Dressing For Success

  • Law

To best serve all elements of our readership, today’s post is dedicated to clothing. Here’s your chance to discuss your opinions on what does and does not qualifying as “dressing for success.” Specifically, we want to know your thoughts on appropriate office attire versus appropriate courtroom attire. Are they the same? Are they different–if so, how? Does your office have a dress code? Is it enforced? Do you wear jeans to work on Casual Monday through Thursday as well as Friday? Should judges wear black robes, blue robes, or green robes? Is it appropriate for them to wear sneakers with their robes? Any tips on where to shop?

Judge Delaney's green robe is ridiculous. I think they should all wear black robes.

I have seen this girl in discovery over and over again wearing skirts that are WAAYYY too short and tight. She's a younger attorney, so I'm surprised a higher up hasn't said anything. I cringe every time I see her.

I run a small office and we keep things a bit dressed up during the week. The staff wears professional attire except for Friday when they can wear jeans. If clients are coming in, I'll make sure I'm dressed like a lawyer. If I don't have any appointments, I don't have a problem dressing down (slacks and a button up shirt with no tie). For court hearings, I make sure I'm in a suit and tie.

What say you all to pantsuits vs. skirt and jacket for women attorneys? Dresses? (gasp!) Nylons?

I think nylons are archaic and unnecessary unless it's cold out. Pants or skirt is just a matter of preference, but if you're before old men judges, skirts are best.

I think Delaney should get a robe with small basset hound print all over it.

Uh, April 9, 2013 at 9:38 AM, you might want to let the rest of us enjoy the woman's revealing attire. For a man it's nice to see some skin. I think I saw her the other day, and it made my day.

In my office it's gym clothes or jeans and tshirts unless we have an appointment with a new client who might not get it.

In court it's only the finest clothes. Let the weak shop sales. Winners avoid Nordstrom two weeks a year: during sale time. That's when they unload the junk to schlepps.
