  • Nevada’s Attorney General, Catherine Cortez-Masto, filed a motion yesterday to withdraw the State’s brief in support of Nevada’s constitutional defense of marriage amendment. Through his office, former federal judge/present governor Brian Sandoval supported her actions and said the law “is no longer defensible in court.” [Las Vegas Sun; RJ]
  • Here’s a chicken or the egg type question–does Betsy choose the cases that create the headlines or do the case that create the headlines choose her. Either way, another Judge Gonzalez ruling made the news yesterday when she ruled that a jury should learn that a woman who is charged with attempted murder of her son, shot and killed her estranged husband 20 years ago. In an interesting twist, her son’s testimony at age 11 helped her get an acquittal with her self-defense claim back then. [RJ]

I recently saw a huge billboard for Jacob Hafter for Judge. Please please please do NOT vote for him. Thank heavens for peremptory challenges!

P.S. I am not running against him (or running at all). But, I have had cases against him, and IMHO he does not have the type of temperament and composure I think a judge should have.

Hafter is still suing the State Bar over the private reprimand that he turned "public" and the costs that the Bar incurred because he agreed to pay for the Northern Disciplinary Bar members to travel to Las Vegas and then reneged on payment. He is not who I want as a judge.

You'll be begging for Hafter if Bruce Gale's thousand year campaign finally succeeds…

Bruce Gale might be a little goofy but he will not be an imperious pseudo-intellectual like Hafter. Even without a robe, Hafter has black robe fever. I have never met an attorney that is as over-bearing and arrogant as him. And it is not sour grapes, as I have not encountered being on the losing end in any cases involving him. It is simply the way he conducts himself and acts. That is my humble opinion anyway, but ask anyone who has had to deal with him to verify.

I would quit the bar if Hafter was elected judge. He would be the absolute worst judge you could possibly imagine. He would be results-oriented like crazy.

I don't know Gale, is he that bad? Any stories you could share?

Could either of them really be that much worse that Judge Johnson?

Is Craig Friedberg going to mount a legitimate claim against Miley? Or is he only running against her so that he can avoid having to appear in front of her?

We certainly should hope that he's going to run a real campaign. There is no more brain-dead judge on the bench than Miley. Nor has there been one in the past twenty years. Will someone please post a link showing how we can lend support to this Friedberg fellow?

I hate to break it to you but Craig Friedberg isn't the answer to your prayers. Everyone I know who has worked with him or litigated against him says they are voting for Miley (some say they wish they could vote more than once).

Friedberg has no shot in hell. He is a joke. Miley is a much more suitable choice.

This is the reason why a judicial election system is so horrible. We end up having to decide what type of sausage to shove up our butts… metaphorically speaking.

He was opposing counsel on a case once. He's about the last person I would ever want as a judge.

His website says it all: tons of errors and when you click on the link "Judicial Philosophy" the page reads, "The page you were looking for was not found." Miley is not the greatest, but sometimes you take the devil you know over the devil you don't.

Hafter did both email and call me on April 13 after he found out that he was himself the subject of a bar inquiry (and NNB wrote a story about that here). At that time he said he believed I may have misquoted him and asked me to go back and check my notes. I informed Mr. Hafter that I had written the story from my notes to begin with, adding that I still clearly remembered what he had said, in part because I had been so interested in the news that there was an anonymous complaint that had, according to him, led to a pending bar inquiry into the conduct of the state Attorney General — and that he thought her actions rose to the level of a misdemeanor offense. However, I did re-check my notes after speaking with Hafter and was and am confident that what I wrote was accurate. – See more at: http://www.nevadanewsbureau.com/2010/04/26/the-curious-case-of-jacob-hafter/#sthash.eFsGWx8c.dpuf

I do not see how Hafter is arrogant. I have met him a few times and he is so down to earth, I felt like I've known him forever. I also love his care and concern for animals. He stood up and spoke for a rally against the killing of 56 % of animals at The Animal Foundation ( a very politically involved shelter.) I highly doubt he did it to get protesters votes, considering less than 200 people were there. I respect people who are running for office and still stand up for what they believe in, despite the possible negative outcomes due to the opposing sides connections. Most political figures hide behind a curtain or stand up for bs to get a vote. Well Hafter definitely has my vote.
