There was a class action filed in 2016 arguing that the fees, which were only supposed to be used to offset COSTS of operating the PACER system, were being used as an IT slush fund for courtroom tech.

This is 10:06 – I remember that class action and have wondered what happened to it. It's just not plausible that the hundreds of millions of dollars that PACER generates goes to upkeep. Or if it does, a congressional investigation into fraud and waste is necessary.

More postmortem on the judicial elections. And yes, I feel I have the right to bellyache as I do get involved with these elections, including monetary support to candidates who I think will constitute an upgrade.

A judge who was admittedly too harsh in rebuking a recalcitrant prospective juror, and who tossed a pocket constitution a couple feet, is on the verge of judicial extinction.

But as for two judges who as prosecutors caused an innocent man to be in stir for over two decades, one appears destined for convincing re-election, while the other will receive the ultimate legal brass ring, a seat on our state's highest court.

Attorney apathy and lack of involvement in these elections is just one problem.

The main problem lies with our media. Our only daily paper, the RJ, seems to pay very little heed to these matters, and their ultra-conservative editorial policy would appear to suggest that they probably admire these judges as former hard-charging, law-and-order prosecutors, and therefore we need to recognize occasional mistakes will be made when prosecutors are appropriately aggressive, etc.

But this is no mere "mistake".

Nor should it be colored by political leanings. It should not matter whether someone is a democrat or republican, nor how conservative a newspaper's editorial policy is. This is outrageous and appalling, and that's all there is to it. Only minor internet news outlets paid mind to this story. But the RJ and our local news broadcast network affiliates seem to largely ignore it.

At least one of those two judges acknowledge SOME accountability.

Sorry for the verbosity. End of rant.

Ozzie for Supreme Court

For the reasons mentioned by 12:30, among other reasons, not sure Ozzie will do it.

I could be wrong, but an awfully large gap between them in the primary. And there is no indication that Ozzie will close the fund-raising or name-recognition gap. If anything, based on Ozzie trailing so much in the Primary results, if anything his opponent becomes even stronger in fund-raising and enlarging the gap between them even more.

Plus, 12:30 has only partially identified the many dynamics which indicate that the Fred Steese wrongful conviction story will continue to be largely ignored by our major news outlets.

So "Ozzie For Supreme Court" is a good sentiment, and I agree with it, but it is an election with an obvious, almost pre-ordained, result unless some of the mentioned dynamics can be dramatically altered.
