Love DC. Great city. But terrible for a bar conference. Its far, expensive and not really related. Also DC in June is not the best. Bar Conference should be in the state at least every third year, ideally every other. The rest should be a quick flight away. Phoenix, LA, San Diego, etc. Or somewhere with nice weather in June.

Arizona held its bar conference in Chandler, AZ this year. Utah holds multiple conferences each year with at least 1 or 2 being in Utah. Idaho’s conference was in Boise. California Lawyers Association hosted its annual meeting in San Jose. But God forbid the State Bar of Nevada support Nevada businesses and host its conference in the same state where its members practice & pay bar dues annually. I guess I don’t understand the rationale behind these “bougie” out-of-state retreats each year.

The selection of the annual conference location is a longstanding tradition tied to the incoming President’s right to choose the venue. This reflects the honor and responsibility of the role after years of dedicated service. It would be inherently unfair to restrict some Presidents to Nevada locations while allowing others the freedom to select prominent out-of-state cities. They’ve earned the privilege through their service to the Bar.

Additionally, past conferences held within Nevada saw low attendance, particularly from solo practitioners, despite efforts to accommodate them. Criticism of out-of-state conferences often comes from those overlooking the significant, often thankless, work the President and the Board of Governors perform on behalf of the legal community. Instead of complaining, members should recognize the sacrifices made by these volunteers and appreciate the opportunities the conference provides, regardless of location.

I would love to see a side by side comparison of attendance for the past conferences held in Nevada vs. attendance those held more recently in Sonoma, CA (2022), New York City (2023), and Santa Fe, NM (2024). Is that information available to the public?

12:23 PM here. The Bar, as you know, is a private organization and not under an obligation to provide the public with every statistic of every facet of its operation. Recent conferences have been a tremendous success and praised by all participants. These are the people who care to actually show up as opposed to those who endlessly and anonymously complain online.

Found this: “Nearly 300 attorneys, judges, and guests attended the 2024 Bar Conference, which took place at the
La Fonda hotel in scenic Santa Fe, New Mexico. Attendees included judiciary from Nevada’s justice and
district courts, as well as the Appellate Court and Supreme Court. Also in attendance were representatives
from Nevada’s statewide pro bono organizations.”

Hardly a ‘tremendous success’. (Source: https://nvbar.org/wp-content/uploads/NevadaLawyer_Aug2024_SantaFe-Bar-Conference.pdf)

How many attendees paid their own way versus getting a paid vacation?
I would suspect the majority don’t pay for themselves

As I understand it, the Board of Governors get stipends to attend which is not the full amount. I find it distressing that the Bar is promoting this “diversity” baloney by giving stipends to the affinity bars-specialized bars for members of certain race or ethnicity. But even those stipends don’t pay the full fare. Costs about $3 grand to attend a convention and stipends cover half,

Lets assume that all 300 were attorneys (clearly not the case, many attendees are vendors etc). That is 3% of attorneys in the state.

The judges and justices who attend have their way paid 100% including airfare hotel etc. by the state. So to the extent they are in the count, they aren’t paying for themselves, which should be subtracted from the head count of people who attend and pay to do so.

Take out bar staff, judges and “guests” and you have less than 75 attorneys that paid and attended, is my estimation.

Think about this. There are 10 appellate court judges, 58 EJDC District Court judges,30 Justice Court judges in Clark County and between LV, NLV and Henderson and 12 Muni Court judges in Clark County. Just considering those judges (who travel on the AOC and county budgets) would be 1/3 of the less than 300 attendees reported. Now add in Washoe judges, the Federal judiciary, the rural judiciary and the BoG, and one comes to understand that this conference is not a success.

“No obligation to provide the public…” lol! How about voluntarily providing information to dues-paying bar members who foot the bill for this stuff. Doesn’t seem like particularly sensitive information, the release of which would jeopardize national safety. Unless there is something to hide

@12:23 How’s that boot leather taste? The bar convention location is a little extra that Kim Farmer uses to solidify her support and keep her job and her grossly inflated salary. The year before the convention she takes the president and a few select members on a little vacay to scout the next location ahead of time. They get a free vacation and Kim builds her little army of supporters. Meanwhile we have one of the more expensive bar dues and one of the most aggressive OBCs in the country. I hate it here and I can’t wait to leave. If I could relocate today I would.

