  • From a press release:

The Nevada Court of Appeals will hold oral arguments at the Thomas & Mack Moot Courtroom at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas William S. Boyd School of Law on January 28, 2020 at 10:30 a.m.

These “on the road” arguments further the court’s commitment to give students and citizens who do not have easy access to the official appellate courtrooms the opportunity to see the court in action.  This will be the fourth time the Court of Appeals has held oral arguments at the law school and the first since Judge Bonnie Bulla joined the court last March. The court has also held on the road oral arguments in Las Vegas at Canyon Springs High School, Advanced Technologies Academy (A-TECH), Liberty High School,  Faith Lutheran High School and Hyde Park Middle School.

Two cases from Clark County will be heard. Students, faculty and the public are invited to attend. Chief Judge Michael Gibbons, and Judges Jerry Tao and Bonnie Bulla will answer questions from the audience after the arguments are concluded.

The court will hear the cases of City of Henderson v. Spangler and Hanson v. State. In City of Henderson v. Spangler, a police officer was denied workers’ compensation benefits for hearing loss he claims happened due to exposure to loud noises on the job over a long period of time. The City argues, among other things, that Spangler should not receive workers’ compensation because his injury does not meet the legal definition of “accident.” In Hanson v. State, Brandon Hanson appeals his first degree murder conviction, arguing that there was not enough evidence to prove the deliberation and premeditation necessary to convict him of first degree murder for the stabbing death of his former girlfriend.

Why the heck did taxpayers pay for the Supreme Court building down here if the courts are just going to perform for high school kids. I hate the way they schedule arguments down here. Even if there are all Southern Nevada counsel appearing, the court will still schedule arguments for up North. We got ripped off.

Not only are these COA hearings, the Supreme Court has been holding (one or two) hearings at Boyd for years. It's a great opportunity for law students (and others) to see an actual appellate case. Maybe the Supreme Court building isn't used as much as it could be – but the law school hearings don't factor in.

Seems like a good learning opportunity and minimal taxpayer cost to me. I don't find anything wrong with it.

The Taj Ma-Hardesty is a HUGE unnecessary ripoff and boondoggle. With that said, it has nothing to do with appellate arguments being held one morning a year at the Law School. Every state in which I have practiced (5) does this. It makes sense and is educational for support of the law school and its students. Conducting hearings one day a year in a Junior High is perhaps another story. But appellate arguments at the law school is fine.

9:20 – My understanding is that the taxpayers did not pay for the Supreme Court building in Las Vegas. It was privately funded and financed, and the Supreme Court is leasing the space. Aside from paying rent (which I believe is less than what was being paid for space at the RJC) the taxpayers aren't paying anything for the building itself. This information could easily be located and confirmed, but hey why let the facts get in the way of a good rant right? Same goes for the first line from 2:06 as well.

Speaking of the Supreme Court, what is being done with the top floor of the RJC? I've never been able to get a definitive answer out of anyone to that question.

2:30…. Where did you get your information that it is ACTUALLY less than was paid at the RJC? As you say, "information could easily be located and confirmed, but hey why let the facts get in the way of a good rant right?"

to 5:41,, I believe the Chief Judge uses it for their docket. At least Judge Linda Bell did so when she was Chief.

Here is a video of all the employees leaving the building in the dark yelling, "I hope this news makes it to the Las Vegas Law Blog"

2:31,

I get being excited about going home, but that was just embarrassing. Does anyone know which judges those employees work for? Yikes! The second one to come through completely lost his mind.

That was crazy – the guy that stumbled in the dark on the way out, looked a lot like Jerry Lewis when he screamed "Heyyy Ladyyyy!"

I was surprised by how many court employees in that video were wearing Kobe jerseys today. Even a couple of judges? That was unexpected.
