Summer Hours

  • Law

Well, folks, it’s officially that time of year again where you can wear white without remorse and enjoy all the indoor activities that Las Vegas has to offer. Yes, it’s summer. School is wrapping up and there will be less traffic for a few brief months on your morning commute. What a wonderful time of year!

The best thing about summer is that it always kicks off with a 4 day work week thanks to Memorial Day. From there on out, it is a challenge to keep associates and staff focused on Friday afternoons (partners aren’t even in on Friday afternoon, natch). So, we want to know whether any of you have summer hours? Do you come in and leave earlier? Do you have an afternoon siesta? Free popsicles on Wednesday afternoons? Does your firm do anything to make the long hot summer more enjoyable?

I get in early and leave early (like 5a to 2p). Fridays are always a half day. I love this time of year. Flip flops are also part of the dress code.

Even though I have heard for many years that no coat is required in court during the summer, I could never even think of appearing in court without my suit coat on. It just wouldn't seem right. That said, walking to court between mid-May and mid-September while carrying a file and a suit coat, and wearing wool pants and a tie is one of the most miserable experiences I can imagine. Summer in Las Vegas is just plain hot.

Hanger that wool suit and get a lighter one or two. Its not that tough. Wear nice gaberdine slacks and a sport coat.

I hear that Hutchison & Steffen is taking the whole firm and their families to Wet 'n' Wild on Pioneer Day.

May 29, 2013 at 8:43 AM – Summer in Las Vegas is just plain hot. Summer in Vegas is hot? You think Vegas is hot? We laugh at your hot. We'll show you hot. Here in Laughlin we come to Vegas to cool off. At the height of the summer it routinely hits 125 degrees here. Wear the suit. Wienie.

May 29, 2013 at 2:45 PM – You confuse having an arrogant day with a bad day. This is just my arrogant, snobbish, condescending, "I'm better than everyone else" mode. It comes out whenever anyone fails to adequately worship the sacred vestments that are the Traditional American Business Suit.

Or when Las Vegans whine about the heat. Wienies.

Talking positively about getting to leave an hour early, not having to this or that on a Friday and all that other bull crap is the sign of an associate that hates his or her job. A partner who makes it rain and makes craploads of money and loves the crap out of doing it would never boast of getting to take a damn shortcut or getting this or that.

I love the crap out of what I do, I make sick money doing it and I could give a crap about leaving an hour early from having the fun that I have. I have nights and weekends to spend my money and do whatever I want.

It's all about attitute, folks. Starting thinking and acting like a partner and you won't have to have that stupid employee mentality where you get bossed around, work your tail off and hate work so much that you find so much pleasure in getting benefits at work.

It all starts with having the right attitute and making it happen for yourselves. No offense intended even though I sure I've offended plenty of people who are in dead-end legal jobs and hate going to work every day.

That comment was slightly crazy, but as a second-year associate, I found it to be very inspirational. I actually learned a lot from it and know what can be done. It gives me a good perspective. But that was definitely crazy. I seriously feel like I just learned more about what I'm supposed to be doing just from that comment than anyone else has ever taught me. Thank you. Seriously, thank you.

What is this 4 day work week of which you speak? All it meant was I didn't have an assistant to help out on Monday. I did get less phone calls though, which was nice.

Mix in some typical behavior from the Constable's Office with a little Mike Schaeffer behavior and you end up with some chuckles and creepiness.

May 29, 2013 at 5:12 PM – You speak truth. Attorneys need to think like owners, not employees.

Hey nerds, it seems like that girl that made the comment on 5/29 at 5:12 p.m. works at a sweet firm. I have to leave the two slampieces from last night at the pool here at my house to go in to the office for a few hours today to work on some BS. It seems like I'm working on a Saturday every three months, and I'm not even going to make $800K this year. I'm looking at my stats and I'll be lucky to hit $750K. Plus, all they gave me for my last quarterly bonus was $50K and the Hublot Big Bang Chronograph, when two years ago it was quarterlies of $75K and something like the Breitling Navitimer. I knew I've been getting screwed, especially in light of what the girl from 5/29 at 5:12 p.m. says about her firm.
