#FF (Follow Friday)

  • Law

Knowing that many lawyers are technophobic luddites, today’s post is to help you get caught up with the times. Although hashtags are coming soon to Facebook, the #FF is a Twitter-centric hashtag that means Follow Friday. It’s used on Twitter to designate a tweet listing people you should follow. I’m sure that makes sense to the 65 of you who are on Twitter, but how does that impact the rest of you and what is a hashtag and who cares? Let’s show you.

Although you have probably read it and not believed it, Twitter is an excellent networking tool. In fact, that is probably its strongest virtue–the ability for generally unrelated people to connect about certain topics or events. The way Twitter makes those connections possible is through hashtags or #s. By simply putting a # followed by a word, for example #NBAfinals, everyone who is looking for tweets on that topic can easily find them. The best part is that nowadays, you don’t even have to use a hashtag as you can search for words, but hashtags are still commonly used for their convenience. By way of another example, if you attend the State Bar of Nevada 2013 Annual Meeting at Lake Tahoe next month, you might see the #nvbar, encouraging users to use that in their tweets so that other attendees can easily find tweets relating to the meeting.

Another way Twitter is being used, especially among lawyers, is to get yourself out there talking about the things you know. Since Twitter limits you to 140 characters, you don’t have to say much and can even share links to other stories or articles that show that you are in the know when it comes to your field.
One of the biggest concerns people have about Twitter is not knowing how to get started, that’s easy enough.  Just go to Twitter and sign up. Then what? Start following people. It doesn’t cost anything to follow someone and you can always unfollow them at anytime. By following and observing you will start to get an idea about how Twitter really works.
We know that still won’t get all of you on board, so we have one more suggestion for those of you who want to see how it works before you take the next step. Twitter allows users to create lists, so that you can view a group of tweets from certain users all at once. Someone has already started to curate a list of Las Vegas area lawyers. We’ve copied and pasted the users who are on that list below.
For those of you who already on Twitter and who want to be followed or listed or have a suggestion of who the Las Vegas legal community should be following, please put your Twitter handle in the comments. Happy tweeting!
