A rare example of City leadership demonstrating some courage and reason in the face of shrill opposition. Creating an environment in which homelessness becomes less and less inconvenient is not a solution to homelessness. Creating an environment in which dangerous and intrusive activities, which infringe on the well-being of the greater population, are tolerated similarly will not solve homelessness. We must as a society enforce our laws.
This was really a debate about dealing with the symptoms of homelessness, not homelessness itself. Neither side can claim the moral high ground.
Something had to be done. A good step in the right direction.
"Something had to be done." No doubt. The people that showed up to protest certainly don't have to deal with feces and needles on the property where they are trying to conduct business. But this ordinance doesn't do anything to solve homelessness, it just shoves the mess (literally) out of downtown.
This ordinance will have little to no real affect. The sheer numbers of homeless in the downtown area isn't going to change because of this ordinance. Enforcing this ordinance is impossible. Clark County Detention Center is not capable of housing all the homeless offenders this ordinance is directed at and the homeless aren't going to be intimidated into changing the way that they exist by the threat of a misdemeanor jail booking. If anything, the homeless will utilize this ordinance for short term housing at CCDC, maybe some medical and dental treatment while making the work lives for CCDC staff more stressful.
I see a slew of civil suits against the city representing the arrested homeless with millions in settlements paid for by the taxpayers.
Since when has downtown Vegas not had a homeless problem?
I agree with 11:18. LVMPD has no interest in dealing with the homeless downtown.
The result will be a bunch of outstanding bench warrants, unpaid fines and a further strain on resources at CC Dentention. The Fed isn't going to step in as long as Nevada remains blue. Specifically rounding up homeless and transporting them for detention out in Jean is rife with so many legal challenges as a remedy that won't work either.
At 8:48 …We must as a society enforce our laws? So you recommend enforcing the laws from a bottom up viewpoint as the most effective way to remedy societal homelessness? Cooley Grad? Or just privileged upbringing?
Fact: The disproportional distribution of wealth and opportunity along with mental illness and drug addiction issues are at the heart of every major social disagreement dividing this country.
We already have plenty of laws, most of which are strictly enforced upon the poor and disadvantaged ,while selectively ignored upon the rest of us, and absolutely forgotten about with respect to the wealthy elite class.
Jefferson was a man beyond his time … The tree of liberty…
11:34 AM–The law is to fill in the gaps and authorize law enforcement to move the homeless. A lot of the homeless don't want help, don't want to go to a shelter, and want to sleep on the streets. That being said, when it comes to City Parks and City Streets, Las Vegas has City Marshalls' who take will take care of the problem. Las Vegas essentially has its own police department for these type of activities.
"Fact: The disproportional distribution of wealth and opportunity along with mental illness and drug addiction issues are at the heart of every major social disagreement dividing this country."
Bullshit. Peoples' ever-increasing almost religious belief and reliance on government is a far greater factor. And it is baffling. How can people possibly look at corrupt leadership, powerful public employee unions, a toxic two-party system, and mounting public debt and possibly believe that government knows what it's doing?
Is Aaron Ford going to run for governor?
I highly doubt he would in the next general as long as Sisolack is still around. Just doesn't make sense. Maybe in 7 years.
God help us all!
Aaron Ford, the Texas transplant front man for Bob Eglet! The same Aaron Ford that has no trial experience that is now the AG for the State of Nevada amid all the pending opioid litigation? Guess whose firm has secured all the county and state representation?
"Native Bob" runs this State from the French inspired Provincial Palace on 7th Street.
"Sissylack" will hold office in Carson at "Native Bob's" will.
Wynn, Adelson, Caesars all understand this… Why doesn't everyone else?
You are absolutely right! Eglet owned Harry Reid, now he owns the governor and the Attorney General. The only reason he latched onto Aaron Ford was because Ford could help him eliminate the caps on attorneys fees allowed outside counsel and Ford would insure him the opioid cases. Ford is a patsy and Eglet loves patsies.
Eglet will eventually be the victim of his own corrupt success. He plays "high stakes poker" with people's lives, and he plays for keeps!
But, So did Steve Wynn, and so did Billy Walters, so did Anthony Spilotro and so did Harry Reid, and have you seen him recently? Just pathetic!
Robert Eglet is a Riverboat Gambler in a vast desert mirage in his own mind that he grew up in.
My best guess is that he will eventually be taken down and disgraced from within his own very little circle. I'll put my money on Tracy "the beard",or Bob Adams will "turn" on him, only if the Feds ever take an interest in state corruption, not unlike Elaine Wynn did once outside authorities started snooping around on Steve.
His own ego and lust for more and more power will get him too!
He's got way more real enemies than real friends, and that math has never worked out for anyone period.
It will be interesting to see how his son as a lawyer fits into the future picture as well.
Every dime he has is the result of the suffering of someone else.
I hear that he now travels with personal security detail at all times.
Anyone else know if this is true or not?
