Just Another Day In Paradise, Nevada

  • Law
  • LV Metro Sheriff Doug Gillespie opted to, contrary to the recommendation of the Use of Force Board, not fire an officer who shot someone after mistaking the shiny sticker on a hat for a gun. Glad to know that the bureaucracy is working like it is supposed to. [RJ]
  • Las Vegas homebuilder Paul Wagner, who was found guilty of charges related to over $18 million in mortgage fraud last fall was sentenced to 14 years in prison. The AUSAs wanted 17 and 1/2 years, but Wagner’s defense attorney Mitchell Posin put on Wagner’s wife and other witnesses to secure a lower sentence. [RJ]
  • The I-Team took a look at publicly available county and city salaries. Nice work if you can get it. [8NewsNow, Salary Tracker]
  • For all the ambulance chasers out there, this probably isn’t anything new, but the Las Vegas Sun has a list of the 10 most accident-prone intersections in the valley. [Las Vegas Sun]
  • Here’s another heart-warming tale about an HOA seeking to fine someone…for not planting enough trees…and only recognizing the fact after he lived there for 11 years. [KTNV]

I hate HOAs. Must have been invented by lawyers.

Oh come on, the concept is good, but — like anything — can sometimes be poorly implemented. You just never hear about the 70-90% of HOAs that are doing the right thing.

HOAs are for people who want a nice-looking neighborhood, but who can't be bothered to talk to their damn neighbors.

Did you see the last year of pay/retirement payout for Chris Owens? $522,289.90.

God bless the union.

I do not live in an HOA, but I've had a few litigation matters involving HOA's. In my experience, the board members are self-parodies, comical fascists who are socially inept. They are really fun to depose. Anyone who could actually do a good job on an HOA is too busy… with a real life.

That salary tracker doesn't seem to show what the District Court judges make.

@2:11 As someone who's gotten into it with my HOA I couldn't agree more.

I would also add that you could substitute "Neighborhood Watch Patrol" for the acronym "HOA" in your last sentence and be equally on point.

@3:00,

Go to http://transparentnevada.com and search under the title of JUDICIAL ELECTED OFFICIALS. Looks like the annual salary started at $159,135.30 for the newest judges, and tops out at $206,279.00 for the Supremes.

Does it tell you how much the retired judges on a pension are picking up in pro tem fees?

HOA's are like guns. Remember, HOA's don;t drive people crazy, HOA yard fascists drive people crazy.
