The shock she experienced when you essentially get impunity to say whatever you want without consequences because of your minority status and then you finally say something that costs you
Law firm did the right thing. As incredibly far as the line has moved for someone like her to say outrageous stuff, she still crossed the line. I mean, people can really talk some sh*t these days; but saying something like THAT?? In New York??
@11:26 – AOC knows who pays the bills. You don't survive as a law firm or a politician in New York ending up on the wrong side of these particular issues.
@5:42 that’s a disgusting, racist comment. If you actually paid attention to AOC’s policy positions instead of relying on the Murdoch family for your information, it is not a surprise that she spoke out against the terrorists. Stop being gross.

Imagine billing a public entity paralegal work at 225 an hour with a straight face.
So, all the work on the Writ of Mandamus appears to be trying to defend against behind-the-scenes decision-making and desperately trying to avoid turning over text messages and emails from individuals conducting public business using personal accounts, including the decision to change counsel. I'm sure the folks in Douglas County would be thrilled about that.

LACSN recently got 83k in payment from the State of Nevada under forensic mental health contempt orders per testimony in the Interim Finance Committee. Wow.

Anyone see that lawsuit filed against Steve D and his henchmen
Lol, according to him he "kicked the shit" out of Richard Harris, not once, but twice. I would love to hear about how that supposedly happened. And apparently, he's "not afraid" to do it again.
"So Richard, come for another shit kicking I see…. Well okay."
I am sure Will Kemp is not working on this case. You will notice the other attorneys at his firm and a second firm on the pleading. They are doing the work I am sure.
I need a case manager at my firm. Please send her resume over. thanks.

With regard to Gilbert, if the School District hired someone who actually knew what he was doing the fees would go down. There are only 5,300 students in the District. His costs alone are $36,000?

No paralegal in Nevada charges $225 per hour let alone $475. How can Gilbert keep a straight face?
You can charge whatever your clients will pay. I agree. The question comes down to fee shifting. The law requires it be commensurate with other practitioners, ie. It be reasonable.
6:17, you may want to look at NRPC 1.5(a) a little more closely: "A lawyer shall not make an agreement for, charge, or collect an unreasonable fee or an unreasonable amount for expenses."
$7,500 for the monthly retainer.
$16,731 dealing with a Writ of Mandamus
$24,897 preparing for and attending Board meetings
$10,627 for General Board Administration
$5,492.50 for Records Requests
$5,070 for Open Meeting Law complaint
$3,737 for "Employer-Employee Organizations" (in which his paralegal drafted everything and he spent 1.1 hours of non-billable time doing something). https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24004893-douglas-county-school-board-joey-gilbert-sept-21-invoices?responsive=1&title=1
There is one reason and one reason only that anyone gives a shit about this. It has been happening at every agency, local and state for decades that hires private counsel. Every Housing authority and school district in the State pays top dollar and then some for its outside services. Its no different than the DoD paying $400 for a hammer or a toilet seat.
The single reason is because its Gilbert. Period. Stop acting like anything matters beyond getting Gilbert and nailing him to the wall because he dared to be publicly against the machine. Now that he is profiting off of the machine that hates him, everybody has their panties in a twist.
Take your indignation and . . . well, you know what you can do with it.
Yeah as a Republican and someone who also pays taxes in Douglas County on a cabin, this billing and conduct is outrageous. Are people making a big deal of it because it is Gilbert? Sure but that might not be political as much as competence. He is not competent to do the work and then is gouging on top of it. This conservative cares more about saving money and hiring competent people than where the outside counsel to the School Board stands on whether Trump was actually the winner.
@12:23, I do think we should publicly scrutinize all outside counsel contracts for this kind of garbage. The public should be watching and demanding an accounting of where money is going. I looked up the Maupin contract and if they were charging a retainer and not reducing fees from it, they should refund that money as well.
1213 here.
Absolutely agree.
But for all these anonymous blog posters to act as though THIS is the final straw that broaches a serious change is kind of disingenuous.
So people should just shut up and just keep accepting it because he is a Republican, should shut up and keep accepting it because its done all the time everywhere? Great argument. But not at all what you said, 12:13.
I wouldn't say it's about Gilbert, at least it wasn't initially. The Board majority didn't like the advice they were getting on their transgender ban, so they fired them and looked for more friendly counsel willing to give them friendlier advice. Gilbert fit that bill.
While the true fiscal conservative would care about competence and billing rates, the issue about which led to the change in counsel has nothing to do with fiscal conservatism and a lot to do with the right's culture wars.
Hypocrisy? No, you projecting? Yup! Look what they did! This isn't about what he did, its about the hypocrisy of people not taking down Dems! Please. Stick to what is being discussed.
@2:40 that is what was being discussed. Just because you don't like their analysis doesn't mean they veered from the topic.

What is all this discussion about lawsuits between Steve D and Rich Harris. For those of us who are unfamiliar please enlighten us. Thank you. Case citations??
Not for any case between Steve and Rich. Rich isn't on those matters. It is just mentioned in one of the pleadings that according to Steve, he did some kicking of Rich's shit in the past. We have no idea what cases they are referring to.

This will prompt some civil conversation.

100%
She should sue and claim it is a sincerely held religious belief.
Law firm did the right thing. As incredibly far as the line has moved for someone like her to say outrageous stuff, she still crossed the line. I mean, people can really talk some sh*t these days; but saying something like THAT?? In New York??
Even AOC is keeping it civilized!

Imagine billing a public entity paralegal work at 225 an hour with a straight face.
And she was originally charging 475, which was higher than his rate. How is a paralegal getting away with so blatantly practicing law?
Pardon my ignorance, but was this subject to any sort of bidding process wherein hourly rates would have to be disclosed up front?
Hey, you can't charge $650 for assembling a binder explaining all the freelancing Gilbert was doing without a high rate. Gotta get paid, and all that.
11:05,
According to the lawsuit for a Writ of Mandamus, the 4 newly elected anti-trans hardliners terminated the RFP process for a legal services contract and had decided beforehand to hire him.

Oof if those text message quotes are true, its not a good look.

Even better read!
Discovery will be fun!
I would have thought that Will Kemp would have better ways to spend his time than getting involved in this kind of pissing match.
Will Kemp likes to get paid. I have no doubt that Will has been and will ensure that he gets paid.
delish!

Paralegals at BHFS charge over 300
This is correct and I am waiting for a judge under Brunzell and Yeghziaran to call BHFS out and say "Uhhhhhh no."
That is absurd.
Whatever happened to free market capitalism?
