One of you brought up the topic of using the Pomodoros technique to get focused on work. Seeing as how it’s the end of the month and time for billing to be turned in, any tips on making that process easier? Have you found a way to accurately bill as you go? Do you save it all for the last day? What do you when had a bad month and didn’t track it as you went or keep good notes–how do you figure out your time?
I like the app Focus Keeper(ios) for pomodoro. I started using it a couple of weeks ago and it's been helpful

Entertain me on this boring day. Tell me salacious innuendo and rumors about our legal community.
PS: NO DAD JOKES (These I reserve unto myself to torture my kids)
@1:27, When I was still in law school, female attorneys warned me about him. I've had to dodge a few of his boob squishing front hug attempts in later years so I was glad for the warning.
Speaking of mammary squishing, I was going to sign up for the Meet Your Judges Mixer but it's being held at a venue that requires shots. Deeply offensive. When did my medical status relegate me to the back of the bus?
I was there for my sister's swearing in. Why is Mike Cherry? Retire buddy. Stop. We know you have your favorites on the bench, and who you campaigned for on the Nevada Supreme Court, but you creep still.
I don't know Justice Cherry personally, but I was sad when he retired. I thought he was the Justice that best exemplified showing everyone respect from the bench. He seemed to be both approachable and wicked smart. He's doing settlement conferences now with the retired senior judges program. I had a mediation with him a few weeks ago and he did a great job resolving a case with some fairly insufferable litigants. Glad he is still serving the legal community.
I used to respect Mike a great deal, and he certainly had a storied career in the Nevada legal community. However is mark diminishes the higher in power that he became. Special Master for the MGM Fire was groundbreaking. He was only moderately effective as one of the first 3 CD Judges (Allan Earl was the most effective). And on the NSC he left no legacy and showed himself to be a spineless pawn.
When there were ADKT hearings he would raise legitimate questions about systemic problems and then would follow the herd. Read the decisions of the Court and see how often he bucked Hardesty's bullying. HINT: He never did. He was one of the most affable members of the Court but that did not make him a good jurist. He talked respect but rarely stood up for it. (I am not commenting on whether he hugged too long because he never hugged me). Pickering on the other hand is prickly by appearance but actually stands up for what is right and just and the law.

I keep getting this spam from recruiters; anyone know the firm:
National law firm’s growing and dynamic litigation practice has an opportunity for a highly- driven Commercial Litigation Associate with a minimum of two years of civil litigation experience to join our Las Vegas, NV office.
Qualified candidates will have a minimum of two years of general civil litigation experience, including experience defending commercial disputes, personal injury lawsuits, and premises liability actions in State Court, and will have the ability to manage cases from inception through trial, including preparation of pleadings, motions, and briefs, managing discovery, preparing for depositions, and conducting legal research, analysis, and writing. Experience with Federal Court is a plus, but not required. Candidates will be proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and e-discovery platforms, have excellent writing, research, negotiation, and communication skills, and be able to handle multiple priorities in a timely and professional manner. NV Bar admission is required. CA Bar admission is a plus.
Never heard of them. This guy blows me up every time Lewis Brisbois and other insurance defense hell holes are looking to hire, so I assume Messner sucks.
Fair point. I assume with low billable rates comes low salaries and/or extremely high billable hours. And I assume that insurance defense is soul crushing. I've never met anyone in insurance defense that seems happy with the job. But in fairness, perhaps Brisbois is a magic unicorn because I don't know either.
I am sure Lewis Brisbois is the same as Messner, same as Wilson Elser, same as Bremer, Thorndall, etc. All insurance defense firms are about the same. I have had cases against folks at Lewis, and they seem fairly competent. I think they also do pretty much all work comp defense in town.
Thanks, 8:21. I appreciate it. Maybe my question was bad. I was hoping to get intel on the culture, are the folks nice to work with, are the billing expectations realistic, those types of things.
@1:22. It really depends on what group you get into I think. The cases are really interesting and they have some really big clients. You get a ton of experience. The bad thing would be that the case load is often way too high and there are not enough attorneys for the work. The turnover is about the same as other ID firms. It's better culture than a lot of other ID firms and I believe the pay/bonuses are higher also.

Has anyone actually used this word in a sentence before?
I received a solicitation today from a Canadian law firm that reached out to me to assist their client recover the proceeds from an $11m unclaimed estate here. My qualifications? Same last name as the decedent. Did the Nigerian princes move to Canada?

I had relations with your wife and dog.
Dad?!
Mike Cherry was creepy at swearing in yesterday. It was also a little brave New world with Nevada Supreme Court high up. Weird being there
Married managing partner hooked up with associate. Not sure how true tho.

9:17 — Creepy YOU are . . .

Messner Reeves
Never heard of them. This guy blows me up every time Lewis Brisbois and other insurance defense hell holes are looking to hire, so I assume Messner sucks.
What is the culture like at Lewis Brisbois? Someone recently asked me about that firm but I didn't have a lot of insight.
Fair point. I assume with low billable rates comes low salaries and/or extremely high billable hours. And I assume that insurance defense is soul crushing. I've never met anyone in insurance defense that seems happy with the job. But in fairness, perhaps Brisbois is a magic unicorn because I don't know either.
I would never work at Lewis Brisbois. That's all I can think to say. Should communicate plenty lol.
It communicates nothing, actually.
Exactly what a soulless Lewis Brisbois drone would say.

They start their first years at $70K a year.

This blog is so boring today that I am bringing back …. wait for it … "taint"
Has anyone actually used this word in a sentence before?
I used it in court once on a dare. I said "taint" instead of "aint" in a fake pseudo-Texas accent. I got a smirk and a side eye from Michelle Leavitt.
I have used "taint" quite often as in besmirched or spoiled. Not in the snickery way that I presume you were asking however.
I just got off a client phone call and the other lawyer on the call just used the word taint.
'taint that big of a community we got here
Used it today: "Ya taint?"
"That makes my taint hurt"
hahahaha OP 2:11 here – I actually laughed out loud – with those mic-drops of 2:52 and 2:52 I'm officially retiring "taint"
Happy to oblige.
