MLK, Jr. Day 2014

  • Law

This was going to include a poll question, but it’s not working for some reason. Instead, we’ll just open it up to your input in the comments.

What do you think about firms that remain open on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Observed) despite the fact that both state and federal courts are closed? Is it racist to be open or just insensitive? If you were in charge, what would your firm do on this January holiday?

There's nothing 'racist' or 'insensitive' about it – just like President's Day, President Washington's birthday, and Columbus day; Martin Luther King, Jr Day is not a real holiday.

agree – it's neither racist nor insensitive – just another perk for the public employee union members and another poke in the taxpayers' eye

I'm Irish. I think it's racist and insensitive for firms to be open on St. Patrick's day. I'm sure the Mexicans feel the same way about Cinco de Mayo.

You can rationalize being open on a holiday as a good way for everyone to get a lot of work done since hardly anyone else will be working so they won't be bothering your people with phone calls, emails or faxes. I didn't work yesterday, but checked in on my emails and I didn't get a single real email yesterday, so it would have been a lot of uninterrupted time had I gone to work.

I closed my office for the holiday but I still came in to get some work done. It's always more productive to come in on a day where I'm not distracted by a million different things.

I, for one, think it is inconsiderate and borderline racist. First of all, it's inconsiderate because it's a national holiday. The kids don't have school and requiring people to be at work puts a burden on them. I understand some people stay open on President's day and Columbus day, but if you take those off and not MLK day, then it's a little bit racist.

I've decided that it's only racist if you keep your office open on MLK day because you hate black people.

Judge Johnson making a nice pro-union ruling the week after she finds out she will be campaigning. What coincidence!
