The ethics panel delay is annoying. It seems like all the oversight mechanisms in this state take WAAAAYYYY too long. What's the point of even conducting a review after the election? The same can be said for the commission on judicial discipline. What's the point of chastising a judge years later? My client's would kinda like the matter to be dealt with BEFORE said judge has the opportunity to screw up their case. Oversight on these issues should move faster.
Ethics boards and commissions have no teeth in Nevada. The only elected official who could lose their positions from said board's ruling is a judge. The others just get a slap on the wrist.
Love me Paul Dehyle.
Hugh Jackson of the Current reads like an old man screaming from his porch.
Hugh's politics are different than mine, but I like the guy. He's very intelligent. That said, he undermines his own message with the cynical snark and sarcasm that he tries to weave into the Current newsletters. That tone comes off as both defeatist and unprofessional. Which again, is really too bad because the substance of what Hugh has to say is almost always thoughtful and well reasoned.
Fascinating ruling from the Supremes yesterday (Case 83636). Let me lead off with that I generally like Judge Allf and think that she gets it right more than wrong. With that said, in this case she set an emergency motion the same day that the motion was filed. Counsel for Defendant (Robert Kern) filed a brief opposition on the merits and said that due to preexisting commitments he was unavailable for a hearing on the same day. Allf had her staff try to get Kern on the telephone for a hearing and could not reach him when Kern did not attend. The Court continued the hearing but sanctioned Kern for not attending a hearing set on the same day as filing and said that his failure to appear was "unexcused, inappropriate, and demeaned the Court." Supremes granted writ relief and said that Allf was manifestly unreasonable.
Yeah…don't know the case or parties involved, but that is unreasonable. Contrary to popular belief, we are people and have lives. Missing a hearing set for same day filing is not shocking or unreasonable.
Enjoyed the USDC conference yesterday including where a transgender speaker commanded the audience to respect all genders by openly insulting anyone foolish enough to believe in God. Half expected Will Smith to walk onstage next the room was so awkward.
I'd have walked the EFF out.
Except @ 8:58, that's not actually what the speaker said. I do not disagree that the speaker went off topic (of the law) to discuss her issues with religion and that some were offended. But no need to embellish what was said to make your point that you thought it was awkward or inappropriate.
Embellish hmm, the speaker said heaven and hell are "made up" while arguing it is scientific fact that there's multiple genders. If you have a different and/or less offensive recollection of what was said please provide it, I was there live and as evidenced by the audience reaction, zero embellishment is needed to establish the extreme offensiveness of what the speaker said.
You may disagree with the speaker's comments that some babies are born with indefinite genetalia, that hell does not exist in Judaism, or that the concept was invented 500 years after Christ, but that disagreement does not justify heckling an invited speaker at a federal district court conference. I have seen lots of speakers refer to religious concepts not held by all, but never before have I witnessed a speaker at a professional conference berated for expressing such views.
I agree, the conference was excellent, especially the advice from the FBI agent to buy American when choosing a dark web drug dealer. Also agree a less combative tone would have helped the speaker you mentioned. No one's going to easily abandon a lifetime of deeply held beliefs, especially when they feel they're being personally attacked.
