  • editor’s note to local reporters: It would be much appreciated if headlines about judicial races included the names and/or department number. Also, while we’re at it, it’s always good practice to include a case number and/or attorney names when reporting about a lawsuit.

Former ink-stained wretch here: The primary audience for local reporters is the general public. The general public doesn’t care about the case number or the department number. That’s “inside baseball” for most folks. Most folks don’t want the press to tell them how a clock works, they just want to know what time it is. Headlines have a limited character count and are supposed to be written in a way to draw the reader into the story.

The general public also doesn’t recognize or care about most names of attorneys or law firms – unless, perhaps, they are the names/faces they see on TV and billboards constantly.
