Firm Spotlight: Thorndal Armstrong Delk Balkenbush & Eisinger

  • Law

Today we throw the firm spotlight on Thorndal Armstrong Delk Balkenbush & Eisinger, a Nevada firm that started in Las Vegas over 40 years ago with 2 attorneys and which now employs 26 attorneys in three offices (including Reno and Elko). The firm deals with all types of civil matters from litigation to appellate work across a variety of practice areas, but has a strong background in insurance defense work.

Among the firm’s employees is Michael P. Lowry, blogger/author at Compelling Discovery, one of the ABA’s 7th Annual Blawg 100 Honorees. If you haven’t seen the blog, it is a useful resource focusing on discovery (like this post on depositions in light of the recent amendments to NRCP 30 as a result of ADKT 487).

What do you know about the firm? Is it a good place to work? Do they pay well? Have you had any cases against them?

They seem to be one of the very few old-school Nevada insurance defense firms that stayed intact and didn't get swallowed by one of the regional or national behemoths. Good for them.

If Alverson is the bad side of Las Vegas insurance defense sweat shop work (which it is), Thorndal is probably the good side of insurance defense sweat shop work. Really nice people.

However, I've heard their monthly minimum billables are around 180 per month, which is a tough number to hit (or exceed) when your time is getting cut by the billing partner and then cut again by the insurance company.

Speaking of Alverson, RJ says that former Judge Halverson died. http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/former-las-vegas-judge-halverson-dies-age-56

As did that man who once had a scrotum that weighed 130 pounds. Large people have had a bad day all around.

Wolfson has his first challenger: Raymond James "Jim" Duensing, Jr., listed as a libertarian.

Constable John Bonaventura decided that since he can't run for constable again, he'll run for county commissioner. HA!

Duensing has a felony trial pending. Memba Metro tased and shot him as he bolted from a traffic stop about 4 years ago cause he had warrants and had a gun in his pants. I don't think Steve has to worry much about this challenger. Look for Duensing's website about traffic tickets. Scary anti-government type.

Billing requirements were 180 per month when I worked there a few years back and the overall work environment was a bit joyless and personality devoid to say the least, but both John Thorndal and Jim Armstrong are genuinely nice guys and the firm as a whole is more professional and competent than most.
