I wonder if some of those West Virginia justices are available to consult on new courthouse interior decorating?

@10:46 – yes, Clark County is buying the City out of its lease, which is where some of the money for the new courthouse will come from. Crazy to think that the RJC is less than 15 years old and it has already become too small, several times over now.

Clark County's population has grown by about 60 percent since the courthouse was opened. Even assuming it was adequately sized when it was first designed, that doesn't mean they factored in population growth.

Clark County's population has increased around 25% since the RJC opened in 2005. They did not factor in population growth. They put some of the highest use floors (District Court) at the top of a building rather than at the bottom of a building for easiest accessibility (out of ego). To pay 23 million dollars to cancel a lease with an existing value of $4MM– well that is county management for you.

It's not just to cancel a lease. The City has an ownership interest in the building that is being bought out. I'm told it is cheaper to buy the City than let the county judges design a new (justice courts?) building. Good luck to the City on their design, although Molasky may be a pretty good construction manager.

I wonder if it will do anything to help alleviate the elevator lines at RJC in the morning.

Doubtful. I've heard many times that the building has half of the elevators a building of that size should have. No idea if that's true or not, but it sure seems like it when you're in line for an elevator.

I worked as a law clerk when the building was under construction (and behind several years). There was a second bank of six elevators on the main floor and a parking structure adjacent (the judge's lot) which was a multi-story with a sky walk so the robes did not have to mingle with the unwashed masses. Those cuts were made due to cost overruns. There was also some rather significant drama related to the Nevada sandstone with the quotes engraved in it. It was quite expensive but the committee wanted the building to look judicial as I recall. The lights that reflect up the sides of the building are German and have to be replaced from the company in Germany (again, as I recall). So, when a pigeon implodes due to the heat and blasts through one of those lights, I runs in the thousands of dollars.

Will I not have to ride the elevator with stinky criminal defendants anymore? Seriously, how do so many of those people stink so badly so early in the morning?

And those lights that are supposed to light up the steps? Per the County, the conduit is shot to heck (crushed) and needs to be replaced, hence no lights on the steps. Not an issue for those who work there during daylight hours only, but in the fall and winter, those steps are mighty dark!

I know many of you never had the chance to cross paths with Mark Hinueber at the RJ. Decent human being even when the RJ has been not a decent publication. He posted on Facebook in the last week that he has 3 weeks to live and published his goodbye. If you get a chance to read it, you should.

Thanks for the information. I worked with Mark on a few issues and thought highly of him. His goodbye letter was thoughtful and moving.
