Years ago Rod Stewart kicked a soccer ball into the audience and hit a local woman in the face. An attorney sued him hoping he would show up for his deposition. I think the case settled before that.

In the 1980’s during the MGM fire cases, a local attorney subpoenaed Cary Grant because he was on the board of the MGM and she wanted to meet the movie star. He actually showed up but then yelled at one of the attorneys for smoking during the deposition. It would never happen today. No one would be allowed to smoke during a deposition.

The attorney was Faye Ferguson, representing the MGM entities, of Los Angeles’ Wyman Bautzer Rothman Kuchel & Silbert. Cary didn’t really yell at Faye, he chided her. He said, Faye, why are you smoking? Faye said, I’ve never had a good man tell me not to. Cary responded, well, you have now. Faye promptly extinguished her cigarette. Her dad was Ninth Circuit judge Warren Ferguson. The depo was held at the Wyman offices in Century City. Wyman never put out water, let alone any other beverage, during depos. For the Grant depo, there was an enormous display of pastries and donuts on a silver platter. Cary was polite and respectful throughout.

Let me tell you a story about Wyman Bautzer Rothman Kuchel & Silbert during the MGM fire litigation. A local defense attorney (Sal) picked up one of their Los Angeles attorneys at McCarran Airport for a deposition. The LA attorney insisted that he ride in the back seat while Sal drove, as if Sal were his chauffeur. Needless to say Sal never forgot the experience.

“Vegas isn’t fun anymore if you’re on a budget”
You think? It’s been super expensive for years and although the Convention authority thinks the downturn in business is only temporary, I doubt it.

As someone who lives here, I cannot fathom how someone would use their vacation time and money to visit Las Vegas.

I mean… the casinos would strongly prefer that the people “on a budget” stay home. That’s not the market they are targeting, and hasn’t been for a couple of decades now. People who respond to loss leaders like buffets can just stay away and make more room for the trust fund douchenozzles and retired moneybags of the world.

But apparently the numbers of “trust fund douchenozzles and retired moneybags of the world” have dropped off.

Until around 2016, Vegas had offerings for the people on a budget seeking loss leaders and the trust fund babies/rich Boomers. About that time, the powers that be decided to abandon the former entirely and go after the latter exclusively. That was the mistake.

True. O’Sheas, Imperial Palace, et al. There was always the high end places, but there were places for the “poor” people who only made $100k a year. Those places don’t really exist anytime.

Welp, I’m off to Sunset Station!

After 401k and IRA, where do you invest extra cash for retirement?

If you are a DIY investor, then probably establish a Roth IRA and put what you can into an S&P 500 index fund, or a few individual blue-chip stocks that pay a decent dividend, and then let the dividends reinvest. Or a combination of the two. If you have a long time horizon, it will start to add up. Stay away from fads like crypto, biotech stocks that sell for a buck per share, or anything like that.

Yes, please stay away from crypto.
Because those of us that do not have made more money on this fad in the last year than in the last 5 practicing law.

Which I do for fun now.

Also, I made $3,900 before lunch this morning. So keep walking. Nothing to see here.

Yes way. If you put $276 into bitcoin on this day 10 years ago, it would be worth $118,602 today.

I max out my Roth 401k, max-out my “back-door” Roth IRA, and max out my HSA. Beyond that, there’s not much else I can do that has tax advantages. After all the tax advantaged vehicles are maxed, I then continue to build in a regular brokerage account. At least 75% of that money goes into a simple S&P 500 index fund. It has no load and a ridiculously low management fee.

Pretty much do the same, and have an intermediate step with a HYSA with Amex. Once that gets big enough then I move a chunk over to the brokerage account.

Buy VOO and forget your password until the next time you buy VOO. Buy SPLG if you need cheaper entry and can’t buy fractional through your brokerage.

Max out 401(k), Max out Roth, put the rest in a fidelity brokerage made up of index funds. Most attorneys, including myself, don’t have the time or skill to make stock picks that beat the index fund. I love VOO, FXAIX, QQQ, etc.

Back-door Roth is easy enough and has the exact same tax advantages. Or haven’t you heard of that?

It certainly seems like a genuine public safety issue. Not just for Doe, but for everyone who visits Vegas. These microphone hurlers have been running roughshod on peaceful assembly for far too long. That’s all this is about. Public safety. And also taking on the ultra-powerful pop music cabal. Enough is enough.

Seems like she served jail time for criminal contempt for failing to show up for the start of a jury trial.

Craig Mueller did the same thing but was just given a Public Reprimand and no jail time. Judge Newberry went easy on him. For some reason the Reprimand does not show up on the Bar website.

Very shocking and sad news. Jennifer was an incredibly kind and generous person, as well as a fantastic attorney. I enjoyed every interaction I had with her–both personally and professionally. She will be missed.
