Feel like ruining your future career prospects in the pursuit of quasi-legal political fights? Are you unable to form basic sentences? Do all of your legal research through AI? The US Attorneys office in the District of Nevada is hiring!

Let’s not pretend that the US Attorneys Office has not harbored some of the worst abusers of power for a long time. Any office that could allow Steve Myrhe to be caught engaged in rampant prosecutorial misconduct and escape without a scratch tells you that while the political and anti-intellectual bent to the office is new, issues there are not.

Got my email from the State Bar of Nevada regarding BoG Elections. First, good on Draskovich, Leventhal and Westbrook for running as non-SBN climbers. Outsiders to bring a fresh perspective.

But vote out Andrew Craner. Nice guy who has not done any of the things to reform the SBN that he promised. I like you Andrew, but you have let us all down as a Governor.

Wondering. Does the BOG matter? The SBN staff seem to control the direction of the Bar and the annual vacation spot.

Andrew Craner was the one and only reform candidate. The rest are just business as usual. We need a reform slate to put an end to the none sense at the state bar.

Andrew ran on reform. As someone who follows/tracks the BoG, he has championed no reforms and seems to enjoy being accepted by the powers that be within the SBN and BoG. Running on reform and actually pushing reform are very different things.

Maybe I’m outside the legal know, but what are we reforming? What does the board of governors do?

I think there are two principal complaints on here:

1) The BoG always choose expensive, out of state destinations for the annual conference. This is because — the theory goes — they want a free trip to somewhere like Hawaii instead of slumming it in Winnemuca. People say that this is a waste of money and makes it hard for local attorneys to afford to go. This theoy sounds plausible but I don’t know enough to say.

2) Bar counsel targets solos and lets misconduct run wild at the bigger firms. I don’t buy this one at all. Solos by definition lack the institutional controls to prevent things like mistakes with client-trust accounts. Also, all the batshit stuff I’ve seen in this state has been done by solos or very small firms, never by big firms. And solos’ clients are more likely to make bar complaints than, like, MGM, which will just threaten you with a malpractice suit and get its money back instead. I’m not saying the big firms can never violate the rules, but it would be bizarre if they had a proportional number of bar investigations.

3. We were promised much more transparency and bar outreach. Your very question “what are we reforming? What does the board of governors do?” is reflective of the very problem Craner said he would tackle and yet nothing has changed. Very good at getting his picture taken in the bar headquarters but not really much else.

I am voting for Andrew Craner and Terry Coffing. Maybe Joel Henriod. How is Draskovich going to attend meetings and put in the time for bar business? He is a very busy prominent criminal defense attorney. David Westbrook is Deborah Westbrook’s husband and a career Deputy Public Defender.

Are public defenders not members of the bar?

How do you breathe and type at the same time? Bob can make his own decisions and I believe he would be an excellent BOG member.

Joel would do a great job. I didn’t know he was running but he is a lawyer’s lawyer.

Agree on Joel. I will vote for him. I know that Terry Coffing and Andrew Craner are doing a good job. They don’t need to be replaced. Criminal law practice is such a rabbit hole unique kind of practice. The majority of practicing attorneys are civil. Not sure if any of the attorneys running-
Draskovich, Westbrook and Leventhal have done any bar service. I like them and know them. I practice criminal and civil. Andrew is one of the few Board of Governors who has looked after the solos. Although Terry comes from a big firm background he is aware of the challenges that solos face. We need him and Andrew on the Board. Toss up on the others. Joel Henriod has been active with the Clark County Bar and has taught CLE classes. He is a class act. Andrew has tried to reign in bar spending and so has Terry.

Honest question- “Andrew is one of the few Board of Governors who has looked after the solos”. How? What? As a solo, we are more under attack with less protections and less services than ever.

One person can not change the culture at the Board of Governors. But he has tried. I know this because I am involved with committees and activities. What changes would folks like to see at the State Bar?

So above it was that he has made huge changes. Now it is that is ineffective and cannot make changes. I am also involved with SBN committees and activities and also follow BoG matters closely. Andrew has made no changes and has been a voice for the status quo. To Terry Coffing’s credit, he has been a credible voice.

Shouldn’t the Board of Governors be kind of a the “government is best which governs least” kind of thing? I don’t expect anything from them, don’t care about the meetings, and intend on abiding by my oath.

All of the discussion regarding Topic #1 of the day getting thwacked? Not my blog but sure seemed like a civil discussion about an issue hot within the legal community.
