Great Expectations

  • Law

With only a week until Thanksgiving and 33 days until Christmas, one thing is (un)certain for many lawyers this time of year: BONUSES! Although some of you may have already found out what kind of bonus you’re getting this year, for many of us, that day is just around the corner and the anticipation is nearly unbearable. Here’s your chance to weigh in with your expectations about what kind of Christmas you may be having this year. We’ll check back later and see if your expectations were truly great.

What are your expectations with regard to a bonus this year?

I'm kinda surprised by how many people already expect no bonus. Why is that? Mean boss, didn't hit billables, etc?

Greedy bosses need to make their luxury car payments. When your bosses don't even pay 100% of health insurance for associates, don't reimburse for mileage, and require you to personally pay for a smart phone and data plan so you can have 24/7 access to work emails, expecting a Christmas bonus is a little silly.

I suppose they're being cautiously pessimistic. It is better to expect no bonus and get one than vice versa.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! There is the door. You have a better mousetrap? Go build it. You have such a bad relationship with your boss that your boss does not think you merit a pat on the head? Do something about it. Have not shown your boss(es) the amount of money they will lose if you leave? Do something about it. Think the headhunters are banging down your door because you are so special? Show your value.

With that said, our firm is paying bonuses at Year's End because we had a pretty decent year but are aware that not every firm had a bang-up year.

Harsh, but accurate.

As an associate I hate to say it but I agree with this. I didn't think a key part of my old firm's bonus formula was fair, so I got a job with terms that are more agreeable. Your firm might be a crappy employer, but your complaints sound petty. Hardly any employers – law firms or any other type of employer – pay 100% of health insurance for employees. And whether or not your firm required it, wouldn't you have a smart phone with a data plan anyway?
