Red light cameras are useless and only serve to make politicians think “we’re doing something!” and pat themselves on the back while they sit back and watch the revenue flow in. Parasites.

Totally against red light cameras. They are bad. Study after study links them to unfair/disparate enforcement such as shortening yellow lights at the bottom of hills so they can get more “red light runners.” They’re also linked to worse collisions at intersections because people get scared of getting a ticket so they slam on their brakes at a yellow and get rear-ended. Studies have also linked them to municipalities shortening all yellow lights so they can get more tickets and increase their cashflow without significant expense. As per usual, anything Metro supports is bound to be bad for our community and bad for our safety.
This is all anti-camera/anti-government bullshit. I’m certain way more people get way more hurt/killed by people running red lights than people would by people actually stopping at red lights. The red light running is completely out of control in this city compared to other cities I travel to regularly. Something needs to change in LV, and this is a good start. They should do the same with the HOV lanes too, in my opinion. The only legitimate counter-argument I can see is that so many people in LV have no license plates, unless the police start enforcing registration laws, the only people getting these red-light tickets are people who actually pay for legit registration.
Wrong again. I’m just a parent who is looking for ways to try to make the roads (and sidewalks) safer in this town for me, my kids and the community in general, because the red light running is totally out of control here.
That’s a commendable goal, but you came out the gate making all kinds of assumptions. The fact that red light running is a problem AND that red light cameras are a problem are not mutually exclusive. It’s not antigovernmental/anti-camera. It’s factual. You can easily look up the studies that show that red light cameras are problematic. How does shortening yellow lights help stop red light running? It doesn’t. All it does is rake in more revenue for whoever is running the red light cameras. In addition to the issues mentioned above, check out the studies about red light cameras that are contracted out. They’re even more prone to abuse than the ones that are owned by municipalities. But yes, just mention the children and that makes your poorly argued position more righteous than the rest of us.
I didn’t see your suggestion on how to address the problem. That’s because you don’t have one. All you do is sit there and shrug your shoulders and say things like “As per usual, anything Metro supports is bound to be bad for our community and bad for our safety” which is t helpful in the least. Unlike you, I refuse to accept that it simply “is what it is”.
Oh yeah, and your “red light cameras make us less safe” argument is pretty much bullshit.
When it comes to crash reductions, an IIHS study comparing large cities with red light safety cameras to those without found the devices reduced the fatal red light running crash rate by 21% and the rate of all types of fatal crashes at signalized intersections by 14% (Hu & Cicchino, 2017).
. . .
Point being, red light cameras are not a panacea. Rather than looking at other, more effective answers, Metro advocates for the option that adds to their already inflated budget. Metro has made no consideration for driver safety. Metro just wants those sweet, sweet camera dollars. I’ll stand by my position that Metro is bad for our community. They don’t prevent crime and they sure as hell don’t solve crime.
Average annual per capita rates of all fatal crashes at signalized intersections for the control group cities were almost always lower than the cities with camera enforcement between ’92 and ’14. Also, the definition of “red light running crashes” is incredibly broad. And the study didn’t even take into consideration the number of cameras and the number of signalized intersections.
Go ahead and read the study instead of parroting bullshit and copying the first excerpt that confirms your already-established bias.
I’d reckon that a majority of fatal crashes in this city don’t even occur at intersections.
If red light cameras are allowed, then couple with a minimum time for yellows, e.g. five seconds or whatever is considered normal. Otherwise you aren’t allowed to have a camera at that particular intersection.
The lights are not programmed and timed properly. Have a left turn light in my neighborhood that sometimes does not change or takes forever. The Cities and the Counties do not run the lights correctly. Have had too many cases where both parties claimed they had the light or turn signal. Even backed up by witnesses. Happens more than you would think.
I’m really torn on red-light cameras. On one hand, I fully expect them to be programmed in such a way to maximize revenue rather than safety. On the other hand I’m a big believer in measures that reduce police interactions with drivers.
If I run a red light, send me a ticket. I don’t need to talk to a cop about it.
I mean, if somehow those cameras when triggered by a high speed or repeat offender do something in the immediate timeframe to cause a response to catch the butthole all it will do is move a few percentages on some charts used to justify outsourcing police work.
The people you want to stop with those things won’t be stopped. What now nobody pulls you over?
They have combination speed and red light cameras in Oregon. I got clipped last March for 6mph over and paid $165. I was furious. When I returned in June and again in August, I was much more careful in the area.
I hate the cameras and the big brother of them and will oppose anything about them that I can.
Saving lives, generating revenue and all that blah blah blah, is superfluous at best. But, no one can say with a straight face that its not going to be a deterrent.
Sounds like the Feds have a direct trace of funds from Lombardo’s campaign to Fiore’s PAC to her daughter’s account to a cashier’s check to her landlord.
Is Fiore a Scientologist?
Sounds like Fiore is probably toast. Good.
Boule bread.

Boot licker
red-light running main character.
I’m definitely the main character, but I don’t run red lights. You’re still a boot licker.

Anyways, see you and Metro next Tuesday.
You actually think Metro would get the camera dollars? I guess that’s why the rest of your arguments suck too.

Loooook up there…it’s the point, flying over your head. Good night, boot licker. Make sure to keep your crotch fruit off the streets.

What’s the word on Michael Sanft, Fiore’s attorney? Is he court-appointed?
Michael Sanft is a competent/good criminal defense attorney. I would imagine that Fiore is not indigent and Sanft is privately retained.
You can tell by his hair
Sounds like the Feds have a direct trace of funds from Lombardo’s campaign to Fiore’s PAC to her daughter’s account to a cashier’s check to her landlord.

I love that in that picture, Michelle is carrying a Birken bag worth more than twice the amount the governor donated for the statute.
Those were all legitimate expenses. Gotta spend money to get charitable donations.
Too funny.
Has anybody heard anything about Ed Bernstein selling his practice?
Want to find out about it? Call Ed. Enough said.
Heard a rumor of that about 30 days ago. No further word.
His employees don’t know.
