Women’s History Month

  • Law

It’s Women’s History Month and although we’re a week late for National Women’s Day, today’s post is dedicated to the women in the practice of law in Vegas. Although women outnumber men in law school and outpace men in joining top firms, many women end up leaving the industry as discussed in this post from National Law Review. Here, however, women are the majority on the bench–holding 40 of the 58 seats on the Eighth Judicial District Court bench. Women currently hold the roles of Chief Judge, and presiding judge for civil, criminal, and family courts. Women are also the majority on the Supreme Court of Nevada. It hasn’t always been that way though. It took a lot of persistence and effort breaking glass ceilings to get to this point. You have probably seen the name of Miriam Shearing when researching Nevada case law. When she joined the Nevada bar in 1969, she was just the 50th woman admitted to practice law in the state. In 1983, she was the first woman to become a district court judge in Nevada, followed by becoming the first women to be a Supreme Court Justice here when she was elected in 1992. Take a minute and go read about this modest woman of many firsts.

Dear Blogarinos: What is the current rule in state court for trial subpoenas? I want to subpoena a witness to physically appear in court and give testimony at a trial. Assuming there are no extenuating circumstances, can I compel physical appearance?

I believe that there was special dispensation required to do that previously (COVID rules) but that this is no longer the case. I think you still have to serve a notice of intent however.

Does anyone know anything about the current status of AB 286 or the Nevada Ghost Gun law? It is my understanding that a Lyon County judge has struck it down, meaning there is currently nothing prohibiting home manufacturing of firearms in Nevada.

Look. I am no feminist. But, there are so many females in the judiciary because the voters put them there. For whatever their good reasons or lack thereof. That said, pound for pound, there are as many shit male attorneys as female and that goes for judges as well.

I have been beaten by some awesome women attorneys over the years so your comment is complete nonsense. If you're going to post, please dampen your misogyny a touch and try being objective. As far as never using a female attorney, its clear that you never litigated against Betsy Gonzalez. Whatever your thoughts on her as a judge, she was one of the baddest ass litigators I have ever met.

I worked under her for a time in the 90s. I assume you are long in the tooth enough to remember that time and not some malcontent that she dressed down for not measuring up…legally speaking.

There are some really good women litigators in this town. And yeah Kris Pickering was really tough litigator. Betsy Gonzalez was a really organized and tough litigator and handled big cases and beat the boys. Kathy England was not the easiest to deal with but I dont know of another employee-side litigator in this town who I would want/have wanted. The bankruptcy and family bar are full of really top-notch women. If you cannot find really strong women in the legal field, you are not trying to see.

Comments from yesterday ae par for the course for this profession for women. Some of the worse perps are female judges to female attorneys, but it is tolerated. Ask around and read the records. That does not even address male attorneys who treat female attorneys like shit. I document everything.

Based on the sheer contempt shown by men I'd say the public got it right.

These men do NOT represent the majority. In most cases of this attitude, that I have experienced, its sub par attorneys / perennial candidates that consistently get chastened from the bench or beaten by better attorneys who happen to be female.

Most, not all men attorneys, I deal with are nasty and sexist. I prefer, for the most part, male judges. Few female judges I like: Delaney, Leavitt, and Navarro. Rest are bad.

I admire both men and women. Judges, attorneys, and those not working in the legal profession. I am not offended by the points of view expressed here. Stereotypes exist for a reason and people are free to associate with whom they choose to spend their time.

My unscientific observation is that there are more women than men in the legal profession.

I do not believe in bashing for bashing's sake.

Ann Morgan is a great person. She is a phenomenal litigator and mentor in regards to life and handling yourself as a professional.

Frankly if I were the BlogMaster here, I would welcome a secondary blog where people who do not want to discuss but who want to post things that would never pass muster here can go and blow off steam. It would divert those posters to another forum and would make for less management here.

Speaking of women dominating the bench. I am a middle aged male litigator who lost his hairstylist. I liked her because she could layer my hair so professionally that I felt this gave me an edge in the court room. I have burned through two disappointing replacement hair stylists. Any recommendations? I don't care about cost. Thank you.
