Yesterday a three judge panel at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that Nevada’s constitutional and statutory bans on gay marriage violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution meaning the State has to begin recognizing gay marriages. [RJ]
Clark County will begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses today at 2 pm. ed. US Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy issued an order temporarily staying the decision. [Las Vegas Sun] Then the race is on to be the first wedding chapel to legally perform a same-sex ceremony! [RJ]
The I-team confirms what we already know: the bulk of money raised by judicial candidates for elections comes from the lawyers practicing before them. What we didn’t know: $3.4 million so far this election cycle. [8NewsNow]
Here’s a nightmare–squatters staying in your vacant house and claiming they were scammed. [8NewsNow]
For all you party people out there: it’s that time of year again! The CPK party invite is below. Everyone is welcome. For you elitists, we hear there is a Judge Earl retirement party going on Friday night in direct competition to this party, but aren’t privy to the details…
Yes, Cycle Pub will be there from 8:30 – 10:30. There will be a queue set up for it near the back ally. Enjoy!

The real race is not which low rent wedding chapel thugs will host the first gay marriage, but which religious congregation will. My money's on the Unitarians…
Am I reading this wrong, or did the 9th circuit get caught trying to put too neat of a bow on gay marriage. It seems like they were consolidating two very parties (Passive Nevada with a fighting Idaho) under the Nevada case for one comprehensive ruling at the last minute. Seems unfair that they would use a case in which a key party has thrown in the towel as binding precedent while others were still actively litigating. Does not seem like Kennedy was too fond of the result either.
It was the early issuance of the mandate that Idaho sought to be recalled. Nevada isn't seeking anything so the stay was revised to only cover Idaho's case
Good thing the NV AG turned her back on Nevada Law to appease her cocktail party circuit pals. Idaho (great name, "I Da Ho") appears to have an "activist" AG who, like, defends the law, and stuff.

I don't really see the two parties as being in competition with each other. One starts at 5, the other starts at 7. So eat pizza, hit on 1Ls, get a little buzzed, then catch a ride to the other party, where you can eat some more, get even more plastered, make inappropriate remarks about the judge's spouse, inadvertently hit on someone you see frequently, and end the night on a career high.
That is brilliant. Succinctly sums up the shit show that will be friday night.

Judge Earl's party is at the residence of attorney Srilata Shah and cardiologist Dr. Kenneth Shah in MacDonald Ranch. Srilata is an attorney with the law firm of Lincoln, Gustafson & Cercos.
Dude, what the hell? While Sri didn't exactly try to keep the party under wraps, it doesn't mean than it's open to the legal community in the same sense as the CPK block party is.
Seriously, who cares? Is anyone actually going to go to Earl's party? I mean the guy only worked like half the year, so it's not like he will be missed (at least not for another 6 months until we remember he is not coming back)
At last count, a fuck-ton of sitting judges and Supremes. And I know looking forward to getting either Cliff Marcek or Bill Kephart in that chair, I already miss him.

Hey now – Judge Earl might not be as sharp as he once was, but cut the guy a break – he has some pretty serious medical issues. Don't discredit his decades of success both in practice and on the bench.

I'm with 9:27 a.m. He doesn't always get it right but at least Judge Earl cares. And the guy did actually work even when he was barely keeping himself and his now-deceased wife alive. I will miss him on the bench as will most based upon his ratings.

I feel like everyone who isn't a law student at the CPK is pretending to have a good time while secretly loathing the event… and some of the law students, too. Does it REALLY need to keep happening annually?
Cycle Pub a new edition to the festivities at the CPK party. should be fun.

Scotusblog has a post on why the stay requested by Idaho is affecting Nevada. http://www.scotusblog.com/2014/10/same-sex-marriages-in-nevada-maybe-yes-maybe-no/

Kennedy revised his order. Feel free to get gay married in NV this afternoon! http://www.scotusblog.com/2014/10/same-sex-marriages-in-nevada-maybe-yes-maybe-no/