Guess what? All of those same arguments can be made about my HOA. Shall I start conducting meetings in the local steakhouse with meals provided as an earned privilege of my years of service as a board member? Or would that be an unacceptable case of self-dealing? You want to talk about sacrifice and thankless work? I’ll gladly go point for point with the poor Bar Presidents.

The constant whining really does wear thin. The State Bar is careful to select a venue and hotel each year that is affordable to everyone. If you are not at the convention, it’s for one reason and one reason only: it’s not a priority to you. Changing the venue won’t change the whiners priorities.

12:27 speaking. Yes, you “refuse” to attend. I don’t expect you to be honest with me, but please be honest with yourself. You are not the kind of person that would attend even if the conference were held down the street from your office. The only “animus” that takes the form of expression is on this anonymous blog from the same, loud 10 people year after year. There is work to be done in running the Bar. We thankfully have people who step up to do that work while the rest of you take it easy back here in Las Vegas.

If any portion of my bar dues goes towards subsidizing these carefully curated out-of-state retreats, it should be the State Bar’s priority to ensure those funds help the Nevada economy and Nevada businesses (where many of our neighbors, friends, family members, and clients work to make a living).

Government attorney here. My employer won’t pay for a state bar vacation and I can’t take the trip as a tax write-off. I would be happy to attend a conference in Las Vegas, especially in the CLE courses were interesting. I would love to see a breakdown of how many judges attend on the public dime, how many bar employees and governors attend with expenses paid by bar dues, how many attendees come from big law firms, and how many attend without someone else footing the bill.

Any year the conference doesn’t make enough with registration the president should have the honor of paying the difference. Sponsorships should not count because it should be a measure of actual member interest.

1. I am no fan of OBC, but you can’t have an elected official/attorney out there deleting evidence. This is not the first time he’s been accused. I don’t think he should be disbarred, but he should be suspended and resign from the County Commission.

2. The Badlands fuck up was a fuck up of Biblical proportions. I fear one negative consequence will be the pendulum swinging hard the other way in favor of developers. It’s also unfortunate that we all have to pay for this. The dumbass NIMBYs who pressured the City Council into this should be subjected to a special improvement district tax for at least a portion of this.

3. Rob killed German, at least in part, to keep his extramarital affair secret, presumably to save his marriage. And now his marriage is over. That whole story is a cautionary tale about how small indiscretions can quickly snowball out of control.

4. It feels like the bar conferences are made deliberately inaccessible to keep regular, rank-and-file attorneys like me away. Well, congrats guys. It’s worked again.

The pendulum swung in favor of developers long ago in this town and is stuck there. And good god the state’s takings jurisprudence is insane: how can there be no beneficial use of the land due to the regulations if it was a golf course? Seems like it could still be a golf course. And how was it “worth” over $600M+ when it can only be sold for $350? Also, Justin should not be disbarred or resign because of deleted text messages as a candidate with Sisolak an elected official. Was Sisolak subpoenaed? Justin’s platform was to stop the development; so they probably texted about that. But unless money changed hands, no adverse inference lends itself to any substantive misconduct. But it sure is fodder for bar counsel with an alternative political affiliation.

So Jones was not a party to the action, but a magistrate can throw out some findings against him. OBC can then use that to persecute a member of their political opposition? Not my area of expertise, but there seems to be some civil rights issues here. Going after politicians of the opposing party is some third world shit.

A big, pre-emptive FUCK YOU to anyone who doesn’t make scheduling accommodations for the rest of the month. I go out of my way to grant extensions and rearrange things this time of year. We’ve all dealt with people who not only don’t make those accommodations, but go out of their way to use Christmas and family time to gain an edge in litigation. To those people, are you are the absolute fucking worst. I have three names that I will always remember because of this who will never, ever get an accommodation from me. Of course, when I turn them down, it will be this way, “Larry (random name), as you know I go out of my way to grant professional courtesies, but unfortunately I cannot here because…..”

Time for the people of Montana to pass a ballot initiative to amend such vague language from its constitution.
