“I didn’t know there was a kid in the back,” man accused of fatally shooting 11-year-old in road rage told police. [RJ] — Feels like a fact pattern for “Depraved Heart” mens rea back in law class.

Please no. Blakesley would’ve spent 7 weeks just on this fact pattern.

“I didn’t know there was a kid in the back”
It does not matter if he knew or did not know.
The shooter was a dumb fuck kid who had a gun and was feeling tough. Road rage and no thought given to his reckless actions. Tragic, but he is no Charles Manson.

Guns don’t kill people. Dumb fucks kill people. Yes, with gun, but the guns themselves aren’t to blame. No, we aren’t going to properly fund education to reduce the number of dumb fucks. No, we aren’t going to restrict access to guns so that only non-dumb-fucks have them. These things just happen, and there’s no preventing them. We can only respond to them. How do we respond? By trying to convince more people, dumb fucks and non-dumb-fucks alike, to carry guns. Surely that will improve safety.

I dunno. If the stepfather was trying to run Johns off the road, Johns might be able to argue that he was acting in self-defense.

I love Ralston but it seems totally fair to refuse to attend a fundraising event at a nonunion property. The Indy has every right to choose Station Casinos, and politicians have every right to refuse to appear there.

I think it’s more a problem with regard to how they kowtowed to what the union said. They had no qualms until their contributions were at risk.

They’re politicians and they didn’t want to piss off a whole bunch of voters in the most union state in the country. I think we generally want politicians to be responsive to their constituents so I don’t have a problem with this.

Now I will criticize them for agreeing in the first place. The Station Casinos/Culinary fight is not exactly a secret and they should have known this would turn into an issue.

“To be honest, I actually thought about not telling the world what they did. But their behavior was so craven, and so emblematic of the politics of fear that is pervasive today that I felt I must. I write not out of anger — that has long passed — but because people should know what they did.”

Trademark sanctimonious Ralston.

I appreciate Ralston letting us know who is bowing to culinary. Not that I didn’t already know, but culinary is a cancer on this city. So good to know.

“culinary is a cancer on this city” GTFO. I’m a Mitt Romney former Republican, by no means a sympathizer to unions or the working class, but this is not a serious take. Every hospitality worker, union or not, benefits from the culinary union in this town. This trickles down to all of us.

i am a moderate democrat, and im not always a fan of the union. however, i also recognize that without a unified body, employers would take clear advantage to maximize profits. this has been evidenced going back to pre colonial times. yall forget FMLA was passed only in 1993 to protect those who simply wanted to keep their job while having a baby, or going through medical issues. 1993 is barely 30 years ago.

I do not love Ralston. He’s not as brilliant as he thinks he is. He was one of the few reporters in Las Vegas 40 years ago and one of the few that stuck around. Time for fresh talent and more investigative reporting.

I’m no fan of Ralston, but he is exceptionally bright. The strange thing about him is the screaming insecurity dripping all over him. He does not need to be so smug and pugilistic to win the respect of his audience, and elected officials, but that’s what he does. Ralston the substance is wonderful, the packaging is insufferable.

Prison isn’t supposed to be pleasant, but it also isn’t a place where we should accept that murders regularly take place. Nevada needs prison reform.

Actually carrying out death sentences would be a good beginning. Job training for real world jobs might reduce recidivism.

Prison reform would cost a lot of money. So would competent guards.

@11:07 This was prisoners killing another prisoner. Exactly what “reform” do you propose will stop this unsurprising behavior, short of mandatory solitary for everyone or giving the guards more lethal means to deal with the issue, both of which I’m sure you will say are “inhumane” or something similar? Serious question.

@12:21 the guards intervened 10 secons in. I’m not saying all prison guards are competent, as they surely aren’t. But this isn’t really a good example of that.

Yeah. This is not deliberative indifference, this is straight up public duty doctrine. How are you going to create a duty for the government to stop bad people from doing bad things? Government would be bankrupt in a day. At some point we should just dump felons on an island and let them fend for themselves with regular supply drops.

There are some departments that are putting in the work and others that are clearly not. That is all I’ve got to say. It’s disheartening.
