I can think of plenty attorneys who are like that.
Man, what a shit list of candidates for Judge Scann's seat. This is perhaps a good reason why a judicial appointment system would not make a real difference vs. the electoral system we have now.
Jacob Reynolds would be a good judge. Out of the attorneys I've dealt with on this list, he'd be my preference.
Second on Jacob Reynolds. Would be a good judge. His name pops on this otherwise weak list.
Sorry Hutch astroturfers. Reynolds may be a good guy, but look at his application. ONE (1) non-jury trial in the last five years. He has been practicing for 10, so basically he has had one trial in his career? I know this is not unusual in civil practice, but judges need to have this experience.
Plus his experience is overly political. Every attorney has the right to be political if they choose, but someone inclined towards the bench should be apolitical. You have to respect the office, and being someone who has overtly pushed for republican politics (his own consulting group, representation of Seaman etc.) means he will be tarred as a Republican hack and otherwise undermine the appearance of neutrality by the judiciary. For irony on this see his discussion on Judge Allf in his application.

Not a Hutch astroturfer (Whatever that is) and, admittedly, I haven't read all the applications, but Reynolds seems qualified (perhaps moreso than some current judges?)

Reynolds strikes me as someone who lacks the ability to understand what its like to practice law today. He has openly stated how he likes to seek sanctions against other parties and attorneys, even for relatively minor stuff that should be let go. I have a feeling he'd end up more on the Magistrate Judge Koppe end of the spectrum when it comes to the minutia than the Judge Cory end.
He's smart, he'd be well-prepared, but I think there are some significant negatives in his personality that may him a risky candidate for district court judge. This is coming from someone who knows him personally (I've never had a case with or against him).
I have always wondered why Reynolds came across as a sugared-up 12 year old. This "Marshmallow Mateys" story has answered the question once and for all.
I can confirm at least part of his story. I was in Merrill Hall the year after. We saw the Marshmellow Matey plaque, and took it as a personal challenge. We out-ate and out-raised him in 1998. Sadly, we did it without the assistance of the Malt-o-Meal corporation, who apparently felt that one cereal-eating fundraiser was all they would sponsor. Screw the plaque; we did it for glory.
I guess good for him for trying, but I read the application and there's no way that a dude that tried 1 non-jury trial in his life is the guy that should be made a trial judge.
And I say this as a 5th year big firm associate that has had all of my cases settled before trial.
Might be a good judge but he needs to lose the horrid comb over. For Lloyd George's sake, use Rogaine, bald spot paint, shave it off — just commit to something other than the comb over.
Median at BYU got you a federal clerkship in 2006? I have been scoffing at millennials a lot lately, but I guess olds really did have it easier.
You do not have to have lots of trial experience to be a good judge.

re 10:05, Reynolds got his clerkship because he worked with Richard Wilkins as a research assistant. Wilkins was wicked smart, and a nice guy, who performed in the annual Christmas Carol performance, but he also was on the far end of conservatism. He lectured in class about "Black Helicopters" coming to take people away. So, Reynolds, being a good guy and reasonably intelligent makes some good connections based upon his conservative bona fides. Its not a surprise that he leverages this into a clerkship.
That gives a little color, but I'm still very surprised. I clerked for a federal judge, and I saw the resumes that came in. We got hundreds of resumes from applicants ranked in the top 5% at BYU and BYU-level schools. And we got 5-10 calls from professors trying to pump their candidates. I recognize that different chambers are different, but where I clerked, a call could only help at the margins. It would never vault a median student above his summa or magna classmates.
Mark will need to practice not dropping the F-bomb on the record. His court reporter always seems to know when were aren't on the record….. IDK I think he would be ok on the bench.
He just tells his reporter to "clean that up for me…"

How many trials are there on Mark's resume? I'm pretty sure he can hold it together when he needs to. That's one thing that should be clear about Mark is that he's spent a lot of time in civil courtrooms. Anyone who can say the same should expect that from her/his judge. Not sure all of the other candidates together can match Mark in terms of number of cases that went to verdict.

Mark Gentile was already a finalist once. Has trial experience galore. Cannot in my right mind figure out how he could be a Judge. But he was a finalist. If they keep it female seat, Esther Rodriguez–cannot see it. The whole list is just a nightmare.
All of this talk about Jacob Hafter has made me think of one of our good buddies – Stephen Stubbs. Been a while since we have heard anything about him. Has he straightened up, or has he just not been outted?
You should check out his facebook page. He keeps it updated regularly with his antics. He's not shy about sharing his odd behavior and opinions. Remember, this is a guy who punched another student in law school (deserved it) and attacked another attorney's office staff with his cane. He's also a convicted "unlawful notarizer."

Gentile, hands down. The rest of this list, to the extent I'm familiar with any of them, is a horror show. I'm guessing Mark does more trials in a year than the rest of this group has in their collective careers. He's been on nothing sides, knows the rules but also how to cut through the BS.

I think we can do better than a guy that just had a DUI a few years back (Gentile). Plus, I'd rather have a bright judge on the bench than one that happens to try a lot of cases.
Why do I sense Jacob Reynolds will be a name we see running for every open judicial seat until he eventually wins? He left the practice of law to be a political consultant. He shouldn't be placed on the bench.
I wonder if Reynolds through in his hat because of his connection to Sandoval via Hutchinson and perhaps his political consulting business. Does he really want to be on the bench or is he trying to use the bench as a stepping stone into politics?
