Governor Sandoval announced that the three inaugural judges for the Court of Appeals will be Judge Jerome Tao, Judge Michael Gibbons, and Judge Abbi Silver. All three are sitting judges that were former prosecutors. They’ll take the bench in early January. This means there will be two vacancies on the bench in the Eighth Judicial District. Who do you think will end up there? [RJ]
Based on SEC filings, it looks like Perini came out the net winner in the CityCenter settlement. Congratulations to George Ogilvie and his team at McDonald Carano Wilson. Wonder what kind of bonuses they’ll be getting? [RJ]
The Las Vegas City Council voted to move forward on a soccer stadium that will only be built if the City is awarded a team from Major League Soccer. [8NewsNow]
I'm not an insider but I'll bet dollars to donuts that having the County government involved in the process is at least 50% of what was jacked up with the RJC.
Oh my god, thank you. I thought I was the only one who hated this. I have never seen judge be so personally nasty to pro se litigants without any provocation And, I not saying there aren't very obnoxious pro se people who deserve to be yelled at, but I really think there is no reason to lob personal insults and people who've been nothing but respectful. I think it says a lot of things about your character when you use your position to be abusive to the people in front of you who don't have the same money/power/education/standing that you do, and none of them are good. (Go ahead and yell at the lawyers, I may not like it, but I'm getting paid to take it.)
Hi, I am Abbi Silver and I look forward to probate and mechanic's lien appeals. Of course, the big court had to tell me in a published opinion that it was okay that declarations can be used instead of affidavits. (I never knew!) I hope to be named chief judge of this clown car court. I have never argued in an appellate court or written an appellate brief, but that is why I have Nancy to help me out.
I know I'll pull down a bunch of denials but honestly, doesn't anyone see how personally nasty and demeaning comments like this are about women judges? It's rampant on this site.
Hey, we're equal opportunity offenders. Go back and look at the posts about the judicial elections and you'll see it gets pretty nasty for some of the boy judges too.
As a female, I see nothing wrong with calling out inappropriate conduct by female judges. I don't know much about Silver, but if she behaves that way, she deserves the criticism. Stop crying sexism – it diminishes the credibility of valid complaints of sexism.
At 8:20 — and what is the "inappropriate conduct by female judges" being called out in this thread? that Silver hasn't done a lot of appellate work and been reversed on occasion? Same's true of Tao and a lot of our judges, yet no one's writing, "Hi, I'm Jerry Tao and I look forward to probate appeals." It's that snarkiness that is troubling, not legitimate criticism of a judge, male or female —
Screaming at people in an abusive manner is one of the examples of inappropriate conduct attributed to her to which I was referring. I have seen plenty of snark on this blog directed at male judges too.

"Hi, I am Abbi Silver and I look forward to probate and mechanic's lien appeals." Actually, these are areas with interesting questions of law.
Yes, so interesting that the Supremes are shunting them down to the Shitwork panel. (Yes, our Supreme Court is now divided into three panels – the Northern, the Southern, and the Shitwork.)
At least law clerks get to work on interesting cases. What's more fulfilling: doing work on interesting cases and influencing the outcome or having the final say on uninteresting "shitwork" cases?

"Hi, my name is Abbi Silver and I'm a mean bitch with absolutely no people skills."
If memory serves she was appointed to every seat then ran for retention. The downside of the appointment process is politically connected folks get appointed. The electorate then assumes they are competent and retains them.
Pretty sure that you got fired from MAC b/c you couldn't cut it. its the holidays, everyone shops, But my friends have told me that this is a rumor that has been traced to a long gone employee who likes to bash from his much lower paying job
The attorneys who have left MAC didn't have anything nice to say about it. I guess the Kool-Aid days are gone and it's transitioned into an Alverson Taylor sweatshop. It also appears that its hourly rate has diminished quite a bit.

Perini sure didn't deserve to come out on top. I was onsite for most of the CityCenter construction and they hired a lot of people who shouldn't have been working on the site. It was their people who cut through the pre-stressed concrete in Harmon. Plus these workers ignored the simplest safety precautions. Perini just let it go on.

Oh Mighty Shark Pimp! It seems fearless leader has been removed by those evil republicans, or was it Dems, or was it the IRS! I don't know at this point.
December 18, 2014 at 4:24 PM – That was actually pretty funny! It's true I do have a love of the language and I tend to compose more in the manner of full formal correspondence rather than in the current short social media style preferred by today's young Americans, but as my father once commented at a symposium at the University of Chicago back in the Spring of 1964, Sed ut perspiciatis, unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium, totam rem aperiam eaque ipsa, quae ab illo inventore veritatis et quasi architecto beatae vitae dicta sunt, explicabo. Not a fan of many Republicans but I have respect for the fact that they stood up to the cries of "liberal attacks" and "war on women" rand emoved the racist guy and Fiore from their leadership positions.
Could someone with knowledge of such things explain how you fuck up a building and still get paid for said building?
I also remember the RJC builder fucking up big time and still getting a huge settlement/verdict.
I dunno, but I expect if MLS offers us a team we'll have an additional contractor with some insight on the issue.

Throw some judges and David Roger into the mix and you've probably got another 48%.
It was more Stu less Dave.
Hi, I'm Abbi Silver, I shout at people as cover for my insecurity and lack of legal knowledge.

It truly puzzles me how someone with seemingly no social or legal skill can ladder climb as effectively as she has.
If memory serves she was appointed to every seat then ran for retention. The downside of the appointment process is politically connected folks get appointed. The electorate then assumes they are competent and retains them.
Her father was a pretty well-connected doctor back in the old-school, ring-a-ding-ding, Vegas-baby days.
Is Marquis & Aurbach headed down the same path as LSC? Some established partners are shopping around.
I heard that also. But I just assumed that it's because MAC is a horrible place to be, they just wanted to get out.

Please stop taunting him. I don't want to scroll past a wall of text every time he pimps his panties into a bunch.
