With primary ballots set to start arriving in mailboxes next week, it’s time to talk about some of the contested judicial primary races featured on that ballot. We welcome your comments on the qualifications of the candidates as well as any information you can offer to help voters make an educated decision. Just remember to keep your comments appropriate and try to avoid defamation.
For District Court Judge, Department 24, the candidates are:
- Erika D. Ballou
- Mickey Bohn
- Dan Gilliam
- Dena Rinetti
- Joe Vadala
Mickey gets my vote. I think it will be a Bohn v. Gilliam race. Please no Rinetti.
Gilliam seems to have quite a budget although I've never heard of the guy before. Probably going for Mickey here.
If you have any friends who practice crim, ask them. You might change your mind.
Go watch Mickey Bohn's you tubes, awful. No, on him.
Dan's got my vote! He's been both a prosecutor and a defense attorney and is very level headed. We need more of that on the bench!!
Dan is logical, level headed, smart. He's been on both sides of the aisle, well respected by all. No other option. 100% Dan.
Unless something changes, which is prone to happen, Dept. 24 is a civil only department. Do any of these candidates have any significant civil law experience?
Judicial assignments get changed often. If someone with criminal experience wins this department, the assignment can be switched.
Mickey has tons of property law experience and has successfully tolerated Eddie Haddad for almost a decade.
There is always a shakeup after an election cycle. Merely because its a civil department NOW doesn't mean anything. Just look at how often departments change focus – for example, Judge Eric Johnson USED to be a criminal only department, but is not anymore. Further, Judge Villani USED to be a civil/criminal caseload, but now is only Criminal. Things change.
Vadala is a bored career government attorney looking for a change. His related experience is drawn from farming out cases to expensive outside counsel to handle. He quit law too for a few years. The others have more practical court time experience at all the levels of courts.
Don't forget to vote for BOGs
Rinetti is an unpleasant prosecutor who has a less-than-stellar reputation. Ballou is a non-factor. Gilliam is probably the best all-round choice. He is a confident cordial person, and he may have the guts to do what he thinks right. As for the assignment of the court, that will change.
