The Boulder City article is funny. People worried about the aesthetics of a data center in the desert 20 miles from BC in a place that’s already used for solar energy facilities and battery production. People will really oppose any effort to have a functional economy in this state.
Data centers and “functional economy” don’t belong in the same sentence. Data Centers don’t produce any sort of significant economic activity. Are these data centers going to be using solar energy? No? Are they going to be slurping up the power production, such that NV Energy may decide between powering more data centers and powering Boulder City (See 49,000 Liberty Utilities subscribers in Lake Tahoe who are getting cut off)?
Not taking a position on the data center, but it’s objectively true that Nevadans are not going to get on board with a functional economy. See also CCSD.
NV Energy has been trying to dump the California side of Tahoe for a decade – data centers have nothing to do with this change.
Data centers don’t produce economic benefit?
I suppose ludites said the same thing about the telegraph, telephone and fax machines. Commerce happens by transactions, reliable communications, and by way of example, YouTube influences and enables commercial enterprise. Don’t be a dunce.
Data centers require huge amounts of water. We have none. Putting them in the desert, especially during a severe drought makes zero sense. Plant them in Nebraska.
I see that you’re not familiar with the Ogallala aquifer crisis.
Misinformed. Water can be used for cooling, look on the roof tops of the hotels and casinos. Except in the case of well designed data centers, water is in closed loop similar to the radiator in your car, that also uses water to cool the engine.
Data centers use evaporative cooling too (a non-closed system)
Yeah, they use both, so the amount they’re “drinking” isn’t totally lost but it’s not at all returned to the river/aquifer/whatever either. But I believe the really high water usage numbers that are thrown out there count the extra water necessary for power generation, even though 1) the power may be generated in more water rich areas and 2) is irrelevant for hydro power.
All this talk about rap beef invaribaly begs the question: if one were to create an entree called “Rap Beef,” what would such a dish consist of? Should it be braised, smoked, stewed, etc? I think we can all agree we’d order the Rap Beef if it were a commonly-accepted menu item.
Marijuana smoked beef served on top of mom’s spaghetti.
Parmesan coming from the shredder already
it’s like beef wellington, but instead of duxelles it’s coated with sherm
The Sun vs. RJ fight is really hilarious when you look at social media comments. The Sun has an army of morons commenting on their posts saying they are the last independent journalistic voice in Las Vegas, and that the RJ is a rag that is trying to buy out competition.
It truly baffles me how uneducated the every day person is. Not an ounce of critical thinking or reading comprehension skills.
They are fighting over who will be captain of a sinking ship. The RJ’s print circulation has collapsed in the last 10 years, even by failing print standards
4:42 PM here. In 2015, the RJ had a print circulation of around 232,000. As of three years ago, it dipped below 40,000. Presumably, those numbers have not improved. Assuming, generously, that each print copy is read by two people (80,000) that’s a market penetration of under 4% of Clark County’s population on any given day.
Maybe the reason that Glenn Cook, when writing about the RJ, uses a big swinging dick tone/energy is because of massive shrinkage over the last decade. The print version of truck nuts, I guess.
And the RJ has no cold water to blame either.

It’s sad. I think print media is important. Having a paper on the table while you are having morning coffee is a ritual I miss. More importantly, reading print slows you down enough so that you think about what’s being said. Contrast to your phone, where it’s difficult to have an attention span, writers have to use inflammatory headlines to get any notice, and the measure iof quality is the number of clicks. Swipe away.
As someone said the other day, this is like the captains of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the Titanic bragging about who stayed afloat the longest.
While Ralston is a smarm artist at times, the Indy is the true counterpaper to the R/J with the Current a distant third. The Sun has relegated itself to a blip on the radar.
Story about an attorney removed from the courtroom. What do folks think of this. Looked like attorney was disrespectful to judge then was taken down. Bit over the top.
