In the year of our Lord 2026, there is no reason why M.Ds and D.Os should be governed by totally separate boards. Throw a couple of osteopaths on the BME and eliminate the duplication. 50 years ago the DO was more like a glorified DC. This is no longer the case. No reason for two boards.

Brightline was advertising to hire counsel in Las Vegas awhile back. I looked at the ad and thought, this seems risky. Who did they hire, and how long did that person hold the job?
If it is the correct entity, Brightline West, they hired a person who is not a full member of the bar. They have a “C” “in house” number. So unfair they allow foreign licensed attorneys to be in house with corporations and businesses. They need to do away with all these exceptions to the bar. Not necessary. Plenty of lawyers here. Take the damn exam and become fully licensed.
If you want to set foot in court, I agree. If you want to take on multiple clients, I agree. However if you are exclusively an executive for an entity, I do not agree because VP of Legal Affairs or EVP of Licensing can be handled by lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
Often this is a position that essentially hires local counsel and acts as liaison with management/check writer. I don’t think you need licensure everywhere your company does business if that is the case.
There is a problem if you are incorporated in the home state or the management is headquartered in a state. Nevada has such a blanket exemption. I have yet to meet anyone in California who is in house and not a full member of the California bar.

Does the California bar allow the exception for in-house counsel? Do most states?
