The Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline meets today the consequences for Judge Steven Jones after special prosecutors provided clear and convincing evidence on 8 of 12 charges against him. [RJ]
Remember Ross Smillie? The judicial candidate who had filed to run against Judge Jessie Walsh and then switched to face Judge Michael Villani? Well, he may regret that move because Judge Villani has decided to challenge his viability as a candidate on the basis that Smillie does not meet the 10 year requirement of NRS 3.060. According to the challenge, Smillie was admitted in Nevada in 1987 and went on inactive status immediately until 2009 and didn’t practice here or anywhere else during that time. Since the article has no comment from Smillie, we’ll file this one as developing… but what do you think? [RJ]
The CityCenter case sees the possibility of settlement; the April trial date is not happening; and the five-year rule may be coming into play soon. [RJ]
One local pundit’s lengthy take on the Governor and Attorney General’s tactics in dealing with gay marriage in Nevada. [Ralston Reports]
The State Bar of Nevada has established a “Civility Task Force.” Chairman of the task force, judicial candidate Richard Scotti says the task force “will first determine if there is a problem…” LOL. Good one. [RJ]
If Jones isn't removed from the bench, the question I ask is: How badly does a Nevada judge need to screw up in order to lose his/her seat?
Jones should be grateful that for more than a year he's gotten to sit on his rump and collect a generous salary and benefits package from the taxpayers. I mean, how much longer does he expect the gravy train to keep rolling?
Come on, Steve, have some respect for yourself and slip into obscurity for goodness sake.

Jones now withdrawing from seeking re-election. The timeline on this whole matter just stinks…
Fear not folks, he'll be back. Since this is a betting town, I'll give you odds that he will do something to redeem himself and come back as a Senior Judge. It's been done before. Brilliant. But, he is after all, he is brilliant.
The sad part of this tale of woe is all that Steve needed to do was to tell Lisa you cannot appear in front of me. What is so darn difficult about that? "Ms. Willardson and I are friends. I do not think it's appropriate that she appears in front of me." 19 words and he would not be toast. 19 words and he would not have a $300,00-400,000 legal bill to JJJ (I'm speculating on that). 19 words there would not be a feeding frenzy in Department C.
12:31pm here. Honestly that is what baffles me about this whole relationship thing. Why not simply put it on the record and not have an issue and go forward. I can't believe that in this day in age (especially with social media, cameras on phones, the "water cooler talk", etc.) Jones thought the relationship wouldn't come out. Why even allow for an issue to develop makes no sense.
1:36 – The simple answer is that Jones believes he can do whatever he wants to do, without consequences – and but for David Roger, he might be right. Jones is just the latest in the line of Vegas guys who believed they were too powerful to ever get caught doing stupid stuff. That line includes guys like Dario Herrera, Mike McDonald, Lance Malone, John Ensign, and many many who came before them.
Mike McDonald … i forgot about that turd. I did insurance defense against him years ago for a trip and fall in a movie theater. he is everything that is wrong with this town … cop turned councilman, pushing through outrageous city contracts . Where is he nowadays?
Does anyone know whether the investment fraud charges have any merit? That little item seems to have been lost in all the commotion surrounding the Willardson affair.

Wow. Just wow.

As much as it pains me to admit it… he is the chairman of the Nevada GOP.
LOL! Of course he is!

Legally, can he still withdraw? I thought the candidates had only a brief time to do that.
Judicial candidates have until 1/31 to withdraw.
