Just got an email from the AOC (the courts one… not the congresswoman from NY) asking me to fill out a survey about virtual hearings. The survey is charitably a mess.

Although I don’t agree with what this guy did and think his actions are disgusting and part of a bigger problem in society, it is sad he took his own life. He must have been angry and sad.

Channel 8 is reporting that the cops had been called by his girlfriend for a domestic and that he returned to the apartment and died of a self-inflicted gun shot in the parking lot. This raises several issues. First, the guy clearly had some issues. He did not just harass Sisolak – he told him that he should be strung up and he yelled racist slurs at the first lady. Second, his podcast was drugs and fighting (Cannabis and Combat). While I'm all for some edibles, I don't think drugs and guns are a good mix and it does raise some red flags when that is what a grown man chooses to focus his life on. Third, it was a domestic call so either his girlfriend or his neighbors reported him. Anyone who has walked into family court knows that there are tons of false DV calls, but they don't typically end in suicide. They end with a blue card from the cops and a TPO. Finally, the risks of dying by suicide are exponentially higher when there are guns in the home. Yet another tragic side-effect of this country's fixation with guns. At the end of the day, the guy was probably a jackass, but didn't deserve this. My heart goes out to his family. This is a very sad news story.

Wow, who would have expected that this guy would have mental health issues?

Sad story. What he did to Governor Sisolak was outrageous. But, nobody deserves to have their life defined by their worst moment(s). And, death by suicide is tragic. I hope those that loved him will find peace and support in the wake of his death.

1:09 I'm certainly not cheering about the suicide, but it doesn't sound like the behavior was an isolated thing for him. Seems like that's who he was.

The judiciary and/or the executive need to put a stop to judges choosing their own successors. Anti-democratic (small d) and anti-American.

I filled out the virtual hearing survey. How about doing something for once to make the practice of law easier and more convenient for the practitioners in the trenches? Why not allow the the lawyers and clients decide if they deem a personal appearance necessary? Why set a bunch of unnecessary pleading rules and hurdles for counsel to avail themselves of a virtual appearance? Why allow the personal idiosyncrasies of a few judges to take precedence over common sense? Probably a waste of time but I filled it out.

One issue is public access. How is the public to have open access to a virtual hearing? Not everyone has internet and a smart phone.

WE NEED TO HAVE IN PERSON COURT BECAUSE THE 3 PEOPLE IN LAS VEGAS THAT DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO INTERNET AND A SMART PHONE MIGHT WANT TO OBSERVE A COURT PROCEEDING. SORRY LAWYERS, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO DRIVE HALF AN HOUR TO COURT, SIT THERE FOR AN HOUR, DO A 5 MINUTE STATUS CHECK, AND DRIVE ANOTHER HALF HOUR BACK TO OFFICE.

Court rooms are open and the virtual participants are speaking as if they were present, in front of a live (or semi-live) judge. A person who wishes to observe can just go and make a personal appearance at the courthouse and see everything, just as if everyone were there in person. Public access has nothing to do with it.

I found it much easier to attend multiple hearings at the same time. I recently had three hearings on the same morning. It was much easier to sit at my desk using my desktop computer, laptop, and phone to monitor the three courtrooms so that when one of my cases was called, I could attend. Fortunately, it worked out.

I just have to comment how strange it is to appear in front of Escobar who is not only not present in the courtroom but is not even on video. Juxtapose this to (a) Kishner who is sanctioning people who appear by video without permission and (b) Susan Johnson who requires that you be on video before you are allowed to appear.

It's so annoying that we are all subjected to the vagaries of the various judge's preferences and we can't just have one standard set of rules. Even pre-COVID and virtual appearances, there are no standard processes and some of the individual judge's rules are just nonsense designed to flex their judicial muscles and run us in circles. Their job is fundamentally to serve the public. It serves no one to sanction an attorney who has the audacity to log into bluejeans for a 5 minute status check.

The right people rarely end up on the bench. Seems like there are even fewer now than a decade ago.

She won't go anywhere. Although I question her ability to be impartial. How is she from the bench generally? This incident notwithstanding.

7:41– you question her ability to be impartial and yet no one questions the impartiality of judge after judge who goes and prostrates themselves before LVPPA and every other pro-LEO organization. I saw a candidate for LV Muni Court who touted her endorsements from Washoe County Sheriffs and rural counties that would never appear in front of her. No one bats an eyelash when judge say pro-cop things.

I see no problem with her comments. Who cares what LVPPA says? They're just clinging to the last vestiges of prestige and attention they have. Gen Z has little to no trust of cops and when they start voting, police union endorsements aren't going to be worth the paper they're written on. This is the last decade where LVPPA is even going to be consulted by the media. They're well on their way to irrelevance.

741 Again
Regardless of the LVPPA's opinion on the matter. I just don't like the pandering, even if she was trying to get him to take personal responsibility. The whole diatribe is unnecessary and (I think) will ultimately be trotted out when she runs for re-election.
