Brittany Walker, a Boyd ’17 grad, is the new acting City Attorney for Boulder City–meeting the 3 years of practice requirement by a mere 11 days. [BCR]
How sad are the Boyd 2013s right now? Remember just a few years ago when they were running circles around hapless Cal. Western and McGeorge grads? The future was theirs. Now that Boyd 2017s have come to the table, though, the 2013s' collective stars have fallen.
3:02–what would the reason for that be? Is the school not sufficiently demanding? Do thy coddle their students? Is the student body largely composed on entitled, spoiled students who are the spawn of successful local attorneys and politicians?
I pose these questions because your remarks are not the first time I've heard someone describe Boyd graduates as lazy, entitled and lacking a sufficient work ethic.
And it is common for the children of local attorneys to attend Boyd.
My first hired associate was a Boyd grad (@2004 or so as I recall) we worked hard together for a couple years and he moved on but we remained friends. 2020 and he remains one of my closest friends.
Of course, he is he exception and NOT the rule.

You have to give her props for turning down the higher salary offer and just taking the base salary of $170K. I've been working for nearly 15 years and my base salary is still short of that. I must have chose the wrong type of work.

Is tenacity any more of a job requirement to be City Attorney for Boulder City than, I don't know, being tall?
@11:44, Reid's son was City Attorney in Henderson. He was a partner at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck before joining Henderson, and I believe that he's a partner at Snell & Wilmer now. He was juiced in, but he had been a lawyer for over a decade. The only qualification that you need to be a City Attorney is the ability to get a majority vote of the City Council.
@12:17 – it was Josh
@12:12 – He's at Lewis & Roca, not Snell
@10:40 – There obviously wasn't a height requirement in Henderson, Josh is shorter than Frodo.
I wounder if Josh was the most qualified for the Henderson attorney job? I wounder if his awful, evil father got him the job?

If it were any other city than Boulder City, I would say this is inconceivable. This cannot be a reasonable choice. I am assuming everything in favor of Mrs. Walker, that she is "tenacious", and has an intelligent mind. I think tenacity is good in any job, but not necessarily the best criteria for a city attorney (more so than height).
A city attorney has the burdens of acting as "in house counsel" for the city, which requires attention to detail, big picture thinking and the ability to fairly evaluate facts, law, politics and budget. As lead prosecutor they also have the responsibility not just to prosecute crimes, but to fairly evaluate charges and weigh whether charges should be brought in the first place. (This skill is sorely lacking in generally all prosecutors, which is a systematic defect of the system).
She did clerk for the Court of Appeals for a year, which i think is good experience with a wide variety of cases. She may have had some exposure to criminal cases there. But she has effectively been working for 2 years, at a big firm, where she is likely doing research and writing. No active decision making is likely to be expected. Looking at the Court records, she has made an appearance in one (1) case in her entire career (Case No. A-19-798928-C, ACRX Specialty Pharmacy Inc, Plaintiff(s) vs. Nevada State Board of Pharmacy, Defendant(s). By way of comparison, as an average civil litigator with a variety of small and large cases, my appearance list exceeded 200 (the most that will show up in any search) in just a few years. She likely has no experience in screening cases. She has no experience in managing staff or attorneys. She doesn’t appear to have any experience in administrative law. How is she going to be aware of the open meeting law requirements, or managing headstrong city council members, or navigating any of the many pitfalls? Her part time experience with RTC may give some exposure but not enough. Look, were she an assistant / Deputy City Attorney for a few years after her H&H experience, I think she may be a potential good candidate for the job.
It appears she graduated from UNLV in 2011 and then took three years before going to law school at Boyd. The only experience on her resume is “Policy Assistant” with the State Assembly for 6 months in 2013. So clearly she has some political connections (which is probably good, although I think its value is more in getting the job and keeping it than actual value in performing the job). It is likely that the mayor thinks Mrs. Walker will be under his thumb.
This sort of nonsense is why I haven’t moved to Boulder City. I love some of the neighborhoods, and think the schools would make it a decent place to raise kids. But I don’t know how this sort of thing can even fly. It sounds like the premise to a bad sitcom more than an actual good idea.
And the fact that mayor thinks he can "set aside any drama" by saying people ask people for recommendations of people to hire all the time. Not a particularly good look after all that has gone down in the BC the last few years.
I am having a horrendous month at work and I am actually livid that this lawyer got this job. Not because I think she'll necessarily do a bad job, but because I am over the top jealous that my life outcome is so comparatively bad even though I've worked longer at bigger named firms. Like, I am arguing with some shitty LA lawyer because he thinks it's totally fine to issue 200+ requests for admissions, and 100+ interrogatories, in a stupid little case that doesn't warrant 10 interrogatories. Fucking boo. I will get back to discovery fights.

