RIP Mitch. He worked hard to make himself a better lawyer and man. And in doing so, he helped countless others.

For whatever reason, depression and addiction take a heavy toll on our profession. Maybe it has something to do with the stress of the work. Maybe it's a byproduct of the hypercompetitive character of the people drawn to the work.
Much of the good work Mitch did for others lawyers was quiet, confidential, and will never be published on these boards. But our profession owes him a debt of gratitude.
Mitch once told me that his work helping lawyers suffering from alcoholism and addiction was merely his attempt to give back for the help he received from Coe and the other people who were there to help when Mitch himself needed help.
Notwithstanding his decades of success as a lawyer, Mitch became a very humble man. We are unlikely to see someone like him again.
Mitch was truly a gem. However may I suggest that there are very successful, good people in our community now. Maybe we should recognize those members of our community while they are alive instead of waiting for them to be gone.
10:42 is right, which is part of why I hate the anonymous personal attacks (by name) in the comments of this blog. A well-placed, sincere compliment to a colleague can really make somebody's day. On a couple of instances I have received an email from a colleague who saw my oral argument and wrote to say that I did a good job. It made me feel great and reflects on the kind of people they are. There's already too much corrosiveness in this profession. If you want to really show that you're a big shot, pay a sincere, unsolicited compliment. I promise it will never be forgotten.
Agree with 10:42 and 11:48. Which is why when you see anonymous hit pieces on here, stand up for the good guys (and gals).
Mitch always had a smile and a complement. Thinking of him always reminded me that I need to be a better person.
One time I was at the old courthouse with Mitch and he knew the names of everyone including guys doing maintenance. It stuck with me what a good, kind person he was.
Anyone know when our Eighth Judicial District Court website will be available?
Decent people, I like Judge Barker. Always nice and respectful to attorneys. Rarity.
I always had good relationships with Jerry Wiese when he practiced. James Howard of the Howard Law Firm is another attorney who it is hard to find disagreeable.
David Stephens is an attorney who I have never had or heard a cross word with. When I first joined the profession and encountered him, I wondered who would hire an attorney who was this nice and professional.
In my observation as a still somewhat young 6th year, the very best attorneys aren't dicks, in part, because their skills are so good that they don't have to be. Of course there are outliers, but generally, attorneys who make things personal generally do so because they lack sufficient acumen to obtain good cases, come up with a sound strategy and then carry that strategy out.
This is also true of attorneys who make a habit of bad mouthing other practitioners. It's the equivalent of a redneck who has a small penis and buys a large pickup truck

Interesting because I remember that Karen had a working relationship with Mitch, which shows that sometimes the apple not only falls far from the tree but rolls a good distance away.
Karen Ross is solidly lawyer hot.
I used to work for a PI firm (4-5 attorneys). Now that I'm out, everyone I talk to tells me how much they hate the partners in that firm. It's such universal contempt and disrespect, from both sides (plaintiffs' and defendants' counsel). Makes me wonder how they manage to survive.
Not only was Mitch a great attorney and mentor, but he also was a wonderful person with such a caring and genuine soul. Humble guy…It didn't matter if you were a no name attorney or a top trial attorney, if you needed his help/guidance, he was there with an open ear willing to help. For an attorney to have set aside time from their own private practice to assist other troubled attorneys speaks volumes and I'm sure to some he was a hero who helped steer them in the right direction. He will certainly be missed and I'm sure his legacy will never be forgotten. RIP J. Mitch Cobeaga. 4/24/17.
