What is Ford saying Snapchat did to harm “Nevada’s chidren”?

From the complaint:

And, much like an illegal drug, Snapchat has been designed to be an addiction
machine, targeting people under the age of 18 (“Young Users”) and more insidiously children under the age of 13 (“Youngest Users”) who, as Snap well knows, have developmentally limited capacity for self-control. Children are the most vulnerable to these intentionally addictive design elements. As one specialist in social media addiction notes, “[a]dolescence is second only to infancy when it comes to growth. Therefore, the impact of social media on a developing teen’s mind and body can be huge.”5 Social Media platforms like Snapchat, with design elements that intentionally keep children engaged for as long as possible—to the exclusion of all other activities—harm their users emotionally, developmentally, and physically. They lead to a condition known as “problematic internet use,”6 which is associated with a range of harms, including but not limited to exposure to predators and online bullies, age-inappropriate content, damage to children’s self-esteem, and increased risk of eating disorders and even suicide.

“the impact of social media on a developing teen’s mind and body can be huge”

So can the impact of lazy parenting, overmedication, unqualified teachers, disorganized schools, bad food, divorce, lack of exercise, single-parent households, and lax morality in the community. In other words, there are a multitude of alternative theories, each of which is at least as likely to explain how fucked up children are.

I hope Snapchat defends this ridiculous case. And I hope these are the last days of Ford’s political career.

typically causation is not decided on the pleadings, but if you were a good lawyer you would know that

Not the OP, but the OP’s reflection on the state of parental care and CCSD is on spot.

CCSD can work, but only if the parent is vigilent.

With the exception of magnet schools and a VERY SMALL number of regular schools, if you’re sending your kids to CCSD you are a bad parent. No amount of “vigilance” can make up for that.

Hogwash. The highest number of National Merit semifinalists are coming from CCSD schools, with one magnet program in particular. I refuse to pay $120,000 for private school so my kid can go to UNR. Private schools are just social clubs. The majority of kids who attend the Meadows end up at UNLV or UNR.

For Northerners, UNR is not the preferred nomenclature. University of Nevada, please.

Maybe. But many, maybe most, view public school as a way to park your kid for the day. Many do not teach their own kids respect for teachers or the value of education.

I’m both a good parent and a good lawyer. But being a good parent is far more important.

“divorce… single-parent households,” I’ll have to inform my kids that they should be much less high performing since they are from a divorced home and single-parent households.

Not necessarily a dealbreaker; but being from a broken home does correlate with troubled kids. It isn’t a perfect correlation by any means.

This attitude will help them be less high performing.

The DMV article states there are 416,000 “identity cards” issued in NV to presumably illegal immigrants. How is that even possible? We have a population of 3 million and hundreds of thousands of those are under 16. That would make undocumented a huge percentage of NV’s population

I think the underlying assumption is that only undocumented imigrants are getting these cards. Lawful resident immigrants are also eligible for those cards if they can’t qualify for a regular DL.

udge Connie Steinheimer has been removed from all of the cases assigned to her court following an administrative order issued today by Chief District Judge Egan Walker. Why?

Very sorry to hear this. He litigated a little too hard early in his career but turned out to be a pretty nice guy under the veneer.
