The I-Team at 8NewsNow has a piece up about the coming legal marijuana dispensaries in Nevada. The legislature cleared the way earlier this year to make possible what voters okayed nearly a decade ago and the first dispensary is expected to open next April.
We want to know what you think about medical marijuana and not-so-medical marijuana in Nevada. How will this affect business for criminal defense attorneys? How will this affect their character and fitness reviews? Will medical marijuana lead to full on legalization? Will this lower my taxes? What does this do for “enthusiasts” who like to grow their own?
Interesting to see how this affects people's lives and how it pans out! Certainly could create many more ambiguities in the system – not what you want!
In my opinion, marijuana is easily the second most commonly abused substance among attorneys in Vegas. While medically licensed use will be good for those who legitimately need it, I fear we'll see a lot of abuse of its availability–especially among lawyers.
Haven't smoked in 30 years, I am looking forward to the feds legalizing because until they do, I still could get busted.
However, having sat through the death of my sister and seeing what a difference mj made in her last months, it must be made available for patients. To start, the feds just need to reclassify it so that it isn't classified with heroin and can be prescribed. Next step, full legalization.
Not many legitimate medical physicians believe marijuana has much real medical benefit. Physicians who do prescribe marijuana are mostly on the outer fringe. And by and large, those who publicly extol its supposed medical benefits are not legitimate physicians, but rather potheads who want greater access to their drug of choice. There is a lot of hypocrisy surrounding this issue.
Who wants to represent Coolio for free?

11:33 am is probably right that many people behind medical marijuana are just pot heads, but who cares? I don't smoke pot because I think it's a waste of time and money, but if someone else wants to do it on their time, then so be it. There are a lot worse things than pot that are legal.
@ 9:04, do you mean "abuse" as in recreational use or in as in "wake and bake" and keep going throughout the day? I think a lot of lawyers use it, but not abuse it.
I'm also sad to see that folks can't grow their own anymore–at least from what I can tell.
I'd guess within five years it will be legal for recreational use.
I smoked a lot in college but that was over 20 years ago. I'm surprised in such a libertarian state as Nevada, this is still such a prominent issue.
Personally, I think it is less dangerous than alcohol, and (slightly) less dangerous than tobacco (if used as heavily and "long term" as a typical tobacco user).
The stigma of having a small amount of marijuana is simply gone compared to 20 years ago; the law simply needs some more catching up to do to reflect that reality. In a few states, it already has – maybe Nevada is soon to follow ?
