According to 8NewsNow, the jury has reached a verdict in the punitive damages phase of the Health Plan of Nevada hepatitis C trial. Unfortunately for Robert Eglet, he only managed to get 1/5 of the punitive damages he sought. The very kind and generous jury awarded the 3 plaintiffs $270 million in punitive damages from HPN and $230 million from Sierra Health Care for a grand total of $500 MILLION DOLLARS.

Aren't SHS and HPN related entities? This number is still whack. The actual damages awarded only was a sufficient deterrent to future misconduct.
Some new attorney named Ryan Helmick, the new Pink House attorney/slave (illegally partnering up with non-lawyer owner) was arrested for attempting to bring a gun into the Courthouse today. Channel 8 called him prominent. Right!!! He has been licensed in Nevada for about 5 months and he went to George Jefferson school of law in San Diego, the Harvard of the beach ranked about 4000th by U.S. News and World Reprt. When will the Bar step in and close down this sham and embarrasment? Step up Dave Clark.

I take offense at this slight, sir! I'll have you know that the education at George Jefferson is first rate. If it wasn't, how could they cause their students to incur an AVERAGE of 168k to obtain said education?

As to Robert Eglet, he is the mucking fan. If I were Robert Eglet, as soon as the appeals were resolved, I would be DONE. I would sleep in till noon and live a purely hedonistic life for the remainder of my mortal probation.

MD's are required to obtain licenses from the state. They are required to be board certified and they are required to take continuing medical education for their various licenses and certifications. Even so, there are great doctors and there are mediocre doctors – half of the doctors practicing medicine today graduated in the lower 50% of their class. But insurance companies over the past 20 years have stepped in and required doctors to go thru credentialling to be part of their panels. Up until a few years ago, they charged money for this. It costs docs a lot of money just to hire credentialling experts. Then the insurance company decides what the doctor can and can't do(oh, I'm sorry, that's right – the doctor can do anything he/she thinks is medically appropriate – he/she just might not get PAID for it). It is about time that the insurance companies take some responsibility for bad outcomes since they are so intrusive in a physician practice. I say HPN/Southwest Medical got exactly what should be coming to a lot of companies

Expect your health insurer's list of providers to get a lot skinnier. We have lot's of bad doctors in Las Vegas. With this verdict as precedent, you'll no longer need to sue your doctor if you're a victim of medical malpractice. Now you can skip the middlemen and go straight after your health insurance company. No more in-network providers from Mexican medical schools!

If Helmick was flagrantly engaged in the unauthorized practice of law prior to admission, how the hell did he get passed Character & Fitness?
C&F in Nevada is serious. I had a FORMAL hearing for a high number of traffic tickets (none worse than regular speeding) in a period several years before my admission, even though I had only received ONE traffic ticket in the intervening years. C&F is thorough and serious. I don't get it. If my traffic tickets were such a big deal, how does Helmick not run into C&F problems?

Hey I just got word of this Richard Harris party. I've only ever been to the Craig Kenny version. Anyone know how they compare?
The Kenny party is like a frat house beer bash. It's entertaining to watch the paunchy old guys try and talk to the UNLV cheerleaders. I recall that one year there was even an alcohol-fueled brawl. The Harris party is a bit more grown-up and subdued. Depends on what you like.
Not entirely accurate 8:52. CPK party is very nice and classy from 5-8. Good food, beer and cheap wine and usually a good band. After 8 it becomes more of a kegger. One little tussle in about 18 years hardly makes it a drunken frat party brawl. The description of older paunchy Esquires trying to hit on everything that walks by is more accurate.
