https://www.casino.org/news/supporters-say-las-vegas-to-benefit-from-virgin-usa-high-speed-train-station-details-released/

Who is going to drive 90 mins (minimum) from LA to Victorville to catch a train to Vegas. How is this project going to increase tourism?

What I don't get is that every time a high speed train is proposed, it always end in Victorville and not somewhere like Ontario, California, or Anaheim, California? I know there are some big a$$ mountains just southwest of Victorville and the drive through them is winding – maybe they don't want to have to deal with that using at train? Any ideas?

It was my understanding at one time that they were going to circumvent the El Cajon Pass issue by running rail from Lancaster/Palmdale to Victorville. Victorville as a terminal makes no sense

This will not work unless they make a deal with Union Pacific to somehow use the existing right of way through Cajon Pass and, at least for now, run a conventional train the last leg of the way into So Cal. Otherwise you can just head to Victorville to do the meth lab tour, much as people go wine tasting elsewhere.

I would imagine acquiring the necessary right of way in the LA basin is much, much harder than it is in the Mojave Desert.

The biggest problem is that the capacity is 65,000 people and they are only providing 2500 parking spaces . . .

Oh Wait, that's Allegiant/Raiders stadium . . . sorry.

Anyone else getting emails everyday reminding me to bar dues? This is beyond annoying.

10:45–It may be annoying, but when these dues aren't paid on time, the late fees can be pretty significant.

Worse yet is falling behind on CLE. They are pretty serious about that. They remind people a couple times and then suspend them from practice pending completion. This gets people's attention in a hurry, and they then immediately take courses on line or in person so that the pending suspension can be warded off or promptly reversed.

They have always been pretty aggressive about these administrative matters, but I've practiced long enough to know that sometimes an annoying reminder can ultimately be a good thing.

I never want to sound like a State Bar apologist, and I have never professed to be their biggest fan, but although there is a lot I could complain about concerning the State Bar, these reminders are real low on my list of complaints.

If anyone needs credits in a hurry at a very reasonable cost, I recommend attorneycredits.com. That's how I picked up my last few hours in December, plus a few more to get a head start on this year. Very easy to use. The whole CLE requirement is just a big scam in my view, but this is an easy way to get it done.

11:13, but if these reminders are sent repeatedly and months in advance of the fees being due, or they are even sent to people who have paid, that can be annoying if it is some mass email sent to all members regardless of their payment status.

But since I for one have not received these emails(as best that I remember), I don't know if they are individually tailored to each person's situation, or are a mass email to everyone. If it is mass emails, I can understand why that would be annoying to those who are already in compliance.

But I agree with you about CLE. They take no prisoners.

About 25 years ago I came up on the deadline and were a unit or two short. There were no pending live seminars in the immediate future, and this was well before the availability of online CLE(in fact, it was before the availability of pretty much online anything).

So, I had to appear at the State Bar Office and listen to a video tape of a past seminar(or perhaps it was just audio tape).

They did provide me microwave popcorn and a Diet Pepsi. But they entered the room several times during the two hours to make certain I didn't nod off.

But since the presentation was by really skilled and interesting criminal defense counsel like Momot and Pitaro,it held my attention.

These days the online CLE quickly repeats a code once or twice during each hour that the listener must write down and then subsequently enter, to prove they were listening. I find it is stated so quickly that even if one is paying adequate attention they can still miss it.

11:26–I had a similar experience 20 years or so ago.

But I was not offered popcorn or a soft drink, so consider yourself lucky.

To 11:26 — I have not received any of these reminders (neither CLE or State Bar Dues), so I am guessing that the reminders are only sent to those not yet in compliance. I too welcome reminders!

Well if you got some good gossip, please do share. A quick google search rendered nothing of value on a potential closure.

I’m always curious about the reasons behind these large firm implosions. Bad lease deal? Too much greed on the part of the top two or three people? All of the above?

Here is the problem however: K&L has always worked on sort of a "workshop" eat-what-you-kill model. It was great for Bob and Nile who took their sliver but also always left them with not much that they really could sell to another firm.

If the shop workers are about to lose their workshop, then they don't have too much leverage, unless they just want to go solo.

Well, in addition to being legally controversial, it also turns out Judge Reinhardt was a sexist scumbag. Anyone surprised?

I'm no Reinhardt fan, but I find this puzzling. He probably had 200 law clerks over the years, all ultra-progressive social justice warriors. Only one was willing to say Reinhardt was a harasser? Every Reinhardt clerk I know would LOVE to expose some powerful person's abuse of power. It just doesn't make sense to me.
