz and Lilly-Spells fully!

So then, as someone who doesn’t support criminals, I suppose I shall support their opponents. Remember when people used to be afraid of the consequences for breaking the law? We’re not talking about muni court here, these are big-boy felonies in district court. Whatever happened to the Judge Mosleys of the world?

Lombardo gave us three great criminal judges to counter the 2020 PD wave. Sadly, Goodey took one out.
