We cut the cord 4 years ago, and haven't looked back. Between OTA channels (thanks Mr. Antenna); Apple TV; and Hulu its been a great. Although the College football is a bit of a drag … I've had to do some creative workarounds. I tried to buy College football games but was advised I have to subscribe to cable … so now I am forced to watch the games for free. I predict in the next several months that too will be offered to web-only subscribers. http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/outkick-the-coverage/espn-has-lost-7-million-subscribers-the-past-two-years-112515
Don't forget SlingTV and Netflix. SlingTV is $20 and includes ESPN and WATCHESPN and you can cancel at anytime so it's a good solution for some college football.
With all the a la carte options online for TV now, only suckers pay for cable/satellite. In our house, we use OTA, Netflix and pay a little every month for online HBO and ESPN. That's all you really need. Once people cut the chord, they almost never go back. For that reason, Cox is in an inferior position in this showdown with Ch. 8 and has a lot more to lose. Cable companies screwed consumers for decades, I have to admit that I'm enjoying watching them begin to crumble.
You still need internet from somewhere though, so I still have Cox. Recently called to increase my internet speed and for $7 more a month they're giving me a cablebox for local channels as well as HBO, Starz and Encore. If they try to jack it up at end of the year, I'll cut them again, but for now enjoying it.
Question for the people using antennas – I have rabbit ears and can usually get 3 of 4 channels to work well, but I can never get 4 synced and there are times where I lose the picture quality for no apparent reason. Is Mr. Antenna worth it? Any other recommendations?
Mr. Antenna is the Cox Cable of cord cutting. Why pay for something that you can install for free yourself? Go buy a Leaf type antenna, one of the flat one's that is about the size of a piece of paper, plug it in to your tv. Lay it flat, do a channel scan, hold it upright, do the scan one more time, and mount on wall. Presto, your antenna is installed and you have all the local channels in HD for free (well, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox in pure free HD).
I've done a comparison on the antenna and Cox, and there is literally no difference in the picture, just the price.
I can't believe anyone would pay for installing an antenna…crazy…
You may need a small directional antenna (and it's what Mr. Antenna would install anyway). Pretty much all of the broadcast towers in town are on Black Mtn. (SE) with alternate towers over on Mt. Potosi (SW).
indoor antennas did not work in our house. at all. So Mr. Antenna put one on our roof and the picture is actually better than Cox — which downgrades the 1080p transmission. I'm handy enough, but I decided to let Mr. Antenna install the thing two stories up.
I picked up a Winegard Flatwave Amped antenna from Costco and it works great. Just try different positions, find the best one and stick it to the wall with command strips. You can even hide it behind a picture or bookcase or something if you need to. For dvr, you can get a Tivo roamio or a Tablo and record over the air shows. It's incredibly simple.
1. Little Square Antenna on Amazon for $30…just plug it in and stick on a window. You can watch all the John Ralston you want.
2. Netflix
3. Amazon Prime and get free 2 day delivery at no extra charge
4. Cox VERY HIGH SPEED 100 MPS for $70/ month…no buffer, high speed games
5. Hulu
a) that only works for one t.v. With the rooftop, it ties into your coax, so all your tv's pull in the signal;
b) the square only works if your window faces the transmission towers;
c) you have black squares on your windows.

I've been off regular cable for about four years, too. We get DirecTV during football season for Sunday Ticket and leave it off the rest of the year.
I was under the impression, apparently false, that Cox was required under FCC rules to carry local stations. Maybe that doesn't apply anymore since we have actual options?

"Maybe they need a good lawyer." They need Trump, he knows how to negotiate from a position of strength.
Seriously though, can we talk about Trump for just a minute? Or at least his supporters? Trump is a pretty smart guy. His supporters? Not so much. I am normally reluctant to chalk up differences of political opinion to intelligence, but this is a rare exception. These people are just plain stupid, and that's not hyperbole. Trump is manipulating what he knows is a group that lacks the basic critical thinking skills that you and I take for granted when we wake up in the morning. These people pose a real threat to democracy.
Great, another liberal who thinks they are smarter than everyone else. This time, you can't call the Republican candidate stupid (like you did to George W. Bush), so now its the candidate followers who get belittled.
The cry of "You think voters are stupid" is some kind of logical fallacy that I don't care enough about looking educated enough to go look up.
The simple fact of the matter is that some people are smarter than others and that some seek out knowledge about issues and options more aggressively than others, and that neither of these has an impact on their ability to participate in the process. In truth it probably doesn't have much of an impact on the quality of outcomes.
As a base principle, though, I think that any system that lets tin-foil-hatted 9/11 conspiracy truthers, people who think the planet is flat, people who believe that the planet is 6000 years old and people who don't know what money is or how it works the same amount of decision making power as I have is a system with the seeds of it's own destruction built in.
I wish that well into my fourth decade I could stop typing it's when I mean its. Fuck this stupid fucking language.

Mr Antenna was like $150 (I think). Rabbit ears simply did not work in our house. Even the fancy ones. Now we get the local channels that look great. We get a total of 40 or so channels. ME Tv rocks
$150 to Mr. Antenna sure beats the $800 Ambulance, $1200 E.R., $300 pain medication co-pays, etc, not including the 2-6 weeks of loss of earnings while your fractures heal… assuming you survive the fall of 2 stories
and don't forget the roofing company bill to repair the roof tiles you break trying to do the job which causes the roof leak next rain storm. Lets face it, they didn't build houses with clay roof tiles in the 1950's which are more fragile than the asphalt or wood shingles used then and as a general rule, the people walking on the roof have been should we say supersized since then.
Wow, you're like the softest human's out there, what do you do when you need to wipe your mouth, tinkle the crystal bell until Jeeves rushes in to relieve you of the fleck of fois gras that dared stray from your mouth onto your lips?
Who uses an antenna for tv? I feel like I am in bizzaro world. Is direct tv truly that expensive that you hang an antenna on your wall like it is the 70s. Holy shit.
Better question is: why the hell are you paying for DirecTV to give you black lines on the top and sides of what used to be HD broadcasts when you can get those same broadcasts in perfect HD for free?
Black lines? Never seen any black lines, but I also pay the bill. Where do you get HBO, FX and other stations for free? Enlighten us Republicans who keep paying bills.

I had Mr. Antenna come out. I simply don't own a two story extension ladder. He ran the wire into my cable junction outside, now I get the OTA stations in HD for free without rabbit ears inside. For me, I was paying over $120 per month for cable television, of which I watched maybe 2 hours a week (except for college football season). That is, I was paying $17.00 per hour for rather vapid entertainment. The bulk of my screen time was spent watching netflix or amazon prime. So I cut the cord. Frankly, I don't really care about network television — there is very little that I watch, but if the radio waves are out there, so I thought I might as well scoop them up.
I notice without cable I do not surf looking for something to watch. The kids and I have our shows, whole seasons at a time, through apple, amazon, or netflix. Basically we are paying for À la carte television.

I can't believe how many cheap/broke lawyers there are out there.
This is not a factor of being cheap/broke. Cordcutting is about not overpaying for crap channels you don't want or need. But I digress, that does not negate the fact that there are a lot of cheap/broke lawyers out there.

Sling is on sale if you have T-mobile by chance – a mere $14 a month now.
