Is anyone (other than the BoG and Judiciary) actually going to the Annual Meeting in Austin?

I've heard that attendance is down to a couple of hundred people. At a time when the bar was much smaller, attendance was much larger. They should be required to hold this within driving distance. If AOC stopped paying for judges to go, and we stopped paying the tab for bar staff and the governors, there would probably be less than 20 people attending.

Yes. Enough freebies for the elite. Make the members' annual meeting local and accessible for the actual members. Also it should be streamed online for member viewing since members are already footing the bill.

I'm not going to the Annual Meeting, and neither are any of the 14 other attorneys in my office.

The people who are heavily involved in the bar remind me of the same types who did student government in high school.

Have you read their bios and self-laudatory claptrap about how great the SBN is? If there was just one candidate who said "Look, the State bar has been taking your money for a long time and delivering very little. My platform is to blow up the system and start from scratch. Kim Farmer- out. Stan Hunterton? Out", well I would not only vote for them but actively campaign and work to get them elected to BoG.

Yeah, I was hoping for hints in the bios on who might have such a position, but **crickets** on that. The best I could do was not vote for any incumbent. But the new ones will probably become just like the existing ones.

The new ones who are just elevating from the Clark County Bar Association or Young Lawyers Section– they are the same.

I've seen some smokin' hot attorneys in deposition and around the courthouse lately. I feel the hotness of the bar has improved tremendously in recent years. I just wish I had some names to go with these…uhhh…faces.

I had a cute brunette chick make a sex/masturbation joke on the record in deposition a few weeks ago. It was pretty spectacular. My client was so excited we had to break so he could adjust himself.

I like the sexy redheads…the more tattoos, the better. Ms. Tarmu comes to mind.

Red heads are crazy. Brunettes are boring. Blondes have my vote.

I volunteered at Boyd a few weeks ago and noticed the class was filled with some good looking guys and gals. Guess the practice of law isn't just for the ugly anymore.

Tech talk – solo practitioner here, trying to kit out my office. Thoughts on the ScanSnap ix500? Is it the amazing little machine it is reported to be throughout the interwebs?

only downfall of it is that it doesnt scan more than 50-75 pages at a time. but if you are trying to scan that much at once, i guess you got bigger problems to worry about lol

I have one ix500 on each attorney's desk at my office and each paralegal's desk. They are awesome. My only gripe is that I can't figure out how to skip the 'Save to folder' step and have it scan everything into a specific folder on my computer with each scan without having to select 'save to folder' then selecting a folder and hitting save. If I could do that, it would be even better!

Why not just lease a copier for $200 a month that everyone uses. What paralegal or attorney wants to scan their own docs?

Because the ix500 automatically rotates, crops, scans both sides, deletes empty pages, OCRs the document, and does it all at a resolution and speed that kicks the $200 /month copier-printer-scanner-when-it-isn't-down-and-waiting-its-monthly-service-call's ass?

With the price of Scanners and laser printers having dropped so far, along with the narrowing of the cost per page for the consumables of the printer, does it really make sense to pay a lease payment for a copier when an inexpensive scanner and printer accomplishes the same thing without a hard monthly cost?

Ehhhh.. I'd say that depends strongly on your practice. Litigation practice that frequently requires full printouts of files hundred of pages long for depos? Get the copier. Whoever is doing the depo prep will thank you. The copier does them much, much faster. Not higher quality, mind. Just faster. So I'd you want your own docs to look good, get Typography For Lawyers and a good laser printer.

@5:56am here – We have a 45 page per minute Toshiba color copier that scans 50 pages per minute (one-sided & duplex), staples, hole punches, and even makes booklets with center staples if we want (and can be printing someone else's document while I'm scanning mine.)
The caveat? It's down the hall and not in my office.
If I need to scan a document (be it 5 pages or 50 pages) and I have the ix500 on my desk, I can pop it in there, hit the scan button and save it directly into the clients' folder, and not have to get up and walk down the hall to do the same. Lastly – when you can buy an off-lease copier like we have for ~$3k, buy your own factory original toner off Amazon, and have access to, but not monthly service payments to, a copier service company – why would you lease a copier? Ours has malfunctioned twice in the past three years and it cost me ~$400 to have it fixed the first time (rollers & something else) and ~$600 the second time (fuser assembly.) When it gets worse, we'll go back and buy another ~$3k off-lease copier/MFP.

You lease for the same reason you lease a car. It includes all toner, service etc and it cost less than buying a used machine and the hassle of having issues. Whatever works financially depending on the firm.
