On The Record

  • Law

Court reporters are (at least for the moment) still an integral part of most of our legal practices. They are, perhaps, some of the most professional individuals involved in our profession. Most of the time they sit quietly at the end of the table tapping away as they listen, silently judging you and yet rarely commenting or laughing at your mistakes.

Most of you probably have your go-to reporting service that you call whenever you have the option. We want to know who you use and why? Do they always goes the extra mile? Maybe the turnaround time is what they promise or they’re just pleasant to deal with. Or, for the construction defect gang, is it because they have better cookies? Anyone have any funny court reporter stories?

I always love to ask court reporters about their best deposition stories. Almost every seasoned court reporter has sat through a deposition that has gone off the rails. It's also a good way to get some entertainment out of what is usually a long and boring process.

For the most part, they're fungible. And prices do not vary considerably. Therefore, as long as she's minimally competent, the one with the best figure and tightest clothing gets my business.

They are not interchangeable. Get a good one, or one who is friendly to you, and you will find that all of your verbal tics (uh, um) will disappear and maybe those of your opposing counsel will be retained.

Better ones show up on time, can handle long depo stretches, multiple talking etc.

I agree with 9:47. Look good, show some cleavage, wear a short skirt. You'll be back in my office frequently.

Wow, it is incredibly sad for anyone to die at home alone and for nobody to notice for so long.

I try to use one reporter only. 11:05 is right, they will make you look better on paper. Plus I get charged extra for various ecopies.

I agree. This is so sad. Drugs are such a scourge and have destroyed so many promising lives.

My prayers and heart go out to Schubert's two children.
