- Comment from the editor:
The whole Prince/Houston situation is very difficult and hits very close to home for a lot of us, which understandably gets the emotions going.
That being the case, in addition to the extremely unpredictable and violent aspects of this situation, I am respectfully urging everyone, regardless of which side of the fence you happen to be on, to keep you comments respectful, i.e. not blaming the victims, and not blaming/attacking people who may be caught in the middle, or even on the fringe of this extremely unfortunate and sad situation.
I appreciate that many people might have an opinion on who they believe may have some or all of the fault for this situation, but we simply cannot let this blawg turn into an anonymous lynch mob.
There is a legal process which can, and will play out eventually, where everyone involved will have the opportunity to be heard and judged in publicly.
This is not the place to have that process play out.
That being said, and in an effort to keep the temperature down, I’m going to be Thwacking comments on all sides if I feel that they are not in line with this approach.
My apologies if you don’t like that, but we cannot have this blawg be the catalyst for more threats or violence.
NDOC is a mess! When will it change?
When the AG’s office, governor’s office, and legislature stops enabling them and actually does something to hold them accountable.
Is Dennis Prince’s funeral going to be broadcast on Zoom? I didn’t know him, but I would like to watch.
Check Palm’s website, sometimes funeral homes livestream services on their page or youtube if the family wants them to. Don’t know if palms does or will be for this funeral.
Hearing through the grapevine that DP’s mother and adult children from his first marriage have retained Eglet.
OH! the irony.
They’ll end up owning that entire office park. Watch.
That’s who I’d hire. Eglet does his best work when the spotlight is bright.
So Tracy and Bob will be at the funeral?
Its the event of the year. A true opportunity to be seen.
Okay, maybe I’m missing something, but how could the office park have prevented this from happening? Are you suggesting that Eglet will argue that metal detectors were needed? That security pat down and inspect all people coming and going? Should security have been in the conference room the depo was in? This wasn’t a preventable incident.
But the vials of Propofal were too big and THAT caused the hepititis. Wake up dude.
“Retained” or “restrained”?
Zero chance that happens. ZERO. Did you read the adult kids’ statement? “We were extremely disappointed by some of the comments made by our fathers’ previous colleagues embellishing the nature of their relationship.”
Are you referring to his Mom and older children hiring Eglet?
Bet your ass, they have already.
Has Kelly Houston returned to Judge Teuton’s office?
Very interesting that we hear about Dennis’s funeral but we do not hear a peep about Joe’s funeral. I presume that they are allowing the dust to settle. However Joe did have friends in this town and in our profession.
I imagine his family is keeping it small and private if they have a service at all.
This is hard for the innocents in his family because they are so limited in the way that they can grieve. I feel sorry for them.
Having to mourn the loss of a father, mourn what he did, hide from the heinous crime they had no party to, witness their spouse not only kill others but then himself, deal with a siblings action, lose the ability to see children they love … it’s a lot to carry
It would be a lot more interesting if you had heard about it already, I think
Although the violence was inexcusable and horrific, I must be truthful that Joe was always professional with me and we amicably resolved several cases. I’m sorry for all concerned.
His memorial was on Sunday.
Thwackage is at historic levels.
Probably a good thing. I am usually in favor of letting it ride, but with this discussion, I get it.
I honestly think the thwackage has been pretty measured. And historic level are rightfully seen in the political threads. I would commend the Admins for allowing discussion.
The thwackometer is maxing out.
The thwackolator is percolating.
The thwackosaurus is rearing up today.
I got thwacked for what I thought were pretty mundane posts, but I’m not complaining. Thanks for running this blog!
Our Bar Engages in More PC BS
Just saw the April 2024 SBN Meeting Digest. See the “Strategic Planning” notes.
Looks like DEI did not DIE. More resources wasted on politically correct BS.
Nothing mentioned about advocating for lawyers in the public space or with the legislature.
Quit your whining
D.I.E. is institutional racism and elitism and every company that employs DIE needs to be sued into oblivion. Where are all the employee PI firms on this madness?
