Memorial Day Weekend 2024

  • Law

Time to fire up the BBQs and celebrate the start of summer! What are you doing this weekend? Staying home or hitting the road? Is your firm going to do summer hours this year? Perhaps a summer dress code? What else is going on out there?

Enjoy your weekend, but whatever you end up doing, be smart and don’t drink and drive.

LAWYERS CONCERNED FOR LAWYERS

Confidential help from a fellow lawyer is a phone call away

Toll Free: 866-828-0022

Any lawyer in need of confidential assistance with alcohol, drug, gambling problems, depression and stress: help is a phone call away. The LCL hotline will put you in touch with a peer who understands the issues of lawyers today. When you call, all you have to leave is your first name and telephone number, and someone with experience and who understands will call you back.  You will be listened to with understanding and support by someone who will give you resources you may not know exist out there. One new benefit of this program is three free therapist sessions for support during stressful events. More details here.

Told story here before. In late 90s I worked for firm. Tuesday after Memorial Day all told one of coworkers had both two small boys killed by drink driver over weekend. When he finally came back to work about month later his face looked survivor of Auschwitz. Please don’t drink and drive.

Isn’t this the week that study for the July Bar Exam traditionally begins in earnest?

It is not a new thing. Baby Leavitt is not a baby any longer. Nepotism has been around a long time.

You don’t necessarily want someone up there whose very first trial is one that they are presiding over. At least Rebecca has some courtroom experience. Nepo baby yes, but I think she will do fine.

Nepotism, by definition, cannot apply to a popular election.

Don’t be obtuse. You know of what we speak when referring to nepotism in the courts.

Actually, I have no idea. I find it exceedingly predictable that someone raised by two lawyers, one of whom was a judge, goes on to be a lawyer and run for judge. To me, nepotism is when you get hired by Mom or Dad into a job regardless of whether you’re actually qualified or not. Should subsequent generations be barred from being judges or politicians just because their parents were judges and politicians?

Nepotism is the fund raising, among other things.

Your definition of nepotism is ridiculously narrow.

Or yours is ridiculously broad. Maybe the word you’re looking for is “privileged”. Check Merriam-Webster and find out.

Regardless how much money this candidate raised, the real question is: which candidate will Emerge Nevada support in this race? If memory serves, Ellie Roohani enjoyed a fundraising advantage over her opponents during the last cycle but the Emerge Nevada-endorsed candidate won.

Was the candidate with more money a nepo baby? Did she have $340,000?

Much to the dismay of the rest of us. Now we wait 90 to 120 days for hearings in that department instead of 30.

Dear Justice Court of Las Vegas Township: I know this will come as no surprise but you are broken. When we upload an Order on May 1 and (a) you charge us $4.64 just to submit an Order to the Court and then (b) you do not even acknowledge receipt of the document in your electronic filing system for 24 more days and then (c) it is going to another 3 weeks for the department to actually read the Order that was submitted on May 1 such that (d) there is only a 50% chance that the department will actually sign it, your system is broken. Not to file a signed Order mind you. Months just for your Clerk of Court to acknowledge that the Order was uploaded and to have the order wind its way through the system only to be rejected. This is ridiculous. Do better.
