According to court minutes, Constable John Bonaventura and his attorney Robert Pool left a settlement conference without permission at the federal courthouse yesterday. Bonaventura and Pool dispute that is what happened and intend to file a motion to correct the minutes. [RJ]
A decision will be handed down on OJ Simpson’s request for a new trial within the next few weeks. Tomorrow kicks off the annual state bar convention at Lake Tahoe. Is anyone going? Is it worthwhile to attend? Is there a reason they don’t hold them in Vegas? Do you have a better idea?
Because none of the lawyers from other areas of the state (gasp! yes, we do exist) want to go to Vegas. Plus, it gives you all an excuse to take a tax deductible vacation.

I don't care where you are from, given a choice between traveling and spending a few days in Las Vegas or in Tahoe during July, Tahoe wins hands down.
P.S. I live in Las Vegas and love it, but I can definitely see the attraction of Tahoe in July.

LOL. 8:23, I love the little man complex up north. Most people in Las Vegas don't even think about other parts of the state. I've never even been to Reno and I've lived in Nevada for years.

The reason many Nevada attorneys think events should be held in Las Vegas is that over 2/3 of the state lives in the Las Vegas Valley.
I love Reno and Tahoe, I've lived in Reno in the past, and I hope to practice law up there one day, but it makes sense to hold events in the part of the state where the majority of your members live and work.

In the mid-nineties, the Supreme Court issued an order to the Bar requiring that the bar convention be held in state and then it was out of state every other year. It was in the same set of reforms that imposed term limits on Board of Governors members. The only places with enough hotel rooms are Vegas, Reno and Laughlin. We held it one year in Laughlin in August. Predictably, attendance was way down.

I think probably up to 300 lawyers attend and bring family. Some people go because it can be written off. Some people go because they can hang out with judges. Some people go to attend the CLE. Others actually like to hang out with other lawyers.

Looking at numbers from bar website, it appears attendance varies between 125 to less than 200each year. Even being very generous and using the number of 200 per year, that comes out to less than 2 1/2% of active members. Of active members who are in-state as opposed to out of state, it comes out to about 3 1/4% of members. Seems rather pathetic to have a bar convention (and use bar dues to pay for at least some of the costs)when turnout is so low.