Are you goofing the acronym on purpose?
A seventh juror was impaneled by Justice Juan Merchan at the end of the day. The juror, who is an attorney and lives on the Upper East Side, was sworn in after 5:30 p.m. The man is a civil litigator and assured the parties his background in law would not affect his ability to weigh the case.
I assure you it will.
Of course it will. How could it not?
Agree. NYC, Manhattan borough. The people that voted in Alvin Bragg.
Are you under the impression that jurors usually come from a different county than the one that voted in the prosecuting DA?
I keep getting emails to vote for people running on Board of Governors and see the same old promises made about what they will do, which got me thinking: what would y’all want to see from a candidate, or what promise would actually make you vote for someone? I think the only thing that really needs to be done is the OBC needs to get its act together and actually provide oversight, but that doesn’t win elections.
The Bar needs to become politically neutral on hot button issues like DEI. Stop the exclusivity of the out of state conventions. Find ways to trim the budget to reduce our annual fee, which is among the highest in the country.
You need to stop complaining about DEI.
the out of state convention thing is insane! I agree.
This is the least of their failures. Significant nonetheless, but in the grand scheme, a small drop in the proverbial bucket.
At the funeral for Dennis. By 4 it was packed. Services start at 5.
Standing room only then they had to
Open an overflow room
Was it a memorial for both Dennis and Ashley? Or just Dennis?
Just Dennis but her parents were there and I saw her sister. Of course she was mentioned and praised. The saddest moment was when Scot the son of Dennis told about visiting their infant baby girl right after the tragedy and realizing she would not grow up with her parents who adored her.
Unimaginable.
It was videotaped.
Anyone see Eglet?
I did not see him. Plenty of old Eglet Prince’s associates there. AG Ford was standing up. Supreme Court Justice Patricia Lee was there as was Nancy Allf. Shelley Berkley and our former governor were there.
I saw Richard Harris.
Eglet was to busy talking with the media acting like he was DP’s best friend since he always has to make things about himself.
I did not see Bob Adams either.
One hot button issue in the corridors outside the funeral service is what will happen to the Prince Law Group without a top notch trial attorney on the payroll. Some thought it would merge with Eglet or another star litigator.
Small issue but I would suspect that it will be very similar to any other case where an attorney passes or is suspended. There will be a transition period in which clients will be given the choice to stay at PLG or to move their case to another firm. I will not comment on the strength of the horses at PLG as to what I would anticipate would happen.
Imagine going to any funeral, but this one in particular, and thinking this is a “hot button issue.” Talk about missing the point. You have to wonder if anyone who spent anytime thinking about this particular “hot button issue” at the funeral is ever capable of understanding what’s actually important in life. Sad.
Anyone read Lisa Rasmussen’s interview with Channel 8? https://www.8newsnow.com/investigators/las-vegas-law-office-shooting-survivor-recounts-heated-meeting-he-was-pointing-a-gun/
That was tough to read. Personally never like Lisa and thought she was a little overrated for as much press as she got/sought. But no one should be forced into this situation and she was. My sympathies go out to her and the other witnesses and more so to the children who lost one or both parents.
She’s given more than one interview. I’m sure it was absolutely horrific thing to witness. However, with that comment she made on Channel 8 that Joe Houston asked about resolving the issues and Dennis ignored her that she was making it somehow Dennis’s fault. She does represent Houston’s wife after all. On the Channel 13 interview, she showed the reporter a message from Joe Houston asking that Ashley not attend the depo that day. It just seemed she wanted to make him somehow sympathetic. It left a bad taste in my mouth.
I concur with 11:07 with one small caveat: her client is Katherine Kelly Houston. She speaks (or should speak) with a client in mind. I would have declined the interview I believe unless Kelly told her to try to soften the opprobrium against Joe. There is no question that the picture she paints is one of Dennis effectively goading Joe and wanting to proverbially push him around. Its a thin line.
Knock this off. You are hearing rumor and innuendo. And clearly didn’t like DP. I didn’t like Houston one bit, but you don’t see me maligning him anonymously on a blawg.
