Family Court Dept. J – Judicial Primary Primer

  • Law

Family Court Department J features a race involving a sitting judge and two challengers. The candidates are:  Rena G. Hughes; Romeo R. Perez; and, Judge Kenneth E. Pollock.

Is it time to say out with the old and in with the new? Will Judge Pollock even make it past the primary? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Remember, the poll feature isn’t scientific and insightful comments about the merits of one judge over another will help others decide who to vote for in the primary.

Who should the people vote for in Family Court Department J?

ughh. Who keeps voting for Pollock? The guy is not a family lawyer, and his rulings are horrible. I hate going into his courtroom and try to bump him everytime.

If the other candidates made decisions that were unfavorable to you would you feel the same way about them? Is being considered a good Judge based on understanding, interpreting and making rulings that are consistent with the law or on making rulings that appease one party and not the other?

My God, I love the little grin when he makes an especially poor decision. Like the look on a chubby little toddler's face when he makes a doody in his diaper.

I agree, He screwed up our ruling, handing my step daughter over to a neglectful mother who had been out of the child's life for a year. Thank God, the child cried to come home within 6 months, and the mother couldn't handle being a mom, thus; allowing her to return without a fight. It is sad, he may have the best record of not being overturned, but I would be interested to see how many children have suffered at his hand!

I agree 100%. Pollock was not a family lawyer before taking the bench, and lest anyone should forget, he ran for a District Court seat while on the Family Court bench. His rulings also evidence a serious disconnect with family lawyers and litigants. He just doesn't get it. Either Rena Hughes or Romeo Perez would be better than Pollock. They at least have an even temperament and an interest in family law. I am leaning toward Rena Hughes because she is a family law specialist and has over 20 years experience in family law. She has also been very reasonable when I had cases against her. Romeo is also a good choice, but his experience seems to be limited to abuse/neglect cases.

Pollock is a joke as a family court judge. Even after a number of years on the bench he still cannot understand the arguments being made in complex cases and gets it wrong more than he gets it right. Either candidate is better than Pollock but my vote goes to Rena Hughes who has the experience and enough of an understanding of family law to get it right the first time. Romeo Perez is a likeable guy but he doesn't handle divorce, custody, paternity, etc. on a regular basis.

Too bad that the overwhelming majority of family court litigants cannot afford to appeal a terrible decision by a terrible judge. Couple that with the not very easily satisfied "abuse of discretion" standard that must be met to overturn a poor family court decision and I would be surprised if any family court judge does not have a "fairly good" appellate record.

So your saying he is wrong but isn't abusing his discretion, thus the decisions are within the ball park, you just don't like them.

Agreed, he is horrible! Thank God we saved our daughter after his ruling! Our daughter cried to be returned, her neglectful mother proved to be exactly what we tried telling and even proved! The child's teachers and principle both testified her father was the better parent. Again, thank God she is back with us, the mother gave up after 6 months, like we said she would!

In the RJ's Judicial Performance Evaluation, only 40% of the respondents say Pollock should be retained. I was not impressed with him as a practitioner and even less impressed with him as a judge. He is a nice guy and is heart is in the right place, but I think he lacks that judicial demeanor which is needed in a family court. I know that I would not want him deciding my divorce case.

In my experience, Pollock seems to be overwhelmed as a judge in Family Court. He is often looking for outside help to make difficult decisions. He takes forever to make an actual decision, and will reset hearings to delay doing so.

Seriously, I have been practicing family law in Nevada over 30 years, and I have no confidence in the incumbent. I welcome a change in this department. Mr. Perez is a likeable fellow, but I have had no cases with him. It is my understanding he practices bankruptcy, personal injury, criminal, and abuse/neglect law. I have had cases with Ms. Hughes and found her to be easy to deal with, reasonble in negotiating settlements, and fair-minded. Her specialization in family law is also a plus.

Rena Hughes would make a terrific family court judge. She has been practicing family law for many years, and truly understands the divorce process. Ms. Hughes also has a great disposition, and thanks to her experience as a mediator, she has the perfect combination of patience and strength to allow her to control a courtroom while still enabling both sides to adequately present their cases. I can only hope that the voters in this race are well-educated and can recognize that Ms. Hughes is the best candidate.

Judge Pollock has frustrated many attorneys and ruffled feathers. He clearly believes that the law, rules and procedures should be followed and has received a lot of push back from the attorneys that would not want to be bothered.

Not a go along to get along type of judge.

There is the big tent at the circus and a court of law. Judge Pollock knows the difference and runs his courtroom like a real court of law, unlike some of the family law attorneys would rather be circus performers.

No Pollock vote here. I cannot vote for an individually who, very publically at a recent bench bar meeting, stated that he will not reduce a lien to a judgment. Says the law does not support a judgment. As one attorney at the bench bar stated, Judge Pollock is willing to overlook 40 years of stare decisis. Ken, you might be a nice guy, but run at the RJC, we believe that's what you really want.

