Nevada Rules of Professional Conduct Rule 1.1 says, “ Rule 1.1. Competence. A lawyer shall provide competent representation to a client. Competent representation requires the legal knowledge, skill, thoroughness and preparation reasonably necessary for the representation..” Today we ask what do you to ensure you’re competent when taking on a new case in a different area of law. How do you decide when you need to associate with someone or whether you can learn as you go because it is similar enough to other areas? Do you stay in your lane? Or are you adventurous and trying new areas as opportunities present themselves? What about changing practice areas entirely? How you ensure you’re complying with this rule?