Has anyone be reading the Indy race analysis on the judicial campaigns ? Absolutely brutal to Scotti and Krall. This is the best source of info we have ever had
I have to disagree. I think Scotti is clearly the better choice. Is he perfect, no. Indeed I think his interaction with the juror was not acceptable. (Understandable, absolutely, as jurors brazen attempts to get off the duty interferes with the process. But he is a Judge).
But the critiques are not even handed. In the criminal case, it appears that both defender and prosecutor over looked this.
My experience with Scotti is that he is a diligent and hard working judge. He has come prepared to hear the issues and tries really hard to get it right. Indeed, one time at a settlement conference he dug so into the details that I think it didn't let us get to the non-merit based portion as much. But for a complicated hearing I would much prefer Scotti over several other Departments.
Same here. I haven't yet chimed in on any of the Scotti threads, but I've had good experiences in his department. The juror/demeanor issue is real, and he should hold himself to a higher standard on the bench.
That being said, I generally find Scotti to be prepared and a critical thinker, especially compared to some of his cohorts. He's the better choice in this race by a solid margin.
3:23 PM here. Incumbent comments aside, isn't the Department II challenger a 10 year attorney with no civil experience? She may be a great addition to the bench down the line, but seems to have too few years and too narrow of a practice for the docket she's seeking.

184k for a third year lawyer in Boulder City has got to be some kind of record. I am confident that she is not the first unqualified person to hold an elected position in Nevada's long history, and that her incompetence probably won't impact me because I never make it to Boulder City.
It's an appointed job, not an elected job. This means that the city council decides who's in the position. Also, it's not just $184K, the city has to pay 30% of the salary ($55K) towards PERS, which allows the employee to retire with 75% of their salary for the rest of their lives. I have 18 years in PERS, and I bought 5 years credit. In 2027 I will be able to retire at 51 with and make 75% of my highest salary. The best advice ever given to me was to get a job in the PERS system right out of law school. Enjoy those billable hours!
Doh! I knew it wasn't elected. But I am confident that she is not the first unqualified person to hold an APPOINTED position in Nevada's history. What jobs get PERS because…fuck everything about my job right now.
1:13, the PERS system includes all of Nevada's judges, state legislators, state, county and city elected officials and school administrators and employees. The powers that be in Nevada will let the Taliban run our school system before they screw with their own PERS pensions. Read any Nevada Supreme Court decision about PERS benefits and you will know what I mean.
I am enjoying this thread. I am so over these PERS pos acting like their shit dont donkey that the taxpayers are paying them 100k a year to retire when they have no bread to feed their kids? Retire at 40. Yes, please vote for Bonnie Bullard for Court of Appeals and Ozzie Fumo so the broke, corrupt retirement system is saved for them.
Nevada is ILLINOIS in 15 years as far as the pension funds go..

Different topic: Let's say that demons rise from Hell and enough weak-minded wannabe Marxists are hypnotized by ole' country boy sleepy joe to vote him in – then get ready for 4 years of impeachment payback i.e., every investigation known to mankind on the Hunter laptop. Just one more reason to keep America going in the correct direction with President Trump and not with Marxists. I remember reading the Communist Manifesto in Poly Sci 101 and I remember thinking, "Wow, if I had a lobotomy, then fell and hit my head, then got smashed on some Anisette this might take root in my mind." But to the AOC squad (aka Joe's caregivers) it all makes perfect sense.
Come on man! What are you smokin? I am not going to kill petroleum jobs, huh huh well I mean I will kill fracking and petroleum jobs. Uh..what were we talking about? hmm… Come on man!
You're scared of Joe Biden? Biden has been in government since long before I was born. If he was going to unleash something terrible, it seems like it would have happened long ago. I worry that Biden will die in office and we'll have President Kamala Harris. Say what you will about Hillary Clinton, she was at least qualified to be President. Harris hasn't shown she's even remotely qualified. All she does is stir up shit, back terrible partisan policies, and make faces every time someone points out how terrible she is.
Maybe after Biden is removed by Pelosi's 25th amendment committee, then President Harris can fix the international relations with China and Russia doing with Putin and Jinping what she did with Willie Brown?
I don't know if I could live in a country that voted Trump out of office. Time to leave. Wait, if the USA goes left there is nowhere to go. Shit.

Watch The Plot Against The President on Amazon prime before voting. Unbelievable.
A 2017 Boyd grad is a city attorney? Is this a fucking joke? Sounds like the federal bench.
What do you mean?
@10:50 – said by clueless Boyd'ee
@10:05 The answer is a old Las Vegas custom. Qualifications don't matter so long as you are politically connected.
Who the hell is Brittany Walker? A Harry Reid wannabe?
Ditto – who the hell is Brittany Walker and how did she get that job? I want it.

Sweet huggable muggable, look at who teaches at Boyd? Friggin frigid scary as hell
I would never hire a Boyd attorney. Been there and regretted it. The associate was from the class of 2014 and she was horrible. No work ethic.
3:02–what would the reason for that be? Is the school not sufficiently demanding? Do thy coddle their students? Is the student body largely composed on entitled, spoiled students who are the spawn of successful local attorneys and politicians?

What was the Boyd grad ranked? I think the top Boyd grads are generally smart and work hard, and the bottom ones generally aren't and don't.
Serious question: To whom is Brittany Walker related? The Woodburys would be my initial guess.
My first hired associate was a Boyd grad (@2004 or so as I recall) we worked hard together for a couple years and he moved on but we remained friends. 2020 and he remains one of my closest friends.
