As one of our commenters noted, the State Bar convinced the Supreme Court to issue an order increasing the yearly CLE requirement to 13 hours with the additional hour being a class in addiction and/or mental health. Lest you think no one was thinking when they did this, see Justice Pickering’s noble dissent. [ADKT 0478]
Should the Clark County DA’s office be removed from a case because of the deputy DA’s (Liz Mercer) is dating a former Metro detective who is the focus of an ongoing FBI investigation? [LasVegasNow]
A former chief deputy DA, Gregory Knapp, is representing James Beach, the man who is facing a murder charge after he one-punched a tourist who ended up dead. [RJ]
I attended the session that was offered earlier this week. What a complete and total waste of time and resources. A bunch of platitudes combined with stuff I probably learned in the eighth or ninth grade. Useless.
Justice Pickering is by far our most erudite justice.

Serious question–are there any efforts underway to disband/defund the State Bar? I'm interested in joining the effort. This addiction cle is the last straw for me.
Can a sufficient amount of lawyers band together to form a different State bar? I've wondered this for a while, but not enough to put more effort in than asking on this blog.
State Bar is created by statute and the Supreme Court is given the authority to promulgate rules to govern it. We have what is called an "integrated" Bar which is all the governance stuff is "integrated" with the social stuff. In Indiana, for instance, you pay for administration of admissions and discipline and if you want a collegial atmosphere and a monthly magazine you can voluntarily join the State Bar of Indiana.

I think the court is going the opposite direction – there's an ADKT which would allow longer terms for the board of bar governors. We need people to run who will actually scrutinize staff and expenses.

10:29: the answer to this question would seem to be no, at least not without the supreme court deciding to disband the existing group and replace it with an alternative group. Admission to practice law in this is governed by supreme court rule 49, with the annual fees and other assorted membership requirements in the bar detailed in SCR 98. Basically the SCR gives the state bar a monopoly and expressly authorizes the bar to collect fees (amounts are set by rule) etc. I guess you could petition the supreme court to dissolve the current entity and create a new state bar, but absent that, I don't see how you could.

I have a wiznet question, how long will be able to view docs on wiznet?
As a corollary, is Wiznet going to remain the access to the filed documents? Because efile & serve doesn't have that capability, and I don't see that changing.

In the last 6-12 months or so, I think I've seen almost as much criticism of the bar than I've previously seen here or on the late WWL in the last several years combined. Obviously this goes much deeper than just a few perpetual cranks sounding off.

I have never complained before about the Bar, but it really, really seems to be getting out of control and downright crazy.

On a totally unrelated topic, I just saw a Naqvi commercial. Dude needs to seriously lay off the hair product. It was comical. My pre-teen child even cracked a joke about it when he saw it.
The firm's holiday card looked like an advertisement for a brothel.

Sessions puts out a Memo telling his prosecutors to charge as heavily as they can in every case. Absolutely! We need more people incarcerated at a much higher price to society. When the evidence is that we are spending billions more than we need to on unnecessarily locking people up, this is the policy we came up with. I am a Republican but seriously, what a bunch of out of touch assholes.
Hey all, can anyone recommend an easy way to get the CLE done? This is my first year I've had to do it and so far I just have my ethics credits. I heard you can get some CDs?
Thank you Justice Pickering!

It's just standard rent-seeking from the folks who offer the courses. They probably lobbied the MCLE Board hard to suggest the rules change.

Monday is when Wiznet goes read only. Not sure for how long though
