Thankful For Logic

  • Three local mayors would like to increase your property tax faster than state law allows because “limits on how fast tax bills can increase relative to property values are hindering recovery from the recession.” Really!?! For who!?! [RJ]
  • Suspended Family Court Judge Steven Jones is making more efforts to move the scheduled hearing before the Commission on Judicial Discipline from next month to some time after the election filing deadline in January. The concern voiced by his attorney, Jim Jimmerson, is that if the commission wrongly proceeds with the hearing, the commission would have the ability to bar Jones from running for reelection. Isn’t that a possibility if they rightly proceed as well? The commission’s special counsel, Kathleen Paustian, said the commission has to move forward “so as not to impact the reputation of the judiciary and public confidence in the judiciary and the commission.” Nice thought, but we may have passed that point a year ago. [RJ]
  • According to Jon Ralston, attorney/assemblywoman @LucyFlores has a national pollster checking on her chances as a potential candidate for lieutenant governor. Flores made national headlines earlier this year with her impassioned pleas for sex education reform. [Ralston Reports]

Finally, as most of you know, next week is Thanksgiving. For a number of reasons, local food banks are facing shortages with more requests for food and less available to give out to those in need. We encourage you to take those feelings of gratitude you’ve been expressing of late on Facebook and put them to action. Please consider helping those in need by donating food and/or money to local charities/food banks.

Let's be honest. Jones knows that the longer he delays his hearing, the more paid vacation he gets at like $160K a year. This is purely financial for him IMHO.

How about the City of Las Vegas simply shutters the Muni Court and gets rid of all the useless dead-weight employees "working" there? I mean really, is that "court" necessary?

Just that would provide enough savings that property taxes could actually be reduced.

Re: Doug Smith Recusal

Since I missed a chance to comment on this thread awhile back, I'll just make a comment here to show that there was merit to my earlier comment that Smith was potentially biased when it came to Mormon lawyers/parties. Enough said…

Oh thank you! We were all sitting around waiting to hear you tell us that there was merit in your own anonymous comment. We can now go on saving the world with our wonderful lawyering skills.

"…my earlier comment that Smith was potentially biased when it came to Mormon lawyers/parties."

Such a stupid comment. So Mormon lawyers can't appear in front of Mormon judges without the existence of bias? I'll be honest, as a Mormon lawyer, I'm not even sure who all the Mormon judges are. Maybe I would have a better idea if I attended our biennial meetings at the Meadows with the Bench, the Gettys, the Rothchilds, the Queen and Colonel Sanders (before he went tits up).

Anyway, 9:38, the issue wasn't that Smith & Hutchison were both LDS, it was that Hutchison is in the Stake Presidency in the same stake that Smith is a counselor in a ward bishopric. For those unfamiliar with LDS governance, Hutchison is one of three men who oversee all the LDS congregations in Summerlin, while Smith is one of three men that oversee a summerlin congregation. In simple terms, the issue was whether there was the potential for bias where Smith served in a subordinate leadership position to Hutchison within the LDS Church. Though Smith wouldn't have been directly subordinate to Hutchison, and I don't think there is any actual bias or prejudice, it is probably better that the two aren't in the case together anymore. This circumstance, where a judge is directly subordinate to a lawyer in Church callings is going to be extremely rare, especially given that there are around 25 stakes and 200 congregations in Las Vegas.

Vegas is probably 10% Mormon and the bar a much higher percentage. The idea that a Mormon lawyer can't appear in front of a Mormon judge without prejudice is just plain stupid and I'm embarrassed for any attorney who thinks otherwise. This stupid idea is similar to pernicious conspiracy theories about Jews controlling various institutions and industries.

2:53, Eeww I hated the Colonel with his wee beady eyes and that smug look on his face "Ohhh you're going to buy my chicken." He puts an addictive substance in it to make you crave it fortnightly.

You forgot The Vatican.

Oh, brother. Lucy snuck into an heavily Democrat and Hispanic district after Mo Denis left for the Senate, rode the coattails of a few fellow Democrats in the Assembly, made no progress on any of her pet projects, made a few headlines, and now she thinks she's ready for the Lt. Governor position? She's never really against an opponent. The closet she came was her initial election where she was guaranteed a win by virtue of her last name.

The bill she sponsored allowing domestic violence victims to break their leases without penalty passed. Or do legislative accomplishments not count if they primarily benefit low-income women?

And the sex-ed bill might not have passed, but she got a hell of a lot of attention for it. Legislative changes aren't made in a day. They require a lot of work to get support on the ground and media attention. Lucy did that for the sex ed bill. We might not see results right away, but I don't think you can assume there's been no progress made.

Yep, because it takes so much preparation for a Hispanic Democrat to run in District 28. Mo carried that district by more than 75% of the vote in both of the two contested elections since 2004. The other times, the Republicans didn't bother fielding a candidate because the demographics are so heavily skewed. A dog could get elected there as long as he drank Cerveza and was a registered Democrat. That doesn't mean she has a snowball's chance at the Lt. Governorship, regardless of how many tears she shed during the sex-ed hearings.

Oooh, the "jealousy" claim. That's probably persuasive among 15 year old girls.

@10:59 just curious what exactly are the qualifications in your mind to be Lt. Governor? You do realize the position is primarily responsible for promotion of tourism in the state don't you? And how is her political background all that different from current Lt. Gov. Krolicki who prior to becoming LG was State Treasurer for four years and before that election doesn't really appear to have "connections" to Nevada http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Krolicki ?

So just to be clear, 10:59 and 5:55, she only got elected because she's Hispanic and Hispanic people are so dumb they'll vote for anybody with a Hispanic last name because they're too stupid and busy drinking beer to properly evaluate candidates. And she all she did in the legislature was cry to get her way because that's what bitches do because they're weak and girly. And now that I've spelled out all the casual racism and misogyny implied in your posts, we've established that you've got nothing more and we can end this thread.

"Properly evaluate candidates." I'm sorry, have you met the people we elect here in Nevada, assuming an election is even contested? She had only token Republican resistance in 2010, and nothing from the Democrat side. In 2012, no one bothered. Not much to evaluate there.

Now, to be fair, she is hardly alone in getting elected in a safe, easy district. Hell, getting people elected from safe, easy districts is what redistricting is all about. But getting elected when 67% of your district is Hispanic and Democrat is not at all the same as running for a contested statewide office.

And since her star essentially rose with her crying at the hearing, it's fair game.

@10:14, did you miss the eight years or so he worked as the Chief Deputy State Treasurer while serving on the Douglas County Planning Commission before he ran for Treasurer? Krolicki has plenty of Nevada connections.

And considering the possibility that Sandoval may leave mid-term to run against Reid, some qualifications are definitely in order here.

I can't do it. I went to their weird vampire-inspired "Christmas Party" a few years ago, and I was just confused. I mean what the hell?! I thought it was supposed to be a Christmas Party and they were all dressed like vampires! The mashed potatoes were even dyed red. I give them a A+ for effort, and I appreciate the yearly invites, but I can't convince my wife to go back (especially not for the burlesque-themed party).

Their parties are always years behind times … Mad Men long after the show ran its course, vampire long long after the Twilight crap, and now burlesque three decades after the 90s burlesque revival. Maybe next year they can do a Shag ultra lounge theme complete with a martini bar and tiki statues

At least this year doesn't really require a "costume" like other years. The invitation says "club or cocktail attire." I know a girl who spent $75 on a mask last year for the masquerade ball.
