Santa Claus Is Watchin’ You

  • Law

  • A very happy Judge Betsy Gonzalez and 20 jurors were pleased to learn that the CityCenter litigation settled yesterday morning. The exact terms are unclear, but it looks like hundreds of millions of dollars are being shuffled between the parties with Judge Jennifer Togliatti getting some credit for helping get the parties to a settlement. [RJ]
  • Seems like the RJ has had to report on itself a lot lately. The paper is in the headlines today for suing District Attorney Steve Wolfson for hindering the newspaper in its investigation into the DA’s practice of undisclosed witness payments. The RJ is being represented by attorney Maggie McLetchie. [RJ]
  • In case you worried about outgoing Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto finding a job, you can rest easy. She’s being hired by the NSHE Regents. [Fox5Vegas]
  • Looks like the NSHE may need her sooner than later in the wake of the plagiarism scandal. If you want to hear Chancellor Dan Klaich explain away the situation, there is an interview at KNPR. [RJ]
  • Taxationally challenged Assemblywoman Michelle Fiore, who is also presently set to be majority leader and tax committee chairwoman next year, has an explanation for her tax liens. [RJ]

Fiore is a train wreck. One more example of what's wrong with NV politics…vote for the brain dead blond with the billboards. Who cares if she's actually competent or even marginally ethical!

I like her. She's colorful. She's entertaining. How much damage can she really do? She's a dumber, more outlandish, heavier-set, caricature version of Sara Palin. Good fun. Gun rights, tax protests, and overdone makeup. We need someone like her every few years. Cirque de Soleil should do a show based on her. All just my anonymous opinion, of course. Love the internets.

Let's hear it, Shark Pimp. Tell us what a boon this lady is for Nevada. Come on, you whiny little snot.

December 17, 2014 at 9:43 AM – Sure I'll be happy to. Let's see, I'll choose, oh yeah, gun rights, tax protests and as a long time Uber Fan of Will & Grace, (and the best dressed Constable in America) my third choice is that she's some one who doesn't walk out of the house looking like, well you.

The Majority Leader doesn't need to apologize for protecting 2nd amendment rights or keeping the state from being taxed for increasingly poor public services.

Let me know if you have any serious policy issues to discuss.

We simply cannot tolerate this sexist attack on Assembly Leader Fiore. The IRS has proven that it hates women, and more particularly conservative women. The targeting of Fiore is meant to send a message, "don't you dare be Republican."
Do you think the IRS would target a man, or woman democrat, simply because they failed to monitor his/her business and racked up a seven figure tax bill? No, and it's not her fault, it was her bookkeeper.
Just because the IRS has 45 active tax liens against her does not mean anything. They could of accomplished their goal with just one, using 45 is running up the score. If you read the article you would see that she has clearly indicated that most of those liens, and their appearance on her records, are just an error on the IRS's part. Who do you believe, her or the IRS?
Her bookkeeper has been under investigation for three years, and I am sure he will be indicted any day now. She just can't name him right now because it might interfere with the process. It could also make reunions a pain, since it appears she hires a lot of family.
Some of you may think that her IRS tax debt should disqualify her to be the head of the Tax Committee for the assembly, but she has promised, "I am going to be looking at every one (of the exemptions) with a microscope to figure out who’s not paying.” Honestly, who could be better at finding tax dodgers than someone who dodges taxes? This is a match made in heaven.

Well said @9:11. Just as Roosevelt stated when he appointed Joseph Kennedy to head the SEC, it takes a thief to catch one.

Any word on the appointments to the Intermediate Court? It seems that the Gov would give the lucky three as much time to move as he could.

And THIS is why i voted against the intermediate court.

At least Silver and Tao can stop doing damage in district court (Tao less so, he's just sort of annoying).

Is Gibbons related to the Gibbons on the Supreme Court or former governor? A quick search shows he was in the news for the death of a cyclist.

It's nice watching the Lionel Sawyer implosion from within and everyone's true colors coming out. For example, the executive director accusing support staff of taking advantage of the "can't die quick enough firm" by taking time off. WTF. I know right!

Might as well take your vacation unless you get paid out for it, which I highly doubt at a private law firm.

People who are taking time off are not, I bet, doing it to hang around on the strip…they're probably looking for jobs. I dunno the ED at LSC, but I bet he/she, if they have been there a while, would feel betrayed by everyone not coming together to keep the ship sailing as smoothly as possible before they beach it. Being part of a firm like that isn't like being a person who's been a WalMart for 6 months and finds out it's closing.

The ED probably feels great being a person responsible for the operation of a firm that's now having to close. Probably doesn't make you feel like you did your job as well as you could have. In general, that situation is tough, and very few of the people involved are probably at their best.

"Beaching" isn't the correct term. That implies everyone reaching the same destination, possibly safely, as long as everyone works together to keep the ship afloat. What LSC is doing is more like the captain announcing that the ship is sinking, and that Partners and Senior Associates will be taking all the lifeboats. Support staff is expected to swim, while still manning the pumps to permit as many of the important people to get out as possible. Oh, and don't touch the rum, since the value of the rum will be calculated in the insurance settlement.

I agree with 12:11 PM. Worse yet, the support staff haven't even been told whether they will have a job or not. The attorneys know. The support staff are being kept in the dark

I think the appropriate term is scuttling the ship. Keeping support staff in the dark about whether they will have jobs makes sense because it will give people a sense of hope and encourage them to work through the end. If they know they are unemployed, why really try? If they think that having a job may depend on what they do between now and the end, they are going to work harder. It is a lousy thing to do, but makes complete sense from a managerial perspective.

I don't get the hate for Tao, he's perfect for an appellate position. Always well informed, reads briefs, etc. He'll hammer a client but nothing beyond what they deserve. I'm going to miss the guy.

Silver on the other hand…perfectly understandable. What I don't get is how those two got picked, but Johnson didn't. I mean I get that one had to be from the north, but if you're going to take two sitting judges, why was Johnson left behind?

Nepotism is the Nevada way. The big brother runs the selection apparatus. The commission was surely not influenced by that! This makes the election process seem less replusive. Interesting all three are all former DAs. So much for the civil appeals, probate matters and mechanic's liens. Silver thinks a mechanic is somebody who works at jiffy lube.
