District Court Dept. 28 – Judicial Primary Primer

  • Law

District Court Department 28 features sitting Judge Ron Israel fighting for his judicial life against contenders Susan Bush and Robert Pool (part of a group that the RJ calls “The Revengers.”

What do you think? Is Judge Israel deserving of another term or is it time for a change?

Who should the people vote for in District Court Department 28?

If I died and came back as a female attorney, I would want to be Susan.

Has anyone had any interactions with Susan Bush? What do you think her temperament would be on the bench? Is she bright, fair, etc.?

I am not voting for Susan. It is not that I dislike her. I just don't think she would make a good judge.

I am voting for Susan. It is not that I like her. I just think that Israel is a disaster and Pool would be worse.

Why is Pool so bad?

Because of the crowd he hangs out with. See the article on the Revengers.

Clark county would be so fortunate to have a judge as considerate and intelligent as Susan Bush.

Ron Israel is a decent judge who should be retained. He tries hard to be a good judge. He has caused some heartburn to some of the plaintiff attorneys. Just because Susan Bush is pretty is no reason to vote for her. Look at Stefany Miley.

I didn't want to say this, but are you serious 3:24? Have you seen the teeth on Mrs. Bush? No one is voting for her because she is pretty. And, she does not even compare to Stefany Miley's hotness. Sorry bud – but if you are a guy, you are either blind, gay, or both if you think Susan Bush is hot.

Now that there's been a discussion of how aesthetically pleasing each one is(or is not), why don't you now provide helpful observations of their legal skills and temperament, so that those who don't really know them can cast a better informed vote? As for me, I hope I've never voted for a judge, or any public official, based on personal appearance. If you have an opinion of the skills and integrity of the challengers, and an opinion of the sitting judge in this regard, I'm sure we would all benefit from it..But the type of lampoonery that this thread indulges in is not really helpful, and it's rather unkind. Don't mean to be a stick-in-the-mud, but come on.

Okay, but as 10:49 indicates, let us know a bit about each. We may have to select between three not-so-god choices.

The fact that this has turned into a discussion on looks is disturbing.

Ron Israel has an approval rating of 61%– A D-

Susan is AV rated, is a court appointed arbitrator, and has experience in complex civil litigation as well as criminal defense and family law. She is a beautiful person inside and out. Susan has a strong work ethic and an even temperament; she is intelligent enough to make reasoned and thoughtful decisions from the bench. And no, I am not Susan, but I do know her very well. We will be very fortunate to have her as a member of our judiciary.

I know very little about Robert Pool, other than he is a deputized constable, and ran because Ron Israel sanctioned him $11,000 in the case wherein he represented the Las Vegas Constable.

Susan is running because she loves our community and knows that we deserve better than what we have in Department 28.

I still would rather have Israel than Bush, thank you.

In my experience, Ron Israel has made solid decisions. He has ruled against my client as often as he has ruled for my client, but in every case I felt comfortable knowing that he had read everything and made a decision on the facts and the law. I don't necessarily expect the judge to "get it right" every time, as often "right" varies on the eyes of the beholder. It is easy to tell when the judge has not taken the time to read the briefs and is shooting from the hip, and I have never felt that way with Judge Israel.

I don't know anything about Susan Bush, and Pool sounds like a lunatic. He was sanctioned by both Judge Israel and Judge Fehrenbach.

I recently did a jury trial in front of Judge Israel, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well he handled the trial. I agree with 8:54 AM that Judge Israel does not always get it right, but I do think he reads the briefs and tries to be familiar with the issues prior to the hearing, which is better than many of the judges on the bench. Judge Israel seems to get angry quicker than I would expect from a Judge, but otherwise, he seems to be taking his job seriously and trying hard.

I agree that is sounds like Pool might not be the best guy for the job, given his antics.

Bush = unknown.

Many of the female candidates are playing the gender game which favors females in elections. It is a given that Susan Bush will emerge from the primary–two males and a female. She will probably square off against Israel in the general. Probably Israel win in the end but he will have to fight hard to keep his seat. He is not a bad judge just a judge who has made some enemies.

So, by female candidates being female they are playing the gender game? Your logic makes sense.

I have litigated against Pool. In my view, to say he lacks the appropriate temperament to be a judge would be a vast understatement.

I have been in front of Israel a few times and the one observation I made was that he understands t(And attempts to apply) the rules of evidence. Unlike the other judges who either don't understand hearsay or are too lazy to apply the rule, (or best evidence or foundation) Israel understands these are a rules and not just guides, giving his rulings some predictability.

Ron Israel is super sexy, and every time I go into court, I can tell how incredibly smart he is. I have to vote to keep Israel!
