A Courthouse Named Hardesty

  • Law

  • The Wynn harassment case results in regulation for gaming licensees. [RJ]
  • Families of two more victims sue owners of the Alpine Motel Apartments. [Fox5VegasRJ]
  • The caucus is over without too much drama…yet. Requests for recounts must be filed by 5 p.m. [Las Vegas Sun; TNI]
  • As some of you noted in the comments the other day, the Supreme Court and Nevada Court of Appeals Courthouse in Las Vegas will be named in honor of Justice James W. Hardesty on March 19, 2020. The company that is leasing the building to the court, EHB Companies, will install an inscription honoring Justice Hardesty on the courthouse. No details yet on what the inscription will say.  ed. The Nevada Supreme Court has postponed the naming ceremony. We will give you an update if we receive more information.

Perhaps this is because Hardesty will be retiring soon? He is both arrogant and destructive, by far the worst of the current sitting Supremes. If naming the building after him means imminent retirement, then I celebrate this honor.

I wonder how many public buildings in Northern Nevada are named for Southern Nevada people?

I also wonder if this has anything to do with Yohan Lowie currying favor with the justices with respect to his numerous high-profile litigations that almost certainly will wind up before the Supreme Court?

In the current Lowie-related appeals, the vast majority of the supreme court has recused itself.

I recommend a statute be constructed of Stan Hunterton formerly of OBC. He is standing over a group of Pro Bono clients left without counsel after persecuting their SOLO practitioners. He is masturbating, or perhaps menstruating, over the top of them, a sadistic glow on his face. At his feet are the corpses of his Bukakke drenched victims of former glory days. He smiles knowing that these people "couldn't afford services anyway." The victims look up, eyes stinging from persecution and bodily fluids, wondering how the Bar as a whole could allow someone like Hunterton to represent them.

@9:43a – if you wrote a book, I'd read it.

Dude/Dudette at 9:43: you should get out of law and write light porn ala Anaïs Nin haha. By the way, Stan was a horrible human being.

OMG, I remember reading Nin as a teen. It was not porn, it was erotica.

Naming it after Hardesty is appalling and quite a violation of the spirit of NRS 338.200: Prohibition against naming public building or structure after current member of governing body.  No public building or other public structure, other than a street or road, may be named after a person who is at the time a member of the governing body which has jurisdiction or control over the building or structure or which is responsible for it.

That's show-biz baby! Or in this case, separation of powers.

I'd rather have a court house named Hardesty than a Justice named Hardesty.

Thank you. This is appalling. And after such a bully, too.

Maybe it's a violation of the spirit, but I'm not sure it's a violation of the actual text. “'Governing body' means the board, council, commission or other body in which the general legislative and fiscal powers of a local government are vested." NRS 338.010(12). The NSC does not meet this test as it is neither a "local government" (see NRS 338.010(14)) nor are any "legislative and fiscal powers" vested therein. Not saying this is the right result, but may be the result nonetheless.

I understand your legal argument but clearly you have never dealt with the EDCR judges who think they own the RJC and set all the rules, regardless that there are other folk housed there. I'm not sure if the Supremes run their courthouses the same way, but it would surprise me if Hardesty didn't.

Can we talk about Kolesar & Leatham for a minute. What I've seen it looks like the doors are literally closing this week – is this a dissolution? Does anyone have more info? I had heard talk of a merger but I've seen talk otherwise. It was nice of the one poster the other day to set up an email link – I'm really bothered by this situation. I don't know enough about the firm but I know many lawyers and staff appear to be without jobs. Maybe there isn't anything else to discuss – I would just like to know that these attorneys and staff are going to be taken care of.

No there is a great deal to discuss regarding the implosion. It is an implosion with great losses to many people.

The Curse of Tivoli? I know of a small firm that looked for office space over there and was quoted a ridiculous price. Don't remember how much. I'm sure there were many causes but it would not surprise me if that were one.

That is an awesome space. I'm also sure it's not worth the lease.

I have heard that Kolesar and Leatham themselves are just retiring. Due to the structure of their firm and the expense lease made the most sense just to shut things down.

10:44 states "I would just like to know that these attorneys and staff are going to be taken care of."

Shouldn't be a problem. Bernie and Liz are giving them housing, food, Medicare for all, free college educations and everything else socialism can offer. And, at no cost to any of us! What a country!

They close on Friday. I have not heard of any auction. There is a great deal of demand for the good attorneys but not a lot for the staff. There was a possible merger with Fennemore last week but it was a horrible failure. The had a bad lease (sound familiar Alverson?) but it was an unsustainable business model that did them in.

I heard Fennemore ain't setting the world on fire, either. Funny how the lease gets blamed for everything when partners cannot run a business. Hope the innocent land on their feet.

If they are, I hope K&L doesn't file bankruptcy only to have the BK trustee claw them back.

If the named partners are retiring, why not pay all of your bills, and give your staff sufficient notice, so they land on their feet instead of leaving them scrambling during tax season, shitty.

The motorcycle case ended with acquittal? That is great news. Maybe the US Attorneys office will take a moment to ponder their role in the justice system. Maybe go after crooks or something, instead of innocent bikers and ranchers.

Myrhe still in the office down there? Then they are not interested in justice. They have exactly zero intention of pondering their role in the criminal system (I cannot use justice and AUSAs in the same sentence twice in a row).