Judge Pollock has very few if any problems with the actual litigants in his courtroom, He runs a tight ship and expects everyone to follow the rules. Some Attorneys that do not get their way because they have their way in other courtrooms and got two shills to run against him. When is the public wake up and see what is going on.

My pick is Rena Hughes. I have been practicing family law for many years, and I have had the pleasure of working with Rena on the other side of a case more than once. Rena has integrity. She is a serious litigator who knows family law. Rena is prepared, and Rena definitely knows what she is doing in Family Court. Rena is also reasonable, cooperative, and respectful. Department J needs Rena Hughes. Rena will make a great judge.

For far too long Las Vegas Family Court has been run as a circus with favoritism shown to the lawyers who donate the most money. I think it is absurd to bash a sitting judge because of his "running a tight ship". God forbid an elected official do the job he was elected to do. I support the Honorable Judge Kenneth Pollock for his doing what he was sent there to do..

To the best of my knowledge Judge Kenneth Pollock does not allow some attorneys to abuse the legal system by taking advantage of their clients financially and because this may threaten the way that some people earn a living, I understand why some attorneys may dislike Judge Pollock's decisions. Good for Judge Pollock for looking out for the litigants who appear in front of him.

Judge Kenneth Pollock definitely has more 'Family' experience then both candidates and is more well-rounded and diverse in other areas of the law that can compliment him as a Family Judge as evidenced by him handling the biggest and highest profile divorce in NV history.

According to recently filed reports, the judge has tremendous personal resources at his disposal. His opponents, who are far less funded, and far less well-known, were already at a serious disadvantage, and their task has now become even more insurmountable. The judge just lent another $150,000. of his own to finance further campaign efforts. On the dramatically opposing end of the spectrum, his opponents appear to be really struggling to raise sufficient funds to remain even remotely competitive, according to their filed reports. What this all indicates is that the handful of domestic lawyers who think the judge should be replaced are doing very little to financially support either of his opponents. So, all this talk which has been going on for some time about how bad the judge is and how he needs to be replaced, amounts to nothing more than a hill of beans. Very few members of the voting electorate will be aware of his survey ratings or what family lawyers think of him. They will only know that the name, which will continue to be reinforced based on his significant financial commitment, is much more familiar to them than the names of either of his opponents. I am not arguing the merits of the arguments concerning his performance on the bench. I am only suggesting that we remove the dialogue from La La Land, recognize that this is the real world, and that family attorneys who dislike Pollock will represent a very, very microscopic fraction of the people who vote in the election. Therefore, whether or not he should win, the obvious result is that he will win–and comfortably so. So if his opponents wish to throw good money after bad it is up to them.

I'm not so sure about that. If his opponents are able to raise enough to mount a serious challenge, I assume he will need to spend at least some of the money to ward off their progress–unless, of course, he is successful in raising enough money from outside sources that it is not necessary for him to dip into his own reserves. He s one of the few judges who has a proven track record of spending large amounts of his own funds, such as when he won the Family Court seat, and when he subsequently ran for RJC. So, I wouldn't' be surprised if he spends generously. We will know in time.

One of many credits that Judge Kenneth Pollock has is handling the largest and highest profile divorce case in NV history, the Wynns, and both sides including attorneys were happy with his decision. Are there any achievements that Judge Kenneth Pollock's opponents have that distinguish them? I have not seen anything on their websites or marketing collateral or their interviews. Please share if you know of anything significant that they have done as attorneys. Thanks.

Yeah, you're an idiot. Freedom of speech is not what we're concerned about. See, most of us are lawyers or proto-lawyers, and we know that violations of freedom of speech require state action. Generally speaking, the government doesn't care about blog postings. But colleagues, employers (present and future), and individual judges might, and while the individual judges will never come out and say they are affected by something a particular lawyer appearing in front of them might have said (because while some of the are stupid, I don't think any of them are THAT stupid), I'd rather not take that chance.

I manage campaigns and do public relations for several clients. However that does not negate the fact that no one has answered my question regarding one significant act of family law experience that either opponent has who is facing Judge Kenneth Pollock. Furthermore all my contact information is public. Phone: (702) 902-2844 / Email: andre@emgnv.com / Address: 10080 W. Alta Dr. STE. 115 Las Vegas 89145. ……. Two questions still remain ….. (1) Name one significant family case that either opponent of Judge Kenneth Pollock has handled and state how it qualifies them and (2) Who are you? POST USING YOUR NAME and not a nickname.

We are in a primary, folks. The votes of a couple hundred family law attorneys who don't like a candidate could make a difference in a close rate. But I think Pollock will win though. Pollock does not have any organized groups of voters or websites against him. Doesn't his experience as a Family Court Judge count as experience for the last 6 years? By the way, I had a relative that appeared before him with counsel and they were pleased with his demeanor and professionalism.