What if Dennis Prince turns on him? That is why I thought it was so weird that he locked Prince out of the building. He was taking a big risk. Adams is a scared water boy whose entire career is based on Eglet. Tracy could not try a case if her life depended on it, and she loves the money. I hope Prince follows through.
Before Adams was Eglet's boy, he was Richard Harris' boy.
Your posts are appreciated. It is so true. I have someone in mind who all the above posts apply to but not named. When you are corrupt, karma always catches up.
No chance he runs for Gov. He was WAY too close to Kelvin Atkinson.
How does a project like this even get off the ground with a person like this at the helm?

"every local government needs an attorney hired by them who reports to them – elected district attorneys and city attorneys have inherent ethical conflicts and can't truly represent their clients"
My first reaction was, "wtf?" So the lawyer does the bidding of the local government instead of what is in the best interest of the people? How does being elected vs hired create an inherent conflict of interest?
I have a serious question – I live in st george utah and have never seen a homeless person here – why is that – I'm not trolling – could be weather, economics of retirement community – thoughts?
There are absolutely homeless people in St. George and even in Cedar City. You need to spend more time at the fountains between the children's museum and the Tabernacle. Every time I have taken my kids there there have been a few homeless people.
Oh I hadn't seen anyone – I thought bc it was so cold – unfortunately I'm not well informed on subject and can understand businesses etc but there has to be a better way – my ex gf was a dental student and would always work with homeless – wish each profession would too
This life as a lawyer is a miserable existence.
Unfortunately, the main reason life as a lawyer can be miserable is because of other lawyers.
If your entire self-worth and identity is wrapped up in being a lawyer, then perhaps.
2:11 – Hang in there.
There are things you can do with a law degree (including being a lawyer) that are not so bad as the drudgery that is typical law practice. But they are often not easy to get into (hence not typical). I'd recommend that you start a plan to get into a different type of law or field, and start executing on it, baby steps at least.
That could be anything from starting your own firm, changing to (or from) government practice, or going into a non-law related field.
3:10 has a point about life balance – but even if you have a good balance and you're not wrapped up in "being a lawyer," there are still those days that make you wish you were a barista or something instead.
The profession of being an attorney is best described as being parasitic no matter what type of law you practice.
Law school idealism quickly expires once you start practicing and realize that the work and social culture of being a lawyer is void of anything fulfilling. This profession is full of "successful losers". The most prominent of attorneys are tormented with drug and alcohol abuse, destroyed marriages and a self destructive lifestyle.
The reasons for all of this are numerous but the most prevalent reason is that the overwhelming majority of lawyers, and judges for that matter, are devoid of any real moral character traits coupled with narcissistic personality disorders.
The status quo egotistical attorney convinced of his/her own higher intelligence status removes themselves from the ability to acknowledge the genuine simple things in life that the human soul needs to be spiritually healthy.
The only real law that exists is natural law. If you choose a profession that requires that your financial success is dependent the destruction of others or that takes advantage of those experiencing unfortunate circumstances, or doing the dirty work for those that take advantage of others… You deserve the personal misery that you experience daily.
You can have money or time, but you can't have both. You can be wealthy or happy, but you can't have both. A successful life is defined by those you had an opportunity to see the best in you. Being an attorney doesn't bring out the best in anyone.
I collectively wasted 26 years of my life as a "very successful" licensed attorney, I was a partner in three different law firms before I abruptly walked away from the profession after the suicide of a client and his wife who had exhausted their entire life savings in legal fees in a failed attempt to save their only child's life in prolonged civil litigation.
I have never known one single attorney, judge or former attorney to be someone that had a healthy rewarding life until they quit the profession.
7:49, how much of your life did you devote to writing that? Thanks for your generalizations of all lawyers that you learned from The Paper Chase and Above the Law.
To your last point, I know many attorneys who are decent people and who have healthy rewarding lives. Sure, plenty are self-destructive, but your one size fits all assessment of all lawyers seems to be a projection of your own life. I'm living just fine and so are a lot of my lawyer friends. Buck up.
@ 8:38 Your lawyer friends? Obviously, you're a newbie!
Let's propose a homeless camp on the badlands golf course. Bet that would get everyone to settle the badlands litigation.
No, Silverstone Golf Course….there is no grass there
So in the last 48 hours let me recap….we are paying for LACSN who is a non profit who wants to provide for fee service to unions……
No; that's not what is happening.
And who is we?
Las Vegas City Council just criminalized being homeless…..and….
And….UNLV is now going to provide free legal services for students by a flunky who UNLV law wants to only pay part time………welcome to the Nevada .Bar
Who are you calling a flunky? Hopefully not the immigration clinic, because they do good work for vulnerable people. Imagine a pro se litigant from a foreign country trying to formulate a "particular social group" to convince the judge in open court that she qualifies for asylum. And what's wrong with offering free services to college students?
Read the post.
I would love to see a law suit against LACSN by tax payers to get our money. I am going to be fanned if state or county money is going to subsidize the culinary union.
Isn't it being funded through the CBA?
Damned
